In this video I test and review the 65mm f/1.4 SPEED MASTER lens by ZHONG YI Optics. This lens is the first 3rd party lens for the Hasselblad XCD system, and is now the fastest Hasselblad XCD mount compatible lens on the market.
I shot in Tokyo's Harajuku district as well as Yoyogi Park and tested the lens using the Hasselblad X2D 100C. It was great fun and I am super happy with the images we got.
A couple disclaimers. I was not paid for this review, only provided with a lens to test from ZHONG YI Optics. Also, the lens I received should be considered a pre-production model.

Thanks so much for the great video and excellent analysis of this lens. I don’t think it’s the first third party lens for XCD. TTArtisans has an XCD version of their 90mm f/1.25 lens which was originally made for Leica M mount.

Thanks for the video I appreciate it. The X2D doesn't have focus peaking, but the X1D mark 2 does but when you said F1.4 is soft and showed us to me thats the whole point you get a heavy F1.4. It's for the F1.4. So I'd rather save and get the Hasselblad 65mm which is incredible
@jasonhalaykophotography
@jasonhalaykophotography Год назад
Thanks for checking out the video! Much appreciated. So what I mean by "focus peaking" is the ability to double tap the back of the screen and get a 100% view of the image to check focus. Looks like I am using that wrong though, thanks for pointing that out. What you what I am doing be called I wonder? And ya, the lens is not for everyone. I myself always try to save up and get the best, but for the price I think it was pretty good in the end. Thanks again!

Have the same feeling - probably getting the XCD 65 in addition to the 80/1.9 that I own already. This lens looks tempting but I am not sure how the images will turn out in the 100MP sensor… at 1.4. Especially for moving objects with a thin DoF and electronic shutter. 😅 For the price definitely something!
@jasonhalaykophotography
@jasonhalaykophotography Год назад
@@mahdimanesh4221 for moving subjects I’m sure I would get nothing in focus with this lens at 1.4. More my lack of skill than anything else. If you have the money the Hasselblad lenses are for sure the way to go but this is an interesting option for the price. Thanks for checking out the video!

@@mahdimanesh4221 the main reason to get it is to shoot at F1.4 and its soft at F1.4 its sharp at F2.8 at that point get the 65mm XCD Keeping in mind its as heavy as the XCD 80mm f1.9 not worth it

It's me or the X2D does not have the color science that the X1D series and the H series had? did they cut the color calibration to cut costs? Also, the Hasselblad lens has a shutter, and that is important if the subject moves even a little as the rolling shutter of the sensor is massive.
@AlexDerrick_DP
@AlexDerrick_DP Месяц назад
When they increased the resolution they lost some of the color fidelity. There are some tradeoff when you increase resolution and this is one of them. Bigger pixels have better light gathering capabilities. Which is why Im sticking with my X1D2. Also not sure if this lens has a leaf shutter, but...........
@vvarumo
@vvarumo Год назад
Hi, did you use the X2Ds electronic shutter with this lens? It seems that there isn't any information about this - not on your video nor on zhong yi site. While it may be convenient that someone does a lens in the actual XCD mount I feel that it doesn't help much if they don't also build the leaf shutter inside the lens. So if it doesn't have the leaf shutter inside, you can't really shoot with it during the night time since you get awful banding with most artificial lights.

While difficult to determine from the POV you shot your video of you using the lens outside whether or not you used the integrated/reversible lens hood, I wonder if you would still have had the blue/red flare shooting backlit scenes? Were you, in fact, using the lens hood? I ask because I'm very much interested in purchasing this lens for my x1dii. Thanks. Hey there Jason. I know you don’t work for ZY, but could I impose upon you to reach out to your contact there to respond to an email I sent to them this past Wednesday about a very serious problem I’m having with the lens they sent. I’ve attempted to reach them through the web portal but, as before, they don’t respond. In my case, they will likely have to either replace the lens or whatever they do when it’s not built correctly. The whole front lens element has become loose to the point that I can use it for fear the element will fall out of the lens! So, while I loved the first few shots I made with it, it is now a paperweight!

The lens has terrible flare and lens reflections. I'm guessing they don't have very good lens coatings but in situations where you weren't getting flare the image didn't look too bad. That is, it wasn't bad for a cheap lens. The problem is that if this costs $800 that isn't cheap, it's only cheap compared to Hassy lenses. Unless I missed it you didn't say if this is a leaf shutter lens but I assume not which means you are shooting with the electronic shutter only. Considering this lens is all manual, still has vignetting, and doesn't (probably) have a leaf shutter, you would be far better off getting a far cheaper high quality manual lens designed for an older medium format system (or even some 35mm lenses) you can adapt to the Hassy.
@jasonhalaykophotography
@jasonhalaykophotography Год назад
This has no leaf shutter so only shooting on the electric shutter. And ya, I don’t find the lens flair myself, and it wasn’t too hard to keep it out of the shot when I didn’t want it, but agree that there might other options out there using adaptors and things like that. Thanks for checking out the video!

DISAPPOINTED WITH ZHONG YI: My fiancee ordered the lens for me on 19 March, while the lens was still listed as in stock; she also paid the extra $30 for express shipping . She immediately received a payment received notice, and after that... crickets!! She reached out to them a few days ago through their CONTACT US page and... wait for it... crickets!! I'm sure this is a legit company, but MAN what incredibly horrible communication (as in NONE). I'm only posting this here because our efforts to contact them directly have failed miserably.
