Here’s a timeline that documented my rebuild process on the Highboy, start to driving it took 6 months. Since then I have been replacing things as needed. This video goes in-depth on what is needed to swap an idi diesel into a dentside Ford.

How difficult was the wiring to do? I have a chassi from an obs with full drive train and zf ready to drop my old 7.3 idi into. I have a line on a good body from a 70’s f250 and I was going to put the body on the newer chassis. My only worry was the wiring.
@Andrewj2152
@Andrewj2152 6 месяцев назад
The wiring to make the motor work was super easy. Like 5ish wires you only need power to the glow plugs, injection pump, and key on power to the alternator to make everything work. I used the stock 73 wiring harness to control the entire truck, I just added those wires to run the motor. No complaints on any of it. So in your case I’d try to retain the 70s f250 wiring and make it work on the obs idi motor. Basically what I did. I ran my glow plugs to a switch, and my cold timing advance to a switch as well. I tied my injection pump to a wire that had key on power and cranking power, I ran the wire for the starter off of the old starter solenoid to trigger the Idi starter solenoid, and a key on power for the alternator to know when to charge. And a few random ground wires are needed. Very easy. For the brake lights you can probably splice into the obs wiring harness to make them work

What about that oil pressure mine drops to 25 at lowest after it’s up to temp
@Andrewj2152
@Andrewj2152 Год назад
What about it? I think mine goes to around 15-20 when it’s warm. But I think it’s a slightly lower reading than it really is. I think the gauge is not the best, and i am getting it from the top of the turbo area.
@MatthewG_208

Does the 7.3 idi have less wiring to mess with than the 7.3 power stroke? Bad ass truck man I would like to one day do this to my 74 f350.

What gear ratio you running?
@Andrewj2152
@Andrewj2152 Год назад
At the time of the video, it had 4.10s. Earlier this year I swapped in superduty axles from a 2006 which have 3.73 gear ratios. With this motor and tall tires I prefer the 4.10s

I wouldn't say this video goes in depth, as it's just a bunch of disjointed clips of random stuff. Regardless, an FE shits on an IDI
@Andrewj2152
@Andrewj2152 Год назад
When I recorded these clips I didn’t plan on turning them into a video. Check out the other video of it titled 1973 7.3 L review, it goes more in depth. The 7.3 idi turbo is way better than the old 360 fe. 20mpg on diesel is better than 8mpg on gas, more power, more reliable

What did you use for frame stands to attach the mounts to?
@Andrewj2152
@Andrewj2152 Год назад
Around 4:13 in the video you can get a good look at them. I basically used the stock fe mount towers and cut the tops off at an angle, then I welded the 7.3 idi mount plates to them. To do that I had the mount plates bolted to the motor, and I held it roughly about where it is and slowly took material off until it got where I liked it.

@Andrewj2152
@Andrewj2152 Год назад
It fit the existing radiator support. No modifications necessary! My only complaint so far is it is not adequate still for my diesel motor. But this radiator will work just fine on a gas motor. I’ve found out that stock 91 f350s with the 7.3 idi hold 8gallons of coolant, I’ve got a capacity of around 6 gallons

@@Andrewj2152 good to know, thanks. I have a 76 highboy that I'd like to put an IDI in and I'm just trying to decide whether to do an engine/trans swap into my truck or do a dentside body swap onto an IDI frame.
@Andrewj2152
@Andrewj2152 Год назад
I’m very happy with my swap, basically nothing on my truck is original. If you have noticed I now have superduty axles under my truck. There is not much left that I want to do to the truck, I would like to put in a new windshield, probably a large aero tank under the bed, and fix the cooling problems.
