They actually have us put grease on the splines of output shaft. GM part #9985830. I still use part #1051344, which is GM wheel bearing grease that GM was having us use back in the early 6L80 days on the Cadillac CTS 6L50 where the splines between the trans output shaft and the transfer case would strip out.

Supposeddly built with the latest and greatest stuff. They did put in a cooler bypass kit that keeps the oil 50 degress cooler than it used to run.

I just changed the transmission oil 15k miles ago and it’s really dark, so it’s cooking every time I drive. Looks as if that model GMC could use an additional transmission cooler in front of the radiator ! Also, you would really have to wonder if the pump and stator were replaced in the first rebuild. It's interesting to note that most of this "wear" came from the torque converter vs. the frictions. This is exactly why Sonnax and TransGo parts are a required option with every trans rebuild.
@jeremymardlin5381
@jeremymardlin5381 Год назад
It doesn't work if it has the stock 195 thermostat in it. You don't get any cooler flow till it opens. GM did update the thermostat to a 156 that helps cooling. Using the kit so there is no thermostat is the best bet for keeping them cool. The factory cooler works well. Mine only runs around 140 to 150 in the summer without the thermostat for the cooler lines.
@Garth2011
@Garth2011 Год назад
@@jeremymardlin5381If you reference the fluid in this transmission...it will help with the kit. The stock idea cooked his fluid.

I did a bypass in mine. In something like 2018 they changed the spring in them so it opens at 156 instead of 195. I recommend to people to either get that thermostat or the kit you are putting in the cooler lines block.

Pretty sure that's what killed mine in my 2014. Started the shudder just after 250,000 miles. Always thought the trans temp seemed high. Wish I would have known!
@jeremymardlin5381
@jeremymardlin5381 Год назад
@billthepainter5106 your milage was pretty good for them. Mine burnt up the torque converter at 130,000 and was replaced. That converter failed in less than 40,000. That's when I rebuilt mine. I still have the cooler kit that Richard is using and the updated thermostat. Mine typically runs 100 to 110 degrees above the outside temperature when its cold out and about 50 to 60 when it's hot out when not towing.

Doubt I will ever own a pickup past GMT800 but was curious about the oem parts in the 6Lx0 that need upgrading and Richard doesn't disappoint. Any of you regulars remember a comment Richard made quite a while back on a 4L60/80 about "That's the reason I don't like to rebuild carry-in transmissions" as some linkage or something that the owner installed wrong and killed a newly rebuilt transmission after a few miles? Too many of his vids in my history to go thru them all.

My cooler mounted sensor measures 150 degrees trans fluid temp when the fan is always on. Should I install a 180 degree thermostat or run the fan always on and keep the trans fluid at 150? Does the 4L80E need a certain temperature to fun most efficiently?
