Thanks to a subscriber we have a new toy to play with !! Parked for many years can me and fudge revive the West German icon ????? One way to find out !!!
Best thing on TV since only fools and Horses. I could almost smell the two stroke smoke through the screen. Brilliant episode, my Sunday viewing is now complete. Bring on the road test 😂
Brilliant! Always wanted one of those. Loving the 2-stroke dinosaur. Fudge kneeling in petrol with a roll up reminds me of my youth trying to get things started. Best laugh I've had all week. 😅
As a Trabant owner, I just HAD to watch this. Mine is a 1988 estate from Bulgaria. The mechanicals are 'OK', it's always the brakes and electrics that tend to go sideways. Watching this series with interest.
I worked with a East German engineer who had worked at the Trebant plant in the wait for it........ research and development department!😮 Even though the design didn't change in it's 40 year history. It turns out they sold their ideas to the west. They designed and built a prototype of the MK1 Golf, but we're told to crush it when they sold the design to VW, the engineers hid it instead it's now in the Trabant museum. He told me you had to wait 12 years for one so used ones were more expensive than new ones. I did drive my friends one, a green estate that was an experience😂 😂😂😂
They where well ahead of there time as a car company, some of the stuff they designed was epic but sadly the failing economy stopped them from going into production 👍
A good friend of mine was born and raised in east Germany and 1981 his father ordered a brand spanking new gray Trabant. After a 2 year wait they received a light yellow one. No questions asked about the wrong color because they knew they had to wait another 2 years for another one that also might be wrong. They had the yellow one until 1992 when they moved to Sweden.
Got to love a 2 stroke, thats where most people start with there journey into repairing and tinkering, Mainly with Motorcycles in this country, but love the sound and smell of a 2 stroke, takes me back to my youth with My first Bike a Kawazaki AR80.
Dang, de dang, dang, dang. I remember them well. As a Brit ex-pat residing in Berlin since 1980 we could smell the two-stroke oil from East Berlin in the West. On the transit route to West Germany there were always a plethera of 'trabies' standing on hard shoulder being repaired in situ by their proud owners. In East Germany there was a black market for used trabies because there was a 10 year waiting list for a new one. The last version in the mid 1980's was fitted with a VW 1.1 4 stroke petrol engine licensed directly from VW. When the wall came down you could buy these death traps for pennies when their previous owners were 'upgrading' to large Fords with more oomph. There are still enthusiasts who restore maintain and race these cars but it has become expensive due to the scarcity of parts. I never ever expected to see one of these in the UK.
Ahhh, I'm glad you ended up with this. I got an email about it coz I'm in the Trabant club, but I don't have the space to have it. So I got dad to message you as I thought you might like it. Can't wait to come down and have a look at it when we pick up our t4 😁😁😁
Honestly you both are the best distraction ever, wife n I have poured a pint sized shot glass each of lubrication of a certain persuasion and are thoughly enjoying this. Our lad has gone on a school trip so house is too quiet. You and Fudge are making up for his absence in spades 😂
2 stroke trabant, real peoples car from the past. Eco crowd will have a kiliption. Great find. I wonder will dipotane in the petrol eliminate the blue smoke.,ye should fit a honda 700cc quad engine in her
I reckon you need to drive it up to see Guy Ritchie over at Compton Abbas airfield as they used a 601 "limousine" in his film Man from UNCLE, he lives virtually on yer doorstep anyways so you might be able to get a hire out for a props car with the old thing.
Drove one of these around Berlin with the missus The most fun you can have with anything made of plastic including anything you could find in a Czechoslovakian sex shop lol what a find!!!!
Your fuel mixing methodology is exactly how I fuel my chainsaw. Stand there, try some calculations in the head, fail, slosh random amounts of oil and fuel in the tank, justify my actions with a few positive words and then hope it works. Literally always starts.
As I've said in another recent comment, I'm in Canada, actually in the Toronto area. I was on the way to work one morning and got stuck in traffic. Turns out it was following a Trabant doing about 30KPH in a 70KPH limit. Not built for what we consider 'highway speed'.
I feel it needs to be called Greta! Someone at Uni had one of these in the late 90's. I suspect it had a new engine because it flew along. Can you imagine one of these flying through the streets of Salford in a cloud of blue smoke. It was truly a sight to behold. Don't leave it in the rain... I've heard the bodywork turns to gruel! Best one yet lads. Can't wait for it to become your daily driver.
I’m only 5 mins in and already loving this! The excitement coming from you al is unreal, I’m chuffed for you. Right fudge has just arrived so I’m gonna carry on watching mate
Try and find that Channel 4 programme where Robbie Coltrane takes apart and rebuilds one of these with the supplied toolkit of a 13 and a 17mm pair of spanners and a Soviet screwdriver.
Well, what can I say? You fellas have excelled yourselves, again! Absolutely brilliant fettling and top entertainment, long may you keep buying stuff you don’t need and, most importantly, having proper fun……
Your missus is right! you have been smoking something you should'nt have. This makes the Reliant look like a limo. These things were sh!t when they were new....and here you are with this and you actually paid money? Do you keep chickens? Take the wheels off it and put them in it. In any case I'm sure you and fudge will make it fun to watch. 😁👍
Funnily enough my wife won't travel in my cinquecento and it's positively brand new compared to this contraption 😂 Still watching video so unwise to comment further except to say love the car and tinkering by 6d two-stroke 😂 and his able assistant 👍🇮🇪
Excellent vid again mate top notch and both of you are such comedians just like the chuckle brothers pmsl just like me and me dad who work together daily with 2 stroke chainsaws we are loggers lol peace lads ✌
You two should have a slot on Top Gear if it ever returns, your hilarious. I love 2 strokes tho, my schoolboy moto x days infected my mind & ive never recovered. What a great way to stick two fingers up at net zero Al.
Top quality video Al, i remember back in the early 90's when everyone and their mates were bringing them trabby's into the country🤭🤭🤭 but i'm very disappointed with you and fudge, i was expecting to see you both drive off dressed as the KGB at the end🤣🤣🤣🤣
I knew it was a Trabant before I knew which country it came from.😂 The Trabant was one of the best known Communist cars on European roads.😮 Well done Al, look forward to where this 👏 will go. ❤😊
Genuine glee at his latest foreign acquisition.....a nasty horrible rotting lump of Czechoslovakian tripe! But you got it to go! Great video and the one liners keep coming. Well done lads.
Brilliant its Sunday....Had me tea sat down in my soft seat, now where's Al... I always like AL & Fudge Sunday madness, it helps to make me feel normal... Now i'm an understanding man, i can make allowances for all sorts of deviations, mention of papier mache, i was, aggast... Swing into view, a warped looking Austin cambridge/M Oxford, not even a Vanden plas Princess 4L.... Now i'm not a DR but even i know when a man needs help....Im not even going bother to phone the DR for him... The best place for that, is durdle door and hope it blows away...
