@@HuxleysShaggyDog well, yes, quite a lot for their time, a Cummins with 14L of displacement made about 400hp, meanwhile a Detroit diesel 8v71 with only 9.3L of displacement made nearly the same power while missing nearly 5 Liters of displacement compared to the cummins.
@@maplemanztf you mean little torque there literally known for converting diesel into noise and torque there torque monsters there issue was being way to over engineered they were way ahead of there time they owned 77.1% of the diesel market at one point but they were to damn heavy I have a 4-53t in a 84 f150 the engine weighs like 1400 as a 3.5L 4 banger 406ft pounds of torque 175 horse well I garret swapped mine so probably more power now but you get the point
"Loud Memories" I love that. I started driving in 2011 and luckily my time hasn't been all plastic and fiberglass. I got to run some real rigs in the oilfield. My assigned truck was a 379 with a king of the hill cat and the back up was an old 70s Mack dump truck with a Spicer 4x4.
I was a boy growing up around a Detroit shop in the 80s. I remember the Tigator rigs coming in to get opened up more.. Is it really true they were hitting 600 to the ground on those 71s?
This is what made me get into trucking many years ago! I remember as a child back in the mid 60's, lying in bed at night listening to the big trucks heading out town, grabbing gears in the twin stick Detroits.
I saw this video when it was first posted I believe I was 13 or 14 I still come back an watch it now that I'm 18 I've been hunting for a truck to build with my pa and this trucks the one that inspired me to try and find an 8v71 or 92 a model that's a dam good lookin rig
Carbon Monoxide, and soot aint the best emissions either, there really isnt an engine with the best emissions other than avoiding them entirely woth electric, but i will say diesel handles fuel way better than gas
Ahhhhhh yes but carbon is plant food more carbon the greener it is.they removed all the carbon from a valley in Switzerland and now nothing grows there.
@@bigred1247 Could you give me your sources? I found an article about the carbon capturing plant that opened in Switzerland but nothing on the stunted plant growth
@@dracenut8915 they make an exhaust system now that you can literally breath out the tail pipe. They got one at my school. The exhaust is supposed to be cleaner than the air we’re breathing.
Now I know what engine I heard. Saw a vintage Semi go by and sounded exactly like this. Let me tell you, the video does no justice. Its sounds Multi-Dimensional in real life. Like I couldn't tell if it was a Helicopter above or something in the ground below me. I didn't know if it was in front or back or left or right. Its ridiculous. Btw in case you were wondering he was on the other side of the street passing by in the opposite direction while I was stopped.
@GT Classic Plastic the old 2 strokes they love the RPM that’s where the powers at. I gotta find me a V8 Detroit or V12. Maybe a 359 Peterbilt. I got all Kenworths my favorite brand then Peterbilt
@GT Classic Plastic yep. They are badass man. I gotta find one soon I got all CAT powered trucks at the moment. I purchased a cheap international paystar single axle dump truck not long ago with a 290 Cummins. I may see if I can Detroit swap that truck. Something to think about. The engine in it is nice. The trucks old and abused and rusty. That’s all. It’s got differential locks and AWD switches! Sweet old truck I love that truck. Gonna see about putting a plow on it too. It did have a plow before. I just got the truck.
@@somespeedbikefreak9244 They make a lot of noise and blow a lot of smoke. The main difference with 40,000 pounds is that the shifting noise goes away after a couple of shifts because it will top out at about 20 miles an hour. Worse with a full load.
I used to haul with a Ford LN9000 with 13 and 318 detroit. Let me tell you, pulling 65000# dump trailer full of Georgia red clay and the shifts would take what seemed like years. Slooowwwww. But she ran good and was fun empty.
I work those engines in Puerto Rico with 50,45 40,30 tons of cargo in the 80s and 90s and they are real good.in the bad Puertorrican roads these are real good machines.and their suund is music for all truckers.
Used to hate to stroker's back in the day. It was the BC Cummins or the HUGE 425 CAT. Now I miss having them around as they are / were a very reliable motor (plus the very sound of them !!)
That engine sure did sound good revving way up. The old saying used to be that to drive one of these properly, you had to slam your thumb in one of the doors. LOL
@@shawnbirt4161 oh ya. i’m all about the earth and conserving it but even a few thousand detroits on the road wouldnt pollute a quarter as much as the military does…daily.
