Love the way you sketch the shapes on the paper and don't worry about them being perfect. You paint in some darks for shadows and don't worry about them being in the lines or even covering an entire window ... and it looks most excellent! An artist after my own heart.

I've been exploring a limited palette recently myself. I picked up a copy of Hazel Soan's book called "Art of the limited palette" and I've learned quite a few things from it. One thing that surprised me was that you mix the darkest blacks from transparent colors because opaque colors don't go dark enough. I started painting with acrylics a long time ago and stopped when my kids came along. I started painting again last year, but with watercolors instead, now that my kids are 18+, and I've realized after reading Hazel's book that I've not actually put any thought into color mixing at all. I've just relied on color memory from long ago, this color and this color gives me this color and off I go. It's definitely something I want to explore more.

What I love about your artwork is that you seem to capture (for me at least) the Singapore I remember from the mid 70's. Many many years later my Hainan Chicken Rice and Bak ku teh are quite passable in my own humble unbiased opinion. 😊

Great video, thank you! I see you pulled out the precious kremer paints! And you also used a different paper than usual! A little change which is nice. You also use the cheaper but very good Baohung (did I spell it right?) paper a lot. You did a review on the paper. It's 100% cotton and very nice student grade paper. Also, you've talked about the white gel pens you could get at a decent price. You've also reviewed the posca pens you could use as an alternative. They sell these pens individually too. You have used jelly roll white pens yourself in your videos! You've compared prices of watercolor paints and sizes over the the years. Fountain pens too! You've let us know we don't have to pay high prices for pens! I remember you wanted to buy the Baohung hot press cause u were impressed with the cold press. You've also reviewed handmade watercolor which can be very pricey and compared them to commercial paints, showing that you have to use more of it than the commercial brands and it's really no better. So what I'm trying to get across to people who probably haven't watched your very informative videos is that Art is NOT just for the wealthy, Art is for EVERYONE!! Thank you Teoh for all you have done for us over the years!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I’m still using the Baohong paper which is affordable and good!

You've always done comparisons on everything and opted for the cheaper if they are just as good if not better!! And I'm probably not the only one who is grateful for this information! We can always count on you for good information. Thanks again!❤️

You can pickup a full-pan set of Rosa Gallery watercolors for $16 for those looking to get into watercoloring. You don’t have to pay $80 for a set of paints if you are an occasional painter. Hopefully my comment won’t be deleted for suggesting an affordable option.

Lovely sketch!! Could you please share what ink is in your pen? PS: thank you for letting us know about your Patreon account. I’ll be heading over. I love your videos because you share your supplies and talk about how they work and affect the peace of art. I don’t often see that with other RU-vidrs. ❤

Great pix! What tape did you use, it seemed to come off so easy…
@teohyc
@teohyc 11 месяцев назад
It's scotch tape, matte. If you have tape that is too sticky, just run it on your t shirt once or twice before pasting onto the paper

Do you have certain paints that you always use? Do you have a palette of colours that is distinctly yours? Or do you just use whatever paints that are available?
@teohyc

Right now my palette is Azo Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Anthraquinoid Scarlet, Phthalo Blue GS, Cobalt Blue Deep, Burnt Sienna

@@awatercolourist I just use whatever I have on hand. It's mostly Daniel Smith because their prices are lower compared to other brands (WN, Schmincke) here in Singapore, and they have wider variety of colours

Amazing work. I found a blog of yours from 2017 on how to make art tutorials. I was wondering if you recommend recording the art video first, then recording the audio after that? Just curious about the order of things - thank you!

Materials used way beyond most people’s budget. Derwent paper…$56.00 for a 7x10 pad…$80.00 for 14 pan colors? Nice for all the rich artists watching. Art is for the wealthy…

You don't need to buy expensive sets. Frankly, I've never heard of that brand he's using. There are several brands such as white nights (full pan set) or Van Gogh, WN Cotman, Mungyo, etc which are excellent and inexpensive. There are even some Sennelier (Pro line) and Daniel Smith sets which are inexpensive in the US. As for paper, the options are too vast to post. Use of expensive paper is generally done by RU-vidrs to show you an optimal view or by those with commissions (being paid). Btw, if you look over his videos, you'll see that he both uses and has reviewed all sorts of paint and paper brands. Also, watch for sales.
