@jtylermcclendon
@jtylermcclendon 8 месяцев назад
Cool test. The penetration question is much more complicated and 60 vs 70 will vary a lot with arrow weight, diameter, spine, and FOC. The thing that will never change is that you will always get more penetration and less drop with 70 lbs over 60 and the same arrow properly spined. My thought is to pull as much as you can while getting adequate practice.
@benjaminsharp5714
@benjaminsharp5714 7 месяцев назад
Agree. Also a 70 lbs. Bow will shoot a heavier arrow much flatter then a 60 lbs. that will give you much more penetration.

Two reasons I dropped to 60. 1 got old😂 2 and most important after sitting in a tree stand for hours in zero or colder weather conditions I found it very difficult if not all most impossible to draw my bow back if I had to shoot from a sitting position and that was completely unacceptable, sometimes they get the drop on you and have to shoot from a sitting position.

The legal poundage for my state is 30lbs. Consistency is key with archery and shot placement. A shoot a 60 lb and most deer I come any where from 10 to 20 feet from my tree stand. A good shot to the longs and or heart will drop any deer. Awesome video.

thanks kendall for doing that work. i'm getting old and want to drop my bow weight down to make it comfortable. not to worried about penetration on a deer but that drop is significant at 40 yd mark. i always hunted with one pin up to 40 yds but if i bring the weight down i'll set up a second pin for the stretched shots.

45lbs is all you need you can ask many pro archers that pulling that amount of weight will absolutely ruin your shoulders no matter who you are.. I’ve killed every whitetail 45 lbs I let them get within 35 yards never shoot a deer with its head down or a eye that you can see means he can see you, if deer’s looking away they will never jump or duck a lot of deer are lost due to that

What does this mean
@trevor4791
@trevor4791 2 года назад
@@lethallobato2631 A dry fire with a modern compound bow can cause the bow limbs snap. What he’s using to test the draw weight is just a luggage scale which are known to fail which would cause a dry fire.

Man I used to be the same way, doing all that testing and everything to find the maximum power bow for hunting and all that when I was a teen. Then I saw an old timer take down a monster buck with a 30 lb draw weight. Shoot what you're comfortable with. Deer don't need much killing. Ive been out of the archery since I was a teen (outgrew my bow, can't afford replacement) but I just recently inherited my dad's old bows and I plan to get back into it and hope to be bagging some deer next fall when I get myself back up to a level I consider hunting good.

Great video. FYI I tore a rotator cuff in my right shoulder in August. Perfect timing huh? I shoot 65 lbs and couldn't handle it. I had to go back to 50 lbs to be able to draw the bow. 440 gr arrow with a rage 2 inch. Shot the deer in the heart. No problem with penetration. Went 15 yards, stopped and fell over. I will say it was like lobing it out there. When I amm healed up I will go back to 65lbs but if need be lower weights will do the job. Accuracey and a sharp broadhead are always the key.

I've bow hunted my entire life, when I was younger i shot 70 lbs. As I got older I reduced the weight for one reason. So i will tell you when 60 vs 70 lbs matters, it matters when the hunt isn't going as planned and the weather turned sour and you have been sitting in a tree stand for hours with wind and rain, and just as the sun is setting that monster deer you have been after finally walks into view broadside but you struggle to draw a 70 lb bow cause you are shivering from being so cold. Performance wise, there is no discernible difference.
