I started the Pacific Crest Trail only carrying 5lbs of gear on my back, which I intended to use nothing more for the next 4 months. Roughly I've used a similar kit for the last 7,000 miles of my hiking life, so feel comfortable talking about it.

I absolutely enjoy the practical way that you have with gear along with the experience on the trail. I still have my boy scout mess kit from the 70's although I also have the new titanium stuff. My brother and I used to get tomato stakes and blankets and camp in the mountains with that. Having to buy the lightest and most expensive things can be discouraging for many hikers but all info is very helpful from all fellow hikers. Thank you.

I love utilizing old gear that still works. I also have my old scouts mess kit (although mine from the 90s) and I still use it today. I don't bring the whole thing, just the large bowl/pot and a pot handler - and those two items weigh less than 3oz. Considering you can pick up the mess kits for 10 dollars... not really seeing the point of titanium pots.

Holy shit! I'd never have 6lbs base wieght... I like the tent, sleeping bag, and thicker mat idea and I dont think I could compromise on that (at least for the first through hike). You are a much braver man than I!

You can have a Tent, Sleeping Bag and pack all Under 3lb... Zpacks makes this easy as well as some other companies. The Zpacks Plexamid tent (while expensive) weighs less than 15oz. Combine that with a 1lb bag and a 10.8oz ZPacks Nero pack and you're in business.

@@NoloPrime I use mostly Zpacks gear, and my base weight is about 8 pounds. I use the bigger pack and the Duplex because I hike mostly with my dog, and I carry all of her food and sleep system. He is definitely a lot harder gore than I but then again, I am more than twice his age. Sleeping on that thin pad would kill me and I like my tent. I got stuck in a 10-inch rainstorm in Vermont a couple of weeks ago. I don't think a tarp would have cut it, my tent barely did. I love my hiking poles and it's probably one of my favorite pieces of gear and the most essential pieces of gear. He has helped me to take a real look at my gear and I have dropped a few pounds. Gear has gotten so light it's great. Take care.

Ultra light is definitely for the advanced backpacker. A novice can get into a lot of trouble. If you’re going down that road perfect you’re skills on short trips with easy bail options Incase you miss calculate.

Yeah I know a guy that went off trail camping in Denali and went ultralight......he said he wouldn't do that again because it turned off cold and the ultralight gear he brought didn't allow for that kind of temp drop.

There are two way to get to SUL spending a ton of cash or going without. You've done both. There is no doubt that your experience tells you what your resupply cycle is going to be and where you will fill in the gaps in your gear. But then there are some basics that might be considered required... water filter, sunscreen, bug repellent, soap or hand sanitizer, toilet paper. Thanks for sharing.

As for the other things it is all well reasoned and calculated as to why I don't carry those. I'll mention one, bug repellent! Growing up in the swamps of South Florida I've actually unknowingly built an immunity to mosquitoes. They bite people around me to oblivion, but not me. And when they do get Mei show no swelling or redness and don't get itchy. So why would I carry that? I do spray all my clothes with permethrin for ticks but beyond that I don't feel I need more. :)

I use almost entirely boxes but don't think you need to. It's just as easy out west as on the AT, if not easier as there's more organic stores and a bigger market for vege foods

Im from Florida too! I eventually made it out to Cali and am exploring the Sierras but have yet to do a through hike. Little time available these days. I bought a 2017 ULthermawrap jacket and love it. No hood, super light and it has nice pockets. Not very warm but feels great most of the time. Love your videos!

@@markcummings6856 well I mostly use a jacket first thing in the morning and in temperatures down to the 50s the jacket is fine. Below that it's just part of a layering system. For example I would need to have a long sleeve shirt on underneath the jacket in order to stay warm below 50 degrees. YMMV.

Hey Jupiter, fellow Floridian/2016 AT hiker here, my friends and I love your content and we're truly sorry about you having to leave the PCT. Couple questions, sorry if they've been asked: What's your favorite section(s) of the Florida Trail, out of all your snake encounters have any come close to actually striking and what's your top 3 podcasts?

Favorite section was the short 18 miles of the Aucille River! Though Florida has so many good ones. And on my FT thru I didn't actually see a single snake! Beyond that, only due to my own negligence have I gotten close. But no not really, keep your eyes peeled. Podcasts: stuff you should know, the routes podcast, and Joe Rogan. Then searching for interviews with people I look up to randomly.

what made it a disaster? I think thats when you learn the most. I've talked about my first backpacking trips before but starting out on that first trip I only brought a towel and some water, thinking for some reason that would get me 3 days and 30 miles. I look back fondly!

Great video dude thanks for creating quality content. I am trying to get into backpacking andi have the 1/8 pad and I actually really love it and was planning to take it on a trip but was scared it wouldn't insulate me from the ground. Now i see you used it on the PCT! How did it work out in that category? Where i go backpacking the average temp is about 35 degrees f. Do you think it can work?

I use my food bag as my pillow! The opsak itself goes towards a larger system I employ regarding not spreading odors at camp. I don't usually eat where I sleep, choosing to eat a couple miles before bed. I don't cook my food, which the fire would help to spread odors. And I don't camp at well known spots where animals are used to finding food. I feel all together this is pretty good for keeping animals on their toes!

Did some more reduction to my AT Gear List. Have it down to an Estimated 6lb 11.5oz. Not positive about some of the clothing items yet so that's my most likely source of error if any. Still not sure what I will start with for food. I'm definitely not capable of eating only Bean's even though I absolutely love them. I will however be cold soaking and will be taking Bean recipes lol. Thanks for all the help J..

I found a healthy substitute for Ibuprofin and it is bromelain, an enzyme from pineapple that is great for pain from inflammation. Since ibuprofin is so hard on the stomach and bromelain is easy, then it makes a much better pain reliever. Google 'bromelain inflammation'. Also, I cook and I learned about the empty peanut butter jar on the trail last year. I would soak the rice or whatever and when I was ready to eat, I would make a sauce and heat that up, then when that was ready I would throw in my soaked rich and bring that to a boil. Hot food without using very much fuel. Still weighs more than no stove, though.

Michael Grimes I’ve found black tar heroin to be a low cost alternative to Vicodin. It’s also lighter for the same pain relief. It gets the job done!

Thanks for the vid. Curious--how do you deal with bugs with the tarp? Like..mosquitoes in the Sierras, or worse--where you are in Florida? I have an 8 lb BPW only because I'm not as hardcore as you. (Need a full length inflatable pad, pillow, etc. Look forward to more gear reviews.

Well being from Florida I actually have an immunity built up hah! So the mosquitoes both don't bother me, and when they do bite me I don't get itchy or swell up. In the past I used a head net or a bivy. If bugs are truly bad though I would use a hexamid. It's truly an amazing tent. I dont really like bivies.

My bones are little too old for a very minimal sleep setup, currently testing out the klymit inertia xlite 5.6 oz vs. Torso-length large thermarest xlite pad. I haven't tried cowboy camping, even with a tarp, because I enjoy my zpacks duplex ... it's my bedroom while in Nature. Cowboy camping is a mental thing for me too.

Very good video. Very good selection of gear. How do you protect yourself from insects and other creatures? I am 57 years old, I don’t think I will ever be able to be comfortable on such a small thin Matt. There are some come forward but I cannot give up but I highly admire you. Thanks for sharing, Jupiter! Whats the coldest temp you faced on the PCT? I've debated the FKT or Spirit quilt for stuff in Canada. I've done 0C/32F with the SOL Escape Bivvy, toe warmers and lots of clothes but usually use a cheap but light 45F bag inside the SOL Escape for those temps.

I woke up one morning surrounded by ice in the Sierra. I was fine with what I had, but man it was hard to get up out of it! A bivy would be great for just a tiny bit of warmth. Then again I should have set up my tarp super super low for that same result because bivies are not a lot of bang for the weight

One Trekking Stick for me also. Seems that you and the author of _Three Hundred Zeros: Lessons of the Heart on the Appalachian Trail_ , Dennis R. Blanchard, are the only other two I know of that are one stick carriers. I am sure there are many more; just seems two is more the norm.

I believe the power bank has power delivery 3.0, even if they don't mention this on amazon. Unfortunately power delivery 3.0 works only on it's full capacity if you have a good wall outlet for your self. Most of the time many devices hang on one outlet, slowing down the recharge process. I am not yet arrogant enough to just disconnect everybody else in order to get full recharging speed for my self...

Soak your Sunday afternoons hat in permethrin. I've found due to its large size it can keep bugs away all around your head - meaning you don't need a bug net in super buggy areas.

Going this light sounds cool and obviously can do it well but how much are you missing out on by focusing so much on weight restriction? How much of the experience is missed?

While on trail I dont focus on it at all. I would argue that having less things allows me personally to focus more on the experience, landscape, and travel. Saving time, moving more comfortably, and doing exactly what I want with the freedom of a small pack. Not burdened or held back by possessions that may possibly not add anything positive to the overall experience. This is my opinion at least and how I look at it. I pack up in 5 minutes, and comfortably move all day. Unless of course I wish not to, but the point is I have the ability, and I'd like to think maybe a wider range of ability due again to a lighter pack.

Depends on how much a comfy bed, hot meal, and bug protection are to you personally. Also with no knife, GPS, fire starter, water filter, or first aid kit you're going to be depending a lot on your skill to keep you out of trouble. Jupiter plays on hardcore mode, I'm too soft to give all that up.

I like your channel. You are very good at communicating your ideas and experiences. But one thing I just don’t understand. I know you don’t like carrying a water filter. But if you get gardia, won’t you then be spreading the big around?? Just seems counterproductive to me. Am I missing something??

Love this setup but not for me! I’m at the 8.5-9pound range and I’m very happy with that. I couldn’t go with that kind of pad or sleeping bag. I like sleeping cold to a point. Also still carrying a cook system which adds a little weight and I recently picked up a 3ish oz pillow to improve sleep and I won’t hike without it. Otherwise similar stuff to a point. I carry enlightened equipment wind pants and jacket. Most of my hikes are in SoCal and doesn’t rain here much. Going to be applying for my PCT permit on November 14!!!!! And I think I’m going to be picking up a nicer, lightweight rain jacket to carry for the whole time. Will probably not end up carrying both rain jacket and wind jacket since there’s no point. Anyways can’t wait for PCT 2019

I'm at 6 pounds and I have a xlite short pad you can do it and still be comfortable but it will have to take the place of something else. I don't carry camera gear or electronics so that's a trade off

ibuprofen is not a first aid kit.......half the time if you get a headache on the trail it's dehydration......taking ibuprofen in that instance is ignoring the actual problem.....but you are only carrying 3 liters of water.....may or may not be able to overcome the dehydration till the next water point.

My plan was I started late and thus I needed less because the snow would mostly be melted and Temps would be warmer. If I was you I'd have a slightly beefier quilt than I did but I was fine. One night in the Sierra was uncomfortable the rest were good. Sometimes I look at it like if I'm hiking for 90 days and I only experience one two or three uncomfortable nights the entire way, it's worth it to have the lighter kit the majority of the time.

Let me know if you have any questions, I'm all about theorizing kits that look stupid light from the outside but are in the end more practical than they seem. If nothing else maybe I could make you think and you just take what you like, and modify it to suit your needs.

Other than known brand quality is there a reason you want the PCT jacket as opposed to the EE torrid? Is it due to the different Apex weights?

awe man pockets! such a huge thing. If my hands are cold then im very unhappy. Without pockets I'm reduced to walking with my hands in my crotch and thats a very bad look. The PCT comes with zippers but i asked them to just do open ones and they did that no extra charge. I'll probably do a video on the jacket very soon going more in depth but for now that's a big reason. I dont wish to carry gloves on top of gloves, and to have a place to store snacks, phone, etc outside of the palantes pockets is just great. The warmth in general is also a big thing, using a heavier apex, the quality of the build, and the torrid looks to me like it uses a tiny little im-going-to-break zipper compared to the more robust pct. A full body top down zip is also important to me opposed to the half zip or no zip. Also I think a chest zipper pocket is useless so those other jackets are out. And beyond this there's another big UL company releasing a synth jacket which may be the worst of all cutting corners they shouldn't to save weight. Anyway I spent a lot of time looking around and comparing before I settled. Some are appealing but this is my top choice. Saving weight for less function isn't always best

Do you have any trouble with your gear at airports? I had some issues last time because of trekking poles; “club-like item”. I actually left them behind and bought cheaper Walmart brand upon arrival.

I have only taken a trekking pole through an airport once and it was ok. It was even one that couldn't be collapsed fully. I think unfortunately it's a site by site, person by person thing. Some security are going to be looser about it than others. I've heard people having knives taken away as well that are well within what you should be able to but I never had the issue. The only thing I get checked on pretty much everytime is my big food bag, but they've always been nice about it after some talking and searching. I guess the safest way is to ship a few items prior, but I'll probably forever try and talk my way out of them liberating any of my gear.

Can you share your food plan? How much calories per day and the weight of the food. How do choose light weight food still have needed calories and nutrients?

I usually start with a little less calories as my body isn't yet adapted to eating more, and bump it up over time. It's different for everyone but something to pay attention to with each resupply so I can adjust and add more, or buy less next town. Often times though I think 4,500 or so is about what I like. Nuts and seeds are very dense in calories, and olive oil added to dinner is another way to carry less while still getting a lot from what you have. Some candies like snickers are better than others and why you see them so frequently. Food though is such a nice motivator I would not skimp or go nuts on less, instead just adjust over time

The bulk of the weight you want as close to your core as possible so I put my food bag closest to my back in the middle

Didn't need to switch packs, a bear can fits inside (or on top of) any of the palante packs. Just had mine shipped to kennedy meadows and headed out. Similar story for the PNT except I rented one, stuffed it in, and was on my way

It's way more common to get sick from those around you than it is from the water you collect. Not a lot of people keep very clean while hiking. So a big plus to remain totally solo, no fist bumps, hand shakes, and keep to myself mostly on trail. In other words, I didn't feel it necessary to filter my water on the PCT, or any of the east coast trails I did in the last 4 years. If I were to filter I would use a sawyer squeeze :)

Let me tell you how smell proof your food bag is.....well not bear smell proof, but I took it on my last Whitney hike. The hike where you pack out your poo...right, I'm going there. We had a bomb that was just killing trail camp...like that really bad baby diaper that you left in the car on your last hike. I'm talking worse than downtown Detroit. In it went and you could press your face up against it. Best 7.00 ever spent.

That's good to know! Though not the best mental image. In places that have bear cans required but everywhere else I use this bag, I don't cook, and sleep in non established places. Which I figure all together is far better than just a shitty bear hang after a long day.
