"On April 17 [1945], the 273d Combat Team, with the support of attached armored and tank destroyer units, received the order to advance on Leipzig, assuming the sector previously held by the 271st. Early the following morning the regiment, with its attached units, reached an assembly point at Lieberwolkwitz. Here the battalions were given separate missions for the attack on the city proper. One company was detached to "Task Force Zebra," which was composed, except for this company, of tanks and tank destroyers. This task force moved directly into the city riding on the armored vehicles, and despite strong opposition, had reached the City Hall by early evening. Meanwhile, the First and Second Battalions were advancing in their respective sectors. The First Battalion was encountering stiff resistance on the road toward Holzhausen, while the Second Battalion had advanced into Leipzig and was engaged in fighting near the Sports Palace against well dug-in and defended enemy positions." For all those who are interested, here are some (today's) streets, which are shown in this film 00:05 could be Riesaer Straße 00:27 Todays second Trainbridge at the Beginning of the Wurzener Straße 00:33 Wurzener Straße and side street Portitzer Straße 00:36 Wurzener Straße, behind the Sherman is a small gas station which has not been used as such since the reunification of Germany 01:13 Todays Eisenbahnstraße, parallel to the Wurzener Straße 01:16 Should be todays Torgauer Platz filmed to the south, one of a side street from Eisenbahnstraße connecting to Wurzener Straße - todays Edlichstraße 01:22 Torgauer Platz also filmed to the south, todays Torgauer Straße 01:29 Sherman tanks could be driving on the Bennigsenstraße 01:51 crossing the Torgauer Platz on the Eisenbahnstraße 02:04 could be Graßdorfer Straße 02:28 Hermann-Liebmann-/Konradstraße (more info by searching leipzig schoene-maschinenfabrik) 02:50 should be the Eisenbahnstraße 03:04 Friedrich List Platz, filmer is standing in Lutherstraße 03:28 Friedrich List Platz, filmer turns south, Buildings of todays Rosa-Luxembourg-Straße I think the rest is as at Friedrich List Platz 05:02 unfortunately I can not assign this street BTW. the Eisenbahnstraße was called Ernst-Thälmann-Straße in the GDR BTW2 for the description: the assembly point should have been in Liebertwolkwitz, not Lieberwolkwitz written without "t". From the film footage I am not sure if this place can be correct as the assembly point, because the film starts directly in the east 90 degrees, whereas Libertwolkwitz has a greater distance and is located in the southeast of Leipzig. I don't know how the tanks got from Liebertwolkwitz to the east where the film starts. I have no sense of time for that either. Distance is tripple as of Risaer Straße to Friedrich List Platz I grew up there in the 90s and recognized some buildings. I hereby neither support nor condone violence or war.

Very interesting. I note the sequence shown is Roll 1, Roll 3, Roll 2. Being out of order may have led to the location and distance issues?

Great footage. ...be cool if the history TV shows used some of these sorts of clips instead of the same tired old clips they've been recycling for the last 50 years.

some were smiling, they were glad that it was the US instead of the Red Army took over Leipzig. but what they did not know was according to previous arrangement, Leipzig would be handed over to the Soviets.

The city where all this was filmed appears mostly intact.

My mother fled EastOrussia , and wound up in Leipzig . During the bitter street fighting , as she hid in a cellar , she was sexually assaulted by an American soldier .

This is the staged clip correct?
@gistories4145
@gistories4145 Год назад
I don't think it is. They actually took fire from snipers and individual holdouts in Leipzig. If it had been staged, I think the filmed angles would have been better.
