you make about 14 percent of the weight of the motor total in copper. plus the scrap. many scrap yards buy them as they are or sell the motors . also when stripping them dont cut both ends of the copper leave one end with the loop to pull through. far easy than knocking through.

@Fektthis
@Fektthis 5 лет назад
hope he doesn't plan on a long retirement. look at the value of that block. at the time of this video it was 23 USD. It's actually less now as the price is lower than when this is made. It could go up again, it fluctuates a lot. However, end of the day, that's a couple grand in recycled metal sitting there. The brass above it is going to be worth less than the copper. He's smart for doing what he's doing but don't get twisted and think there's more than what there is

So, instead of cleaning it up, putting a set of bearings in it and giving it a paint job. And selling it for 10 bucks per horsepower, you made it into a copper bar. Good show
@chrismartin6578
@chrismartin6578 5 лет назад
I work in an electric motor repair shop and yes this is sort of accurate. The first step is to see if the winding is good. If it is then you could have easily replaced bearings and switches for a nice profit. Just guessing the hp on that one is around 20. Could easily be sold for $600.00 USD with far less work than making that ingot....... most likely it was trashed because the winding was bad. Its not cost efficient anymore to rewind electric motors..... so, nice work! Please next time though, test the continuity of the winding before you destroy another motor for $20 worth of copper :)
@bigstackD
@bigstackD 5 лет назад
Yeah I hear ya , this motor was destined for the scrap yard for low steel scrap price (it was thrown in the steel scrap bin by some lazy fitter ) but part of the agreement with the boss was to take it home and strip out all the copper and show him the Ingot 🤷🏻‍♂️. The motor may have possibly been ok but it had become obsolete on this site and honestly the things the bosses throw away at my work is bloody ridiculous 🤦🏻‍♂️. I’m allowed to go through the scrap bin every now and then but I don’t wana abuse the right or he might stop me.

Hey Brandon how are you ? the thing with this motor was I was only allowed to take it off site if I was to melt down the copper and bring it back in to show the boss otherwise I was told it was going to the scrapyard so I had really no choice plus I get to keep the copper so that’s a win-win for me. This site I work on throw out a lot of good stuff which is very disappointing but as it’s a big enough company they don’t care about making small profits they just turf it in the bin and move on , it’s very frustrating sometimes

Years ago I served in the US Navy aboard an aircraft carrier. It was an older conventional carrier built at the end of WW2. As an electrician I rotated through several of the shops aboard ship. I spent a few months in the Power Shop which maintained the electrical motors big and small around the ship. One guy in the shop spent all day every day tearing down failed motors for the carrier and it's support ships. He would torch out the winding for the rotors and stators and form new windings, dip them in varnish cook them and rebuild the motors. The power shop would melt down the old windings and pour copper ingots. When we came back from a cruise they would take the ingots to a local salvage yard and but a few kegs of beer for the end of cruise E Division party on the pier. When in home port the ship would shut down the steam turbo generators and run off shore power. So one of the machinist mates in the boiler rooms where the turbo generators are located decided to sell some copper too. He removed several of the bussbars from the back of the turbo control panel. Solid copper bard a few inches thick and right inches wide and six feet long. He may still be in levenworth. From then on we had to dump the scrap copper at sea. What a waste.

In America we call them tweakers, scum bags or...targets. Not like this guy though. Those I speak of steal high dollar items to destroy and sell for pennies. They work real hard too. Like a full time job. What a waste
