ive been inside an IDI 7.3L NA and turbo and the internals are in fact different. When you fired up that turbo IDI i knew instantly the head gaskets weren't blow. My father bough an 89 F350 cab and chassis with a cracked block and the only 7.3L he found was from a 93 IDI turbo. Come to find out both headgaskets were blown and having no way to check compression assumed the rings were good. After firing up again and finding out she blew more smoke than the camel that huffed em, 5 out of 8 cylinders had all the upper compression rings still intact. actually converted it over to non turbo due to cab clearances and it ran great but smoked like a steam train when cold. Cant wait to see this one catch some bias plys on fire.
I'd picked up a 93 Turbo IDI a couple years ago for my 1990 CCLB. Never was able to get the swap done, sold the truck but still have the turbo engine waiting to drop into something.
i must be one of the last 94's with a straight NA idi 7.3 . spent better part of a day searching online about oil pan leak and got no ware, just a bunch of powerstroke response@@deeznuts-ph5tp
Definitely upgrade the down pipe. Those stock down pipes suck. I've also seen people get high 20 psi of boost out of them. A high hp idi build would be minty
I highly recommend glow plugs, coolant temperature sensors, duel exhaust, additionally if your truck has AC then install the AC compressor because a functional AC system helps greatly with the defrosters/defoggers and besides it sucks to sweat especially if you are a Frostback from Canuckeystan. I personally don’t recommend forking with the turbo or waste-gate unless you are going to upgrade it which generally requires other upgrades but a tuner module can make a world of difference and of course egr delete.
I would put in an electric fuel pump that way you don't have to worry about it being primed. I would also get rid of the solid state glow plug relay because they are not reliable and wire the relay for push button. I would also modify some AC Delco 60G glow plugs and get rid of the problem of burning out glow plugs because they are 12 volt constant duty glow plugs not 6 volt intermittent duty glow plugs being fed 12 volts to get them hot faster.
There are aot of parts on that crappy half truck that look better than the '97 F250 HD I drive around 😂🤣 I wasn't blessed with a Diesel, just a 351w, she is a ZF-5 S47 though so, it doesn't have enough power to ever break it. Just reg cab long box XL 2wd 231k miles. Paid $2300 for it on April Fool's Day 2021 with 212k miles. Did a lot of work on it most of Nov, it towed empty to TX and back with my 2004 GTO out of storage along with a couple thousands lbs of parts and tools. Performed pretty well in the mountains in TN/AL. Probably got 10mpg. I honestly expected it to give me problems and prepared for roadside repairs. Thankfully the truck and the weather cooperated and we got back without trouble. Tires are so expensive anymore I tried something a little crazy, bought 5 Goodyear Endurance ST255/85r16s off evilbay for $70 each shipped with full tread and ran them. Everyone said they'd be terrible, they are working great. USA made, radial and way the hell better than the bulged dry rotted china trash that was on it.

Those Turbo blocks have better internals, maybe take her up to a GT35/45 or HX35/45, run an electronic waste gate to give you the ability to program your boost curves and time at boost, maybe look into supplementary natural gas if it's cheaper up there to reduce diesel consumption 30% or so along with diluting home heating oil with used trans and engine oil she'll be a budget traveller.
Nope...have one...computer controlled nightmare...heui system hard to start and smokes too much...requires pcm to run and they are getting hard to find

from playing with idis the manual fan is better than electric and also performance mods is turn up injector pump and head studs then you can hold 20psi boost easy
