Hey guys, roof maker here. The waterproof layer is worth it, even if it is plastic (I don't know if there is some natural material equivalent). First, in case of a broken or missing tile, because of hail or wind storm maybe, your roof won't leak as fast as if you didn't put that layer, giving you some time to fix it without damaging your insulation. Keep in mind that it is not a fully waterproof layer, so don't leave it exposed too long under water and UVs, it won't like it. Next, it helps also with condensation, keeping your insulation dry, no matter the temperature difference between inside and outside. Then, I don't know if there might be snow where you live in winter, but if it might, I've seen tile roofs without that layer completely full of snow under the tiles, catastrophic. Maybe some natural fiber layer might exist, then try it, but you definitely made a good choice by adding one in your build. You're doing awesome job, keep it like that!
@netby
@netby Год назад
Snow is extremely rare here ... and when it happens is like 1/2 inches snow during one week or so we have around 4 months of chilling temps( not freezing...) Nov,Dec, Jan, February with night temps and early morning around 32/28 ºF and during the day, with the sunrise ,temps go up to the 50/59 ºF....
@uribove
@uribove Год назад
My first thought would be natural rubber, but maybe that's not breathable enough and will result in condensation in winter? Also not sure if natural rubber is made in such long thin strips

A layer of loam/clay can work as a replacement for those membranes. Of course it's significantly heavier, and can be damaged by a severe leak.

Hey xdaerian, how about the counter battens? Arent the screws supposed to go in the rafters? Or could you just screw the battens in de corck insulation? Im asking cause im planning to insulate the roof with PIR insulation. Thanks on advance!

@xdaerian3945 Год назад
@@dirkzandberg2946 yeah, seams a bit strange for me to screw it in the insulation only, you should use long screws to get down to the rafters. I don't know the strength of corck, never used it, but it seems a bit soft to hold the wind force

It is worth having the waterproof layer. It would only cost more to repair the leaks and increas in CO2 emissions not to not to mention if a beam rots and collapses it could seriously injured someone Everywhere else there are alternatives but that one is worth not skipping.

If you plan to make the ruin air tight and expect negative temperatures in winter you should add a water diffusion barrier on the inside to prevent the humidity from insde to condensate in your insulation, which would rot eventually otherwise. Unfortunately that means more plastic, but longer lifetime.
@ChaosCamperCouple

I'm not sure if that is also necessary with cork as it is already a natural water barrier. Would be interesting to get a construction physician's idea on that.

I know, I know - I'm a whole year or more after the fact. But I just found you guys a couple weeks ago - & I went back and started at the very beginning to watch your whole development as it goes. This is my first comment because the cork is just SO COOL! I have worked in the building trades for nearly 3 decades and I'm enjoying watching you get better at things. I think your vapor barrier is justifiable in its application. The 'old school' alternative would have been Tar-paper. At least that's what we call it in the states. I'm not sure if they make tar paper out of sustainable stuff or not - pretty sure it's petroleum based, so still not the best. It does seem a bit less processed though and like it takes less 'tech' to produce. I don't know. The main thing is that you have ideals and you strive towards them with the best integrity you can manage with the knowledge, skills and resources you have at the time. You are doing GREAT.

In all your considerations of materials used, please think of the fire proof-ness or resistance to fire of all of them. This matters, same as ensuring vegetation and trees are kept away from permanent structures. Firebreaks are super important too as is a fire plan, ie staying and fighting with preparation or when and how to leave. Loving your project, all the best from me in Western Australia. 😊

The plastic in the waterproof layer's embedded carbon pales into insignificance compared to the steel fixings. Most building wraps have a recycled component as well. so think of it as extending the life span of the fixings and in that case if it doubles the life of those then it is carbon positive.

My thoughts on the waterproof barrier: The membrane needs to allow moisture out or the inside will rot. My house is somewhat old, the most recent addition was built about 50 years ago. That section was built with wood studs, plywood outside pressed board paneling inside, and fiberglass insulation. The plywood was covered with tar paper, then a cement shingle. Over the years, moisture collected inside the walls due to the tar paper. Now I have a mold and rot problem in the walls. On the other hand, only the bottom of my wall is rotting, so your roof may be just fine. Especially if the inside has a way to breathe and dissipate moisture.

@izoyt

definitely, if this is real waterproof, not vapour membrane., then wood will be exposed to surface condensation in insulation, which could not ventilate/dry out in big temperature shifts. this will make wood rot, specially thin/soft wood like that. and dby they way, cork as roof insulation is not the best pick from start, imo. if you need realy water proofing, reinstall waterproof with vapour membrane, add additional air layer, put plank/osb over and finish with waterproof membrane if really need it (and finalised with proper roof tiling).

Hi. In my opinion. the waterproof layer may not be need to keep water to reach the cork insulation. Water don´t penetrate cork. However in the cork tiles gapes may infiltrate and enter the house. It´s more safe using but not eco friendly. It´s a choice that have to be consider. I don´t now any eco friendly material that replace that waterproof membrane. Maybe palm leaves perhaps.... Cool roof design! Looks well designed as well :) there is an option to have another foil beneath the insulation to prevent condensation in the insulation (Vapor pressure will "pull" moisture through the construction towards the outside in winter). That might lead to moisture at the outside of the insulating layer. It's a common problem in a few constructions and it's not that bad as long as the construction dries fully during summer as well. Nevertheless I'd highly recommend using such a foil to get rid of that problem entirely. Key is to have more moisture diffuse out of the construction than into the construction over the year.
