長曽祢虎徹が刻した「東叡山忍岡辺」ってどこ？！
脇差 銘 長曾祢興里作 住東叡山忍岡邊

前回、評価鑑定を依頼された長曽祢興里（虎徹）の脇差の銘に刻されていた、「住東叡山忍岡辺」の地名。虎徹は承応～明暦頃江戸に出府したと考えられ、以後は生涯江戸で作刀しておりました。虎徹の足跡は様々な書物に記され、明治以後も第一線の研究家の諸先生方によって詳細な研究がなされておりますが、虎徹が居住したこの「忍岡辺」が具体的にどこであったのかは、未だ決定打と言える説が出ておりません。
日本刀専門店銀座長州屋代表の深海が、４０年を超す鑑定歴で培った刀剣への知見と鑑識眼、そしてそれらに裏付けされた観察を以て、この長く結論が出されることのなかった「忍岡邊」の正体について考察してまいります。「大久保虎徹」で知られる大久保一翁、『長曽祢乕徹の研究』の杉原祥造、佐藤寒山、福永酔剣、『日本刀銘鑑』の石井昌国…、名だたる蒐集家、虎徹研究の第一人者とされる先生方の研究諸説を一つずつ採り上げ検証し、さらに上野という町が、江戸時代から現代に至るまでどのような変化を遂げているのかという視点も加えながら、考察し結論を導き出しました。
新刀の横綱と称される虎徹の研究としてのみならず、開幕から現代に至る四百余年間に大火、地震、戦争といった人災天災によって絶えず破壊と再生を繰り返した上野という土地の歴史という面からも興味深い内容となっております。

The Biggest Mystery of KOTETSU!!
Where is "Tōeizan Shinobugaoka-hen" inscribed by Nagasone Kotetsu?!

In the previous episode, we discussed the place name "Residing near Shinobugaoka of Tōeizan" inscribed on a wakizashi by Nagasone Okisato(Kotetsu) that was submitted for appraisal. It is believed that Kotetsu moved to Edo around the Jōō to Meireki era and continued to make swords in Edo for the rest of his life. While Kotetsu's footsteps have been recorded in various documents and studied in detail by leading researchers since the Meiji era, there is still no definitive theory about the exact location of "Shinobugaoka-atari" where Kotetsu resided.
Fukami, the representative of Ginza Chōshūya, a specialized Japanese sword shop, will examine this long-unsolved mystery of "Shinobugaoka-atari" using his expertise and observational skills cultivated through over 40 years of appraisal experience. We will review and verify the theories of renowned collectors and leading Kotetsu researchers one by one, including Ōkubo Ichiou known for "Ōkubo Kotetsu", Sugihara Shōzō of "Research on Nagasone Kotetsu", Satō Kanzan, Fukunaga Suiken, and Ishii Masakuni of "Japanese Sword Inscription Encyclopedia". Additionally, we will consider how the town of Ueno has changed from the Edo period to the present day, to draw a conclusion.
This content is not only interesting as a study of Kotetsu, who is called the Yokozuna of the Shintō period, but also from the perspective of the history of Ueno, a land that has repeatedly been destroyed and rebuilt over more than 400 years due to human-made and natural disasters such as great fires, earthquakes, and wars.
