The 12th instalment of the Railway Touring Company's Great Britain 9 day tour saw a clockwise approach heading down to Devon for the first couple of days before heading north to Scotland via Wales. PRLCT's LMS 6233 'Duchess of Sutherland' had the honours of hauling the first three days to Plymouth (day 1), Minehead (day 4) and Preston (day 3). I captured the first two days at Pangbourne, Thingley, Bedminster, Whiteball, Dainton and on the dock sidings at Plymouth on Day 1 and struggling to walking pace on Hemerdon, Exeter St David, Yatton, Berkley and Witham Friary.

Very well done filming Tom 👍😉 I certainly like the snece of Duchess of Sutherland struggling and the departure at Exeter st Davis. I hope Great Central & Nene Valley Railways will have the locomotive in the near future for a gala or something. I've got good new, I've buy a new Panasonic camcorder which can take a microphone and the camcorder in question is HC-V770.

5029 with assitance from 47784 was the best run I ever had over here. 47 was wide open from Mutley all the way to linespeed nearly then 1/3 way up the bank 5029 unleashed what could only be described as obsolute hell, never heard a roar like it since from any loco, only 6024 has come close.

I would say that whoever calculated the load added one coach too many. Reminds me of the story about the greedy lad who was promised all the land he could run around in 12 hours. Along the way, he saw a very nice extra bit and ran around that as well. At the finish line, he didn't - heart gave out in trying to make it before the deadline - which was well named. An extra 48 seats filled, but nearly did not make it at all. The emergency diesel should surely have been there for all the trip, not just some of the sections. To be assisted by another loco is no shame, though I believe that only the West Country loco "Yeovil" left the banker engine behind on Drumochter Summit - the banker could not keep up with her!

I guess even the most powerful steam engines can sometimes struggle on a formidably steep incline. At one point, Duchess of Sutherland slipped to a temporary stand. She valiantly got going again, still struggling wit determination. I'm sure Sam of Sam's Trains status would have been shocked had he been watching.

Great series of shots. Thank you for posting. I'm amazed at the amount of steam that was being wasted on the climb up Hemerdon bank. She was blowing off all the way up. I can understand that the fireman didn't want to run out of steam but there is a balance to be struck between too little and too much. Does 6233 have a mechanical stoker? I know some of the duchesses did (I think Duchess of Hamilton is one of them). If so I suppose there must be strong temptation to just keep on firing.

Plenty of power , not enough grip on wet rails. (& I have been in a failed train several times lately including Voyager & HST. & 150) I predict the new Hiachi IET will fail here at some point - with good traction - but not enough power! Funily enough I was talking to the crew at Plymouth asking how it performed on the banks & they said -Fine, no problem, she flew up. So I said, Well tomorrow you have Hemerdon that's a different matter, you are likely to get problems. Really? they said Oh we will look out for that then!

@@tgk300xx4 You are argumentative are'nt you? Yoy don't come from execeter do you? I travel on this railway 1 -3 times a week (for years) and there are failures on wet rails. The Hitachi's WILL fail. get over it. The run up at Hemerdon is 75mph, so that makes a big difference from E B. Still trains breast it slower than Dainton. I ask the staff and the drivers (often). I asked early last winter - which has the most cancellations/ failures - the sea wall or the banks - His reply was the banks (but they don't get reported). Do you know the difference detween a 800 and an 802 - especially made for this line?
@marktownend8065
@marktownend8065 5 лет назад
I think the five car 800s might be particularly vulnerable to slipping in the wet if they had an engine isolated, assuming they're allowed to operate over the banks in that state, and they'd certainly lose time. There was always a restriction on HSTs working west of Newton Abbot with one power car out. The signaller had to arrange a run at the bank with no adverse signals from Newton Abbot and any Totnes stop would be withdrawn.

No diesel banker. Put a Manor or a Hall on as a banker, seeing it was a former GWR mainline. The weather on this particular day looked a bit wet and maybe she had no sand,even though she had steam sanders working.

As if it's his fault that the tracks go uphill. What is he supposed to do, get out and tunnel through the hill and lay new track?
@Rosie6857
@Rosie6857 4 года назад
(Mick Boakes) Merely running a steam loco wears it out. Heavy thrusts, large revolving weights, boiler corrosion and all that. That's why they need regular overhauls. And if you're not going to run them why bother preserving them unless you get a kick out of mummified museum pieces? Not my cup of tea.

some very uninformed comments here . the Duchesses took 20 over Shap unassisted on a daily basis . I suspect she had some damp sand and couldn't get it on the rail

Shap is 1:75, this is 1:42 and it was a wet day.
@Rosie6857
@Rosie6857 2 года назад
That is an uninformed comment in itself. A routine heavy train over Shap consisted of 15 coaches max, never 20, and often a banker was provided, usually a 2-6-4T, not because the Duchess couldn't do it but to speed things up and not occupy the line for too long. The same applied to Beattock bank, which is much longer. Damp sand can't be the problem because these locos were provided with steam sanding.

Compare this wil the run from Clan Line in 2018 over the same hills. Not a sign of a slip, even though the Bulleid Pacifics were notorious for slipping - and looks like the run was done in misty weather so the rails would have been wet. Well said. I thought the driver handled the beast very well. After all, the regulator is not some pretty little plastic button but a long heavy handle, often stiff, that will need repeated opening and closing. The engine was being driven no harder than necessary to get the train up the bank, no doubt to avoid a slip. The fact that several occurred is in no way the driver's fault.

10 coaches is actually *less* than the number of coaches a Duchess could be expected to get up Hemerdon. Kings routinely took 11 and a Duchess has the same tractive effort, which is what it comes down to.
@mattseymour8637
@mattseymour8637 4 года назад
