On this Episode of Tow Rig Tech we are upgrading the Injectors on our 300k mile 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel powered Super Duty. We went with stage 1.5 380hp single shot injectors from Full Force Diesel. While we are in there we went ahead and replaced the glow plugs as well as the under cover harnesses and head gaskets. The injector removal and install might seem like a massive undertaking but after watching this how to video you should be able to do the task in a weekend with normal hand tools. We also discuss the infamous 50 cent mod and when you should or shouldn't do it. Then we get to the fun part with some Burnouts and Full Throttle Launch modes on the Race Tune so you can see the results. Going from the stock 250hp to 380 can really wake up an 15 year old truck! So now that the 7.3 powerstroke injector upgrade is complete. What should we do next? Maybe upgrade the Transmission?

True but a seasoned mechanic would know to clean off that cover(air compressor) and surrounding before even thinking about taking it off. I watch ya tap the cover on its way out and dirt dropping off 😂 experience for noobs is expensive. None the less still cheaper to do it twice then taking it to a shop

Just a tip for anyone changing the injectors, after you pull the glow plugs and get the oil out of the cylinders, hook up the batteries and leave the main engine harness disconnected. With the key crank the motor over 3 times for 15 seconds. Then replace your glow plugs and put it all back together and the truck should crank up within 15 seconds of cranking (1st try). Doing this method allows to engine to spin over very fast with no resistance, this helps you not wear down your batteries so fast and build oil pressure.

So I'm confused on why oil in the combustion chamber will run the engine??
@originaldylanbaxter
@originaldylanbaxter 5 лет назад
@@bobiker9285 Its called compression ignition. Diesels can combust much thicker and less volatile fuels than spark ignition systems.
@originaldylanbaxter
@originaldylanbaxter 5 лет назад
Lol, wait, did you mean RUIN? That's called hydro-locking -- you have fluid trapped within the combustion chamber and force the engine to turn over, the pressure has to go somewhere. Too much fluid and too much cranking power can be mayhem on your con-rods..

This is a great introduction for the DIY crew so they won’t be so intimidated. Since you were there and changed everything, it would have been prudent to remove and reinstall new cups with that type of mileage. I did mine and they all looked good until I removed them and 3 had small fractures in my cups. Just an FYI for your peeps, don’t buy the super cheap removal/install tool if you are going to change them. It will bite you in the ass! BTW, really great explanations during the entire job!!

I always drain the oil in the rail in the head and as well as the fuel so it doesn't drain in the cylinders. One small plug on the front of each head that's uses a 1/4in ratchet and the oil plug os a 1/2in ratchet. we have see so many ppl where I work lock there motor up cause of all the oil and fuel that drained in there from doing injectors. And you can't turn it over with the injectors out cause it'll dump more fuel and oil out. If you have them in and pull the glow plugs out just stand back and watch oil and fuel go everywhere. Just saying that would be the correct way of doing injectors and not worrying about all the oil and fuel down in the cylinders.
@BustedKnuckleVideo
@BustedKnuckleVideo 7 лет назад
I was told to do it this way by the mechanic at Full Force. We put the valve covers back on so they didn't spray oil everywhere. It worked great.
@mikeb0261
@mikeb0261 7 лет назад
BustedKnuckleVideo I mean that's ok to do but working on diesels my whole life and ASE certified and from ford, chevy, dodge as well as international, Detroit, Cat..ect.. like I said it's ok the way you did that but there is always a high chance of hydro locking the motor. we get it all the time at the shop where they don't properly drain oil and fuel from the rails. Diesel's have a higher compression ratio and if it can't push what's in the cylinders out of a tiny hole then you cause more damage then good. Glade it worked and I do enjoy watching yalls videos, I was just concerned about the way you were doing it.
@CumminsDriver
@CumminsDriver 7 лет назад
I dont think there is much chance of hydro locking an engine with the glow plugs out turning it over with a ratchet...
@BustedKnuckleVideo
@BustedKnuckleVideo 7 лет назад
Definitely a good tip. I was concerned with the way we were told to evacuate the cylinders but it seemed to work. A little bit of white smoke at startup but that was it.

to avoid excessive cranking on first start, i fill fuel filter crank for 5-10 seconds repeat on 3rd or 4th it starts right up. I figured this out working on a boat (48') and did that from then on with my 6.9 and later 7.3 and its always worked very well. Always worried about cost of starters, this procedure is like a Xanax, no more starter worries...PS I use a quart lower unit lube filler or quart 90# with squirt tube screwed on to refill filter.

@Chris123NT
@Chris123NT 7 лет назад
Just a tip, but pulling out the 2 allen head plugs in the high pressure oil rail BEFORE removing the injectors will result in a lot less oil dropping into the cylinders. I noticed you guys didn't mention that step, but it's a good one to avoid a possible hydro lock, and actually eliminates the requirement to remove the glow plugs if you also drain the fuel bowl before starting the job.

Really if it's a "tow rig" you should go with a dully, you will always be limited with that single rear wheel as to how much you can tow and well the ride is much better without nearly as much sway leaving you able to actually use that extra pony power to pud on a bit faster.

@PatrickBaptist

They do have some good points, the SRW I mean, easier to park and not as wide in the lanes/parking spots. Tire changes are less to boot. With what all I wind up towing the SRW isn't for me. Take it easy!
@jolness1
@jolness1 5 лет назад
They also suck on rutted roads (snow or dirt), and cost more for tires. If you have to haul that heavy, I get it and I love the way they look but not everyone needs one. Also the gear ratios are so damn high especially with these old 4 speeds.

instead of cranking the motor over to purge the air out of the fuel lines "turn the key on for a few seconds and if you get out quick and listen under the hood you'll hear the fuel being circulated through the fuel filter..turn the key off and then on again about 4 times and the truck should start right up without all that cranking...good luck! awsome video!

I'm new to diesels so I'm no expert but I know with gas engines your worst enemy is FM in the motor. I think you really ought to clean the engine bay before opening up the valve train and potentially knocking tiny bits of dirt all over your heads.

It was a good video though he didn't include telling you to crank it with GPs out to get the oil out of the cylinders which can cause a hydro lock, good way to ruin a engine.
@_milo590
@_milo590 5 лет назад
When I do anything fuel related on a diesel, I prime the lines by cycling the ignition 5-10 times full cycle before starting, usually eliminates most of the cranking unless you have some air intrusion
@jolness1

Works on a superduty but not the OBS I have. Also a lot of the issue is priming the oil rails more than the fuel rails.

I did some baby swamps 150cc injectors on my old 97 7.3 with 325k miles on it with a TS Performance 6 position chip with a wicked wheel 2 intake wheel and changed the downpipe to a true 4" inch downpipe. Talk about a wake up call from stock lol. I used a syringe with a long hose and just sucked all of the fluids out of each cylinder and i noticed you never mentioned that you need to follow the cylinder number specified for each injector according to your programmed chip.

i know this is a old video but a friend of mine sent me this video and asked if he followed this would he be ok. As a former ford tech and still currently a diesel mechanic for a fleet, the only thing i have to say is dont just turn over the crank by hand. Everything else seems good, but if you only turn over by hand because of the pistons shape bowl design you have not evacuated the cylinders completely of fuel/oil and due to the high compression have a likely hood of detonation which could cause rod bending or piston/ring damage. the preferred method would be a vac pump thought the glow plug holes to suck out all fluids out of each cylinder. or at least like i recommended to my friend leave the glow plugs out. put the valve covers back on loosely, unplug your valve cover harnesses on both banks so the injectors will not have power and the engine will not start. crank the truck it will free spin faster then normal because no cylinders have compression but will blow the majority of fluid out of the piston bowls and eliminate any possible hydro lock conditions that could be present if you didn't. Sry dont mean to preach but just a PSA for anyone doing this in the future dont want to see an otherwise good engine ruined because steps where missed.
@johnt2k7
@johnt2k7 4 года назад
just to explain better when you pull a injector out all the fuel and oil from the HEUI system trapped in the heads goes down into that cylinder. say your only changing one injector because of a coil issue/maintenance if its number 1 or 2 not as much of a concern because the rake of the engine, but say you are only pulling number 7 or 8 at the back of the engine. all the oil and fuel from that cylinder head has just gone down into and filled that single cylinder and even if you crank over by hand the entire bowl of the piston and chamber volume are still filled with fuel/oil and is a bent rod, or piston/ring damage waiting to happen if you only turned over by hand.

Thanks for the video. It's very informative. At 11:10, why do you have to put the valve cover back on if all you'll be doing is turning the motor by hand? The oil won't squirt out that rapidly when turning the motor by hand, right?

I'm not much of a mechanic, so i have a questions. I'm all about increasing power on the 7.3 I just bought, but my biggest priority is longevity of the engine. A lot of power upgrades just put more stress on the engine and part of the reason the 7.3's last so long is that they are pretty under-stressed machines. Will putting new injectors in add much more stress to the engine?
@BustedKnuckleVideo

GREAT VIDEOS YOU HAVE.....QUESTION I have a 01 f350 7.3 and having lots of problems. It was running poorly and replaced the wiring and gaskets on valvecovers.That helped.Then it died again and replaced icp new wires ipr and new wires,cam sensor.new o-rings in the HPOP and then found out it was the IDM .ATLEAST I HAVE SPARES IN GLOVEBOX NOW LOL I got it to run after that and it has no power at all and the check engine lite comes on when driving. I unplugged the icp while running and my truck just dies and will not start at all with it unplugged? I went to the store this week and it stalled and wont run at all now. I think i must need new o-rings in a few of the injectors.i will try this cause im disabled and dont have $ for the injector upgrade like you or any new injectors for that matter lol.....Just wonder if i have a bad ECU on top of it all????? let me know what you guys think cause AND WHY IT WONT RUN WITH THE ICP UNPLUGGED any info will help me big time.THANKS EVERYONE FOR ANY COMMENTS.....

Both truck are nearing the 400K mark and should be getting these updated parts anyways as u suggested. Thanks again.
