The banana question; each stock may produce a cluster of bananas once but the new shoots keep coming. A plant as a whole is capable of producing for several years. Once harvested fruit, chop that stalk down to ground level, it won't produce again. chop it up and use as mulch.

Put more fish in the water there. They eat the mosquito larva. Also, a little bi of vegetable oil on the water, would stop the mosquitoes from feeding the larva. They can't feed through the oil film. That is what the mosquito is doing when it bites you, getting food for the larva. And only the female mosquito bites.

100x better than a Manila slum! My wife's home growing up was a Nipa Hut(think Gilligan's Island). Today, her family lives mostly in hollow block houses, with tin roofs, and tile covered, slab floors! How sad her sister will go to the Middle East! Many OFW's are abused in various ways in Middle Eastern countries, including sexual assaults, long work days without rest days, and no day off! You'd be surprised at just how affordable a hollow block house is to build, btw! Many have half walls of block, and woven upper walls, especially where there's shade...

I remember my ex's family in Mindanao were in a legal battle with their landlord but the details are bit sketchy, either the landowner wanted his land back, the family fell into rent arrears or maybe a combination of both. They had rented the land for 40 years or so building their own house & business but the local economy tanked when the paper mill closed. The court system being what it is in Phils, very slow, the landlord ended up paying them to leave.

Most Filipinos live in places like that. I have also lived like that for the past 2 years and half. Visa renewal cost, extra Medical care since I am a Norwegian who can not cope so well without air con, without bed, without refrigerator, cost for our baby boy etc demand a much higher cost for a foreigner like myself. The reason why I suffer like that, is due to the Norwegian Government stealing most of my money to give to my ex wife in Norway. So it is possible to survive on a very low budget here. But the Health issues are very serious in that kind of places. Most of those Filipino people live in a house of their own, or of the family, and do not necessarily pay expensive rent etc. So if you are a local, you might survive on 6K per month given that you have some back up help from family. Poor families also receive some cash for their kids, so it is not as grim as one think. Many Filipinos from the province also have some land, some coconut trees and other kinds of income, but they will not tell you about that! Being a foreigner will always require a much higher budget, obviously. I spend almost 6K per month in average only for Visa related costs...
