Never in history, until now, have we been able to hear from so many people around the world who have been brought back from clinical death. Modern medical resuscitation and digital communication have revealed a goldmine of intriguing near-death experiences (NDEs) that show us the character of God and the beauty of Heaven. John Burke has spent the last three decades studying the commonalities of more than 1000 NDEs. John Burke is the author of Imagine the God of Heaven, Imagine Heaven, No Perfect People Allowed, Soul Revolution, and Unshockable Love. He and his wife, Kathy are founders of Gateway Church in Austin, Texas, John is also the president of Gateway Leadership Initiative (GLI), a nonprofit organization. As an international speaker, John has addressed hundreds of thousands of people in thirty countries on topics of leadership and spiritual growth. He and his family live in Austin, Texas.

Great guest. It's delightful to see someone come to the truth through an open mind. A modicum of skepticism is necessary in any rigorous research. Truth can withstand skepticism, but does not reward uncritical skepticism, which is just an excuse for effortless and convenient doubt.

Steve I know that you have seen the comments from people that quote scripture and then follow up with a cold statement about our destiny. There is no warmth, no love. What those people don't realize is that they aren't encouraging people to want to learn more. Rather they are turning people off. I realize there is no engaging with that person so I just thank them for their comment. What I love about John is that he makes us want to learn more.

@@Beyond_with_Heather_Tesch Spirituality by rote is not true spirituality regardless of the words spoken. Spirituality is a matter of the heart which naturally spreads to influence every aspect of our lives. While it is a learning process and we don't begin at the end but at the beginning, the willingness to learn and open ourselves to new ideas is a fundamental and necessary component of a true spiritual life. A close-minded approach to spirituality is an attempt to stay in one place and believe we have nothing further to learn. In the final analysis it's a form of ego-assertion. The contrast between that approach and the honest open-mindedness of John is clear.

I think he makes such a great point in saying that all NDE's are just a glimpse in what actually happens when we die. Someone once explained that an NDE is like arriving at an airport. Some of us arrive at different gates and have a different view of the city, but it's not the same as leaving the airport and actually experiencing the city and living there.

I feel a kinship with John, coming from an agnostic and scientific background, and then to an unexpected faith. I learned about the NDE experiences after becoming a Baha'i. I was fascinated by how the NDE experiences fit beautifully with the Baha'i understanding of life beyond the veil of "death". John's understanding of hell also fits with the Baha'i view of heaven being nearness to God, and hell being separation from God. It's also interesting that most, if not all, NDE's don't encourage people to join a particular religion when they return. The emphasis is on treating one another with love, the same as Jesus or other Founders of the great world religions have told us. Religions have all deteriorated over time when their leaders began focusing on, and arguing about, what their "true" beliefs are, or how to practice the faith. To love one another becomes secondary. NDE experiences appear to give us the agency to investigate and choose our religion, if any.

Thank you @harlanlang6556 you said this so well. I think that some people are so compelled to convince people to believe what they believe that they forget the LOVE part. Best guest so far, to me. It is so intriguing the variety of stories. Like this guest said, what they see is based upon their world view or spirituality. I know someone who had one of these NDEs. He said, he heard someone running up to him, he turned and it was Jesus. It makes me break up at that possibility that Jesus would do that. As the Bible says, Jesus would have come and died for just one of us. Hard to conceive of being that type of special.

Great interview Heather and John. So my question I have in your research did you find that NDE’s felt that they were on the same playing level in Heaven/afterlife or was there a hierarchy maybe based on enlightenment? Secondly were they able to experience with others from all of eternity or limited to their life experience on Earth? Thanks

I can't speak for John and I don't have the answers but I can share my thoughts having listened to so many NDEs. There does seem to be various levels of complexity in the afterlife. In fact my upcoming guest Eben Alexander talks somewhat about this. For your second question, since there is no time in Heaven I assume we can intermingle with the soul of anyone from anytime. I guess we will find out someday. Make sure to come say hello to me. 😉

I've often wondered how the consensus data looks to a researcher. I hope in the next interview, or perhaps in a follow up, some sort of data can be put alongside. This could be either in a google doc or a downloadable pdf that shows some percentages of shared experiences. If possible perhaps it could include the major differences between experiences that seem to overshadow one another. How many NDE experiencers had experiences that conformed to their beliefs vs experiences that completely contrasted their beliefs etc.

I've read hundreds of NDE's and my feeling is that most experiencers were surprised, pleasantly, by what they experienced. There's not a lot of information in the Bible or other Holy Books about what to expect, except that many Christians are afraid they're going to hell because they feel that they haven't lived up to what God expected of them.

@Beyond_with_Heather_Tesch
@Beyond_with_Heather_Tesch 7 месяцев назад
Cheryl I find that they are confusing too because I’ve heard yes there is Hell, no there isn’t, it’s more of a place to rehabilitate, we create it ourselves, it’s temporary,and so on. So I plan to investigate this more in 2024. In the mean time I discuss it a bit with John Burke in his next two episodes and Eben Alexander (who is the next guest) gives his thoughts on Hell and has some interesting things to say about evil that made a lot of sense to me.
@stevew1487
@stevew1487 7 месяцев назад
I think part of the reason it's confusing is because we can't know what is just and what isn't. We look at some people and hope there's a heaven, and look at others and hope there's a hell. Did you ever read Howard Storm's story? He had a hellish NDE and at the nadir of that experience he understood that though it was tragic he was where he belonged, but he had a spark of faith that saved him and turned his experience around. His experience may have been brief (though he said it seemed like days), but what if that spark takes differing amounts of time to manifest? The beings he encountered in his experience didn't seem in a hurry to change, and Howard said he understood that they were once human beings who had the same characteristics while on Earth. I think if someone is attracted to that energy and all it represents, they'll practically create it themselves if it's not provided for them (maybe they do just that), but I don't think it's a punishment as much as a lesson. If free will has any value, the consequences of free will must have as broad of a spectrum as that implies. I read a book that said those in hell don't know there's a way out, but there is. In fact part of their 'punishment' if you will is that very ignorance, nevertheless, there is an end to their suffering.
@stevew1487
@stevew1487 7 месяцев назад
What specifically is illogical as you see it? I think it's worth exploring. I think if we break it down into specifics it might be easier to identify what might and might not be understandable.

@sampleowner6677 6 месяцев назад
@stevew1487 My experience is if I make a statement that I see God as the God of humanity, I get bombarded by Fundamentalist Christians telling me I need to accept Jesus or I'm headed to hell. They don't necessarily represent all of Christianity, but they get pretty intense. I was raised Catholic, and I was told as a kid in Sunday school that if I went to any other church, I was going to hell. So that is what gives me the impression that Christians claim exclusivity.
@stevew1487
@stevew1487 6 месяцев назад
@@sampleowner6677 Most of them certainly do, so I understand your impression. Still the tenets of any religion aren't dependent on any individual or collective interpretation per se, as those are filtered through various cultural and individual biases and no matter how widespread they may still be in error. That's why my opinion is one should consult the source material of any religion and then form your own opinion about it independent of any other interpretation, no matter how authoritative, insistent, or intolerant the alternative interpretation might be. I mean, it's YOUR soul!
@sampleowner6677
@sampleowner6677 6 месяцев назад
@stevew1487 I think most religions, in some form or fashion, claim exclusivity. Their holy books may not say it, but the people who claim the religion as their own see anyone who doesn't believe as they do as having been lead astray and are headed for some sort of eternal damnation. So, the Christians don't have a monopoly on exclusivity. I do believe there is a God, but I see him as the God of all humanity. I always ask the fundamentalists who badger me if they think all the Jews, Muslims and Hindus are going to hell and they will either not answer the question or answer yes. They need their asbestos suit. I'm more of a thiest. As I said, I believe in God, but the details are a bit fuzzy to me.

I have talked to, interviewed, researched and studied hundreds of NDE testimonies. Generally they do NOT coincide with the bible. Hi Jamie. Thank you so much for your input. I appreciate it. One thing I love about doing this podcast is hearing the various perspectives. Not all researchers and NDErs reach the same conclusions about the afterlife but I think it is great to hear them all as we put together our own picture of what to expect next. John is doing his research from a Christian perspective. I really enjoyed talking with him. He was very gracious as he shared his views and what I really liked about him is that he Is open minded about his beliefs and willing to look deeper into things that may not be in the bible. You'll find that in the next two episodes. He also is very nonjudgemental of others and is simply sharing the conclusions he has come to. We won't all agree on everything when it comes to our beliefs but we still can often learn from people who have views that are different than ours. Thanks so much for reaching out with your comment and also for taking time to watch my podcast. I appreciate you being here.

Obviously, you do not believe the Word of God, or the bible, which is opposed to your viewpoint of "hell". Jesus is the Creator of all things you have seen and not seen. Clearly, when reading the Gospels, hades and gehenna are mentioned by our Lord. Also, you might want to re-read the account of Lazarus and the rich man; this is not a parable, but an actual account. Colossians 1:16-20 King James Version 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. 19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; 20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
