This is our rebuild project of the 7 1/4” gauge Duke of Gloucester. Built by the late Dennis Evans, she’s a full 3 cylinder Caprotti valve gear masterpiece and we are proud to be trusted with her rebuilding. For more information like us on Facebook, follow us on Instagram or visit our website page for this loco. www.steamworkshop.co.uk/portfolio/sw-rebuild-no-17/

I knew Dennis well and had the honour of being allowed into his garden shed workshop, which was crowded with engineering machinery. On the Duke he proudly showed me all the parts were made, by hand, by himself! Every thing to scale even the nuts and bolts and included the Black 5 also using working Caprotti valve gear as were his smaller models, the 5" and 3½" Duke, all of which functioned perfectly! I have never seen such skilled work done in miniature, it was pure magic!

I only work in live steam gauge 1 and sometimes work on full size locomotives. This however seems to be the holy grail. The pinnacle of what can be achieved. Flabbergasted, from Germany!

Hello, what a watchmaker's job, words fail me to describe this mechanical masterpiece!! Have you made videos on all the manufacturing steps, it must be exciting but the video editing difficult. Many thanks for making me dream.

It's just a thing of beauty to see this running, with all the 'parts' of the Caprotti gear on display! Helps me understand the mechanics of the system in a way no amount of diagrams or animations could! And superbly crafted and put together - bravo!

I came here via Keith Appleton's videos. I find it quite incredible what some people can achieve mechanically: A machine of this quality should be in a museum!

Woah! This is just poetry in motion on another level! Insanely well engineered there! Always loved the Duke of Gloucestershire loco!

Oh my gosh...it is my dream loco! I have always loved the Duke. Would it be possible (once the rebuild is complete) to have another video of the finished engine moving under her own steam?

Didn't quite understand how The Duke's valve gear worked for it's third cylinder till this video. Very impressive work.

If they can make the revolving rod drive from the return cranks a practical possibility in 4mm scale, I'll be very impressed

A very good friend passed several years ago, he worked at Patricroft mpd, he did the Caprotti valve gear ! he once showed me drawings he had been given and he kept them in a tube at home, after his funeral his wife rang me and asked me to call and take whatever I wanted that Henry had collected, I asked about the tube with the drawings but she had disposed of the tube, she had no interest in any of her husbands collections, it's a shame everything he had relating to his job he treasured.
