A quick video on 3-5-R clutch failure and to demonstrate air check procedures to confirm or deny the drum's base welds are responsible for burn-up of the 3-5-R clutch.
Applies to all years and models of General Motors (GM) 6L45, 6L50, 6L80 and 6L90 six speed automatic transmissions (2006-2023).

Hello Nick. Thanks for taking the time to educate folks on these transmissions. I know it takes a lot of time, not only to shoot, but also edit these videos. Not to mention your shop time away from rebuilding. I have a question for you. I have a 2009 6L90 4x4 in for bench overhaul. I've gotten everything spick & span clean. I've vacuum tested the valve body & will replace the seals & diaphragms in the TEHCM. This unit suffered the usual converter failure, taking out the front pump. The filter was plugged which most likely, fried the 4-5-6 clutches. My question for you is: how do you clean the TEHCM? I have a safety kleen machine filled with mineral spirits, an ultrasonic cleaner here in the shop. I buy brake cleaner in bulk & spray it out of a air pressurized Zep canister. I'm interested to hear how you clean the TEHCM? Thank you sir

Hi keltecfan, thank you for watching and your kind words as always. I use CRC QD Electronic cleaner on the TEHCM and hit it with some compressed air. Same w/the internal mode switch though I replace those like 99% of the time. Sounds like you have it headed in the right direction.

I have a 2012 truck transmission. Just started flaring/delaying 3-5-R. Going to check reg valve, and tecm prior to pulling the trans out. The soind of the clutch still applying even with that big leak has me thinking ill be pulling this though. Guess i can half way air check it in the truck. We'll see.

Hi GoodEnoughEnginneering - thank you for watching! Flaring is almost always caused by the drum welds leaking but you can vac-check the 3-5-R boost and PR valve to see if the VB is worn there (there are kits available to ream that bore oversize and install a larger ratio boost valve (in fact all three clutch boost valves are the same so you can do all three). You can also air check via the 3-5-R feedhole in the pump cover once the VB/TEHCM assembly is out of the way....there you'd be looking/listening for a lot of hissing coming from the base of that 3-5-R drum between it and the pump when you do the air check (the 1-2-3-4 clutch feed hole will likely have no hissing whatsoever by comparison).

Nick I really enjoy your content thank you, I do have a question for you concerning these goofy 6L80's have you ever experienced a random hiccup / buck during downshifts on these things after a rebuild? Air test was perfect, compensator feed held. What gives?
@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions 2 месяца назад
Hi THP, thank you for the kind words! I have experienced a few bumps and hicuups within the first five to seven drive cycles with these transmissions as they ease back into working again after overhaul...The fast adapt relearns are usually good for 99-100% but every now and again, final adaptations will take place in those first few drive cycles or so...If it keeps happening after that, I'd conduct a full diagnostic to pinpoint the source of the problem. Did you replace the TEHCM and install a valve body correction kit like the Sonnax Zip kit or Transgo Reprogramming kit?

Basically, it is a full rebuild with bushings, bellhousing, stator, and the transgo SK6l80 and 6l8 cs tcc kit.

Nick, see you do a multitude of transmissions. Which one is your "bread and butter" that you do the most of? I do mostly 80e's but don't have a lot of demand.
@steveb4762

4L80e's i.e.

Hi Steve, most of my stuff is GM with 4L60s and 4L80s accounting for the lion's share of them...about 25% Ford (3, 4, 5 and shortly, 6 speeds) and maybe 10% Dodge 3 and 4 speeds. I occasionally do some foreign stuff like BMW ZFs, Toyota and Nissan.

I am from India, and currently facing an issue with this transmission in my car and unable to find the respecitve parts for the same and wanted to know if that is something that you can help me with. Tata an Indian Brand has a car with GM 6L50 transmission and I am specifically looking for 3-5 REVERSE CLUTCH DRUM. is there a possibility to source a new part
@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions 8 месяцев назад
Hi Vivek, thank you for watching. You actually don't need to source a new 3-5-R drum unless there's damage to it other than at the base welds. Once you have the transmission apart, reinforce the weld at the base with a new weld bead all the way around that area of the drum to prevent further 3-5-R clutch failures. ETA: Check eBay for parts, kits, etc...Most of the big transmission parts suppliers based in the US will ship worldwide, except to places like Russia, Iran and North Korea.

What’s the link for that tool. I purchased one that looks similar but doesn’t fit

I'd send it back and have the vendor either refund you or send the correct version of the tool...You may have gotten a 6L45/50 version (I can't recall if the inner diameter is different than the 3-5-R drums on the 80s and 90s but I think it is).

Check eBay, that's where I got mine. I can't recall who the seller was but I see those drum air checking tools on there from time to time...Just message the seller to confirm the tool is meant to be used on the 6L80/90 and not the 45/50 (some tools may work on all of them) so you get the tool you need.
