I think you should make the answer choices a little bit more challenging. Without doing the math, the answer has to be below 50 percent since 7/12 is filled. So the answer has to be (a)-41.7 percent. All the other choices makes absolutely no sense at all since it exceeds 50 percent.
@panlomito
@panlomito 6 месяцев назад
That is only right if you presume John gives at least one correct answer... but imagine all answers are false: and they are ! Answer A (41.7 %) is quite close but is it close enough? Say the multiple choice options are: A. 41.7 % B. 41.6 % C. 41.666 % D. 41 2/3 % What would be your answer?
@thomasharding1838
@thomasharding1838 8 дней назад
@@panlomito 41.7% is rounding to the thousandth place, .417. And your answer is wrong because the 6s continue to infinity. Your "correct" answer should be 41.667%, not 41.666%. But, 41 2/3% also works.

Numerator divided by denominator results in decimal fraction. 7/12th = .583 and that times 100 = 58.3 percent 100% (total) - 58.3% (filled) = 41.7% (empty). Total - Filled = Empty

If I may there is another way I always use when I have to figure out %. I use what you call the cross product. 7/12 = x/100. 700 = 12x 700/12 = 58.33% The rest is easy. 100 - 58.33 = 41.7, give or take. It's easy to remember. If I have 10 for 20, what is x for 100. Cross product = 1000/20 = 50.

@@aryusure1943 I will show you how: x = 700 / 12 is what we are going to calculate old school! What is a nearby rounded number dividable by 12: 720 ( = 60 . 12) But then you are 20 over 700... 20/12 = 5/3 = 1 2/3 So x = 60 . 12/12 - 20/12 = 60 - 1 2/3 = 58 1/3 The rest is easy: 100 - 58 1/3 = 41 2/3 % no give or take but right on the spot. And please don't forget to use the % sign, without it the answer is incorrect.

Greetings. The only answer that seems correct by doing a rough calculation in my head is 41.7%. This is what I have done. First, we need to recognize that the container is 5/12 empty, multiplying this number by 100 gives the answer. Mentally I don't want to strain myself with determining the exact value of 500/12. Therefore, I simply say 100/12 equals 8 something, multiplying 8 by 5 gives 40 and since 40% is relatively close 41. 7%, the answer must be 41. 7%. With having concluded the answer, I now realize it would not have been much strain at all. 100/12=8 and 4/12 or 8 and 1/3 equals 8.3333. Multiplying 8.33 by 5 gives 41.65 rounded up to 41. 7%.

You really would do well to think a bit more about your multiple choice options. This is another one where you can immediately eliminate 3 of the 4 by trivial inspection. The empty proportion is less than half and only one of the options for the answer is below 50%. If you want to teach mathematics, why not choose questions that actually require some mathematics to get to the answer.

Stupid multiple choice again... you don't have to calculate anything, just recognize the painful simple fact that 7/12 is more than 50% and 5/12 is less than 50% (with 6/12 is 50%) and the ultimate stupid multiple choice gives only one answer below 50%... But we are here for math and so we will do math: What percentage is 5/12 ??? The most easy way is to raise the denominator to 100 then also multiply the numerator with this number and this will be the answer in percentage: y/100 = y % To get from 12 to 100 we have to multiply by x... with x = 100/12 = 96/12 + 4/12 = 8 1/3 Now we have to multiply the numerator also with 8 1/3: 5 x 8 1/3 = 40 + 5/3 = 41 2/3 So the correct answer to this question is not 41.7 % but 41 2/3 %.
