Today I went over our second cutting of hay with the tedder before raking and baling later in the day. The hay was rained on a few days earlier so some areas were too wet and had to be put off until the following day.

Christy did a great job! Wet ground is so hard to bale good hay on. Each time you drive over it you mash the hay back into the wet under the tires. I had some this weekend we had to rake and let set several hours to dry back out. Makes things tuff, plus it raises your ash content and dust level in the hay. But we just have to make the best out of what we are dealt when it comes to weather.

Thanks! It was definitely a tough year for second cutting. We finally had to take the chance and cut it with showers in the forecast or we probably wouldn’t have gotten it cut at all.

Good job Christy! Sorry about the hay getting rained on. We had issues with the ground being so wet and hay not drying this last time we baled. It is tough!!

It’s been a tough year for hay. We had the same problem after the rain some areas of our field were just too wet and muddy for the hay to dry well.

I went to a huge consignment auction a few weeks ago. They actually had a couple Tedder there. I have never seen them in Iowa before. If I hadn’t been watching your videos, I wouldn’t have even known what they were. Good job on the video Christy. Full watch and a 👍

Our summers here in CT are usually really humid so tedding the hay is the only way to get it to dry well. I don’t think they are really necessary in other areas of the country where it’s dryer.

@@HillsideAcres , we have very high humidity here in Iowa as well. June is usually our wettest month out of the year. This year, we went the entire month with less than 1/4 inch of rain. It was great weather to make hay. We are about to find out how much of an effect it had on the other crops. Soybeans are just starting to get harvested. No reports yet as to the yield.

It seems out your way is all hills. Any open land without houses on it is hard to find around here!

Our weather in CT tends to be really humid in the summer so the Tedder helps to dry the hay faster. I don’t think areas where the climate is dry have to use them.

@@HillsideAcres That makes sense. I know they really plan for the weather before they drop hay.

You've got a good second crop! How many acres to you bail? We used to have some quarter horses, a quarter pony, and an Appaloosa, so I remember all too well bailing hay. I do miss it sometimes - until I think back on the experiences. Of course, the equipment always needs some attention (bailer knots won't tie, broken pins, etc.). We've bailed a few rattlesnakes that survived. We've had vehicles get stuck picking up the wagons. And of course - several days of sneezing and itchy arms. :) Yep - I miss it. - Chad #purplecollarlife

We do about 18 acres today and baleing this cut was a long day and unfortunately didn’t get to video. Busted a lot of shear bolts because the hay was so thick. We filled two 53 foot trailers and a 40 foot shipping container as well as three hay wagons still full and even filled the 18’ car trailer lol
