7/18/99: David Cone's Perfect Game 

My family went to David Well's perfect game for my brothers birthday in 98 and this one for my birthday in 99. I'm probably one of the few people in the world to have been at 2 perfect games... Will remember for the rest of my life awesome moments

This is still the only Major League no-hitter in which the pitcher (Cone) never had a single 3 ball count. Absolutely amazing and I doubt that will ever be done again.

I met David Cone on the subway yesterday coming back from the Yankees game! We talked about the game and his career. He autographed my glove "David Cone P.G. 7.18.99" It was officially the best day of my life. Such a great guy!

It's nice to watch a game that doesn't have an ad in between every pitch. I miss the 90's

When David Wells pitched his perfect game in 1998, Cone buried himself in his jacket, being even more silent and poker-faced than even Joe Torre. 14 months later, he cashes in on his karma. Not to mention, this was the first interleague perfect game since Don Larsen's World Series perfect game.

That he did this with Larsen and Berra in attendance celebrating Larsen's perfect game is almost unbelivable. The odds of this happening do not happen. That is Yankees history for you and that is the aura of that beautiful stadium.

Ah, Tino, how I love thee. My favorite Yankee still to this day. He was always about the team and respected the Yankee uniform. Team players are always the best players.

Seeing Davud Cone drop to his knees after that last out was made, Yankees fan or not, if that doesn't touch your heart, then chances are, you probably don't have one...

Greatest game I ever saw, hands down. My dad and I went down to the stadium for Yogi Berra Day, Don Larsen throwing out the first pitch? I swear, Yogi's luck rubbed off on everyone. I never saw a no hitter in person up to that point. It was fucking great. Gotta wonder what it cost David, though. He was never the same after this game, I really think that coming back into the game and finishing after the rain delay fucked up his arm. To think, I was...and am a mets fan. and I went fucking nuts after the ball was caught. First time we ever sat field level. We managed to get a great shot of Coney falling to his knees, despite the schmuck sitting in front of us. Hands down, I rate 7/18/1999 as one of the top ten best days of my life. No shit. Despite the mini panic attack I had during the thunderstorm.

Have to admit. I got choked up rewatching the final out. Coney is my favorite pitcher of all time, his repertoire, his change of speeds, his arm angles, his craftiness, and that NASTY slurve. That look of disbelief with his hand on his head, just so much emotion. LOVE IT!

I was born in 53 and from that time to now this team has been amazing, the only thing I would change if I could is 2011. It was something NY needed at the time.

That Yankees dynasty in the 90s was ridiculous, featuring a three-peat, 4 out if world series wins, a 125 win season, a no hitter by Doc in 1996, a perfect game by Wells in 1998 and Cone's perfecto in 1999. Amazing.

Thank's for the post, it was the next best thing to being there. A Yankee fan since '61, a kid living in L.A. I didn't get many chances to watch the Yankee's play. Thank God for MLB.

There seemed to be some sort of magic at Baseball's Cathedral, which I miss a lot. This day was an awesome example: It was Yogi Berra Day. Don Larsen threw the first pitch to Berra (they are the only pitcher and catcher tandem to work a perfect game in the postseason so far, en route to a World Series Championship for the Yankees that year). It was Joe Torre's birthday. Cone, of course, threw a perfect game. And the Yankees won. Just a splendid, perfect day!

It's nothing like playing or being a fan of the Yankees nothing. This was a perfect day twice for Cone and Yogi plus they were the champs and repeated in 1999. Picture & Pitcher Perfect Day Twice. I love the Yankees.

I was at this game. Before the game started, Cone was warming up in the bullpen and I shouted "Hey, Conehead, you ought to toss a perfect game today!" and he stopped throwing, looked at me with a thoughtful glance, smiled, and said "I think I will." At the seventh inning stretch, Cone found out where I was sitting and he had me sent down to the Yankees dugout. He said "Man, I don't know if I can do it. My arm feels like it is going to fall off." I took his hand, looked into his eyes, and said "David, you CAN do this! Believe in yourself!" Then I poked him in the belly like the Pillsbury Doughboy and he chuckled. After the game, he gave me the baseball from the last out. Then I went out to the parking lot and flew home on my magical dragon named Snuffy. True story.

Game was played on Yogi Berra Day, the first time Berra xset foot inside Yankee Stadium since George Steinbrenner fired him as Yankees manager in 1985. With him yhat day was Don Larsen, who pitched his own perfect game against the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series. Larsen shook Cone's hand before the game. Obviously it worked because Cone pitched his own perfect game.

So many players I like playing in this game.Jeter,O’Neill,Williams,Vladdy Sr and Jose Vidro.Pretty crazy how they kind of knew where the Expos were going to move to almost 6 years before it even happened.

I remember this day clear as day. We dropped off my older sister to her first sleep away camp and listened to the first half of the game on the way home. Put it up on the TV when we got home and will never forget the ending. Luckily we taped the game and still have a copy of the VHS somewhere. Thank you for posting it.

What's interesting listening to this broadcast is there was nearly zero commentary later and later on. With McCarver and Bobby Murcer probably not wanting to jinx it the almost dead silence between pitches added such a level of drama.

What a magical year of baseball it was in the Bronx. The Yanks went on to win the World Series later this year by sweeping the Braves and further cementing their legacy as the team of the century.

Greatest day with 11 year old daughter EVER.! May 17th 1998 - 15th perfect game to date. While waiting in line for nosebleed seats; a couple approached us and said they were to meet with friends 45 minutes earlier but could not find them. They said rather than giving tickets to drunkards, they'd prefer sitting next to us. 8th row, catered, right behind Yankees dugout. Could anyone ask for more? It was Yogi Berra Day (BB card & special pin). Don Larson thru 1st pitch to Yogi. I told daughter they were last to pitch a Yankee Perfect Game. She really had no idea how important & few Perfect Games in baseball history to that point. Too bad Our hosts left during 7th inning stretch. In the 8th inning a bouncing line drive to Chuck Knoblauch; he was ready to fire the ball at 1st base- he took a double step & simply tossed it. While Chuck held the ball u could've heard a pin drop in the black seat section; as he toss it to 1st the entire stadium released their breath simultaneously as cheers and laughter announced the sigh of relief... 24 up - 24 down. The 9th inning was extremely exciting only because no one dear make a sound with each pitch but the stadium roared with each of the last 3 outs... On our way home we attempted to figure out how many games were played throughout history that were not perfect & she understood the difference between a PERFECT GAME & a no hitter by the time we were home. Can a father have a better outing with his 11 year old daughter ?? 2021-1998- 23 full years later, she's 34 and I sometimes still hear her boasting to her husband, the kids and both their friends. I still have my pin but she has the ticket stubs, her pin & Yogi Berra lifetime achievement BB card... It's fantastic holding a memory like it was yesterday, opposed to other hurtful memories like what came just 3 years later. THANK YOU TO THAT COUPLE WHO GAVE US THE TICKETS.... I WISH U WOULD HAVE STAYED THE LAST 2½ INNINGS. IF U ever read this I hope you'll understand how special a day u gave us... A GREAT Memory to last a lifetime between a father and daughter... & YES, we still get along like magic. THANK YOU

A perfectly pitched game? How about a perfect Yankees baseball team? No egos. No superstars (yet). Just 9 good players having great seasons and playing as a unit. The Yanks may not have been the most overpowering team of its era but they had class, good sportsmanship, many players in their playing-prime, and lots and lots of spirit.

I remember watching this while visiting my grandparents, who lived on Long Island at the time. Really exciting to watch.

Derek Jeter should have easily won the AL Mvp in 1999. Peak of his natural athleticism at SS and the basepaths....and just like this game showed he was turning on pitches and showing some nice pop all year....24 HRs and nearly 100 rbi and needless to say had a great average. Best player, on the best team, at the most important position outside of possibly catcher...He should have won the MVP.

Cone always had wicked stuff. Once when he was a Met, he struck out the side on 9 pitches.

My family had tickets to this game. My mother lost them that day. Yep, my dad and I missed a perfect game. I was only two, I wouldn't have remembered, but my father never let it go. Every time there is a near perfect game he can't stand to watch it, until Felix Hernandez pitched one on my birthday.

I was at this game, sitting by the left field foul pole. I hung a Yogi Bear sign on the facing of the upper deck for each strikeout. It was awesome.

I was at this game with my now-wife and a couple of friends (upper deck, third base side). Honest, no joke, no magic dragons involved. THE most tense game I have ever been too. Crazy stuff. Still can't believe I was there. =)
