Fun note about Castle Crashers, Had a Demo that was just that first level at the end you fought that slightly larger barbarian as a boss so it was partially a gag thrown in to swerve people who'd played the Demo that were expecting to fight him again in the main game but no, squish, a really large Barbarian.
On Xbox 360 the demo actually allowed you to fight the barbarian big boss with the small one just getting squished however the fight cut midway through for the demo's end when one of those weird black furred guy turns off the light.
I'll be honest,i half expected the final boss to be stolen from me again, even if said boss was a fucking gimmicky pain in the ass. Then i fought him, and saw what happened afterwards...

I love the confident look in Starkiller when seeing the Rancor. It's like "Man, i killed dozens of these things in Felucia". And then the Rancor is instantly crushed And he's like Man, I need my other light saber.
I loved that game. Beat both Unleashed games as well as Fallen Order, but Unleashed II will remain my favorite because it was just so dang fun. The Gorog was my favorite fight and I'd constantly replay that level over and over just to fight him. There's just so many cool moments in that game that I love. Those were good times.
9:47 Honestly when I first saw Zeus bleed RED I immediately assumed that it was an imposter placed there to stall Kratos while the REAL Zeus gets ready to ambush him seeing as some myths say that the Gods bleed liquid gold.
7:40 in lore, Rancors were able to establish tight bonds with their owners. This lore has existed since before the prequels, and thus when boba got a rancor many people already guessed that boba would end up riding it.
I mean, the show basically tells viewers right away that he will ride it at some point, also the lore is from the old EU, so not canon until Book of Boba Fett made it
@@JachAnen it's made by dave filloni. All his shit is heavily inspired by eu. That's because of the rule of 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'. That's probably why the sequel trilogy failed, because almost everything it tried 'different', failed miserably. And with different I mainly mean part 8.
@@Olav_Hansen I know, Dave have integrated a lot of the EU into canon. But a lot of people made a lot of stuff in the old EU, a lot was bad, only a few things are well known from it. So even though Filoni does add a lot of the EU stuff, I don't think he really goes out of his way to add it, so there's still a lot that will likely never become canon. All that tells me that very few would have immediately guessed Boba would be riding a rancor, with the short time they had to even think of it before Danny Trejo basically tell the viewers it will happen, and even those who did guess were really just guessing, 50/50 chance Filoni chose to add it or even thought of it, as there's a lot of stuff in the EU, he might not know it all and highly likely doesn't remember all of it.
@@NevTheDeranged What's wild is a lot of the pop culture references ended up being fairly timeless due to the subjects being all time classics. A topical game like this usually doesn't do well out of its time period but I think Conker is an exception, for sure.

To be fair, rancors were clearly pets with emotional connections from the very beginning. The rancor-keeper runs in after Luke defeats it and sobs. Also, Starkiller is unimpressed because he already killed dozens of the things in the previous game, so it's not like you're missing out on badass rancor battles.
That and it isn't superrrr uncommon for there to be tamed Rancors for the sake of being pets, circus beasts, trade beasts, guard animals, or mounts. So while Boba Fett having one isn't super amazing, it still is pretty neat to see him on one
Is it just me or does everyone unreasonably hate the Boba Fett show? I loved it, thought it was awesome. It seems to be one of those things wot it's fashionable to dislike.

@@Torthrodhel it was okay, but it did no justice for the character. Boba Fett used to be a cool and mysterious bounty hunter that wouldn't take off his helmet and say one liners in an intimidating voice. Basically the evil version of Han Solo. Although the Sarlacc escape was pretty cool, the show didn't give us nearly enough high stakes action scenes. Boba Fett became an old politician while he left Fennec Shand to do most of the heavy lifting when it came to the fighting department. Plus the return of so many Mandalorian characters was so unnecessary you'd think you're watching The Mandalorian season 2.5 especially considering there's even an entire episode and many scenes dedicated to what he did after he gave Grogu to Luke Skywalker. I was okay with the Tusken backstory and Rancor taming, but we needed an action packed show of Fett doing what a Fett does best. Not a past-his-prime old man (who shouldn't even be that old or weak because this happened literally only 5 years after his "death" in Episode VI) who decides to become a politician spending half the show in a bacta tank. And it especially shouldn't provide extra plot on Mando and Co when it isn't his show. Had potential but ultimately wasted it. A solid 6/10. I know this is long but I hope this clears things up for you.
I remember how much I was told by Star Wars fans that the Rancor keeper cried when it was killed, showing that it was a loyal beast rather than a nasty monster. Appearances can be deceiving, dude.
also like in the previous game we end up killing like 10 of them as star killer so if one apprance of it not being all scary is all it takes to "take away nice things" we have long past that. also also. The one bobba rides freaking kicked ass.

7:48 Actually Rancors are surprisingly docile and are only dangerous when provoked, most of the monstrous rancors we see in star wars have usually been starved or tortured.

Surprised Tiso from Hollow Knight wasn't mentioned, in the base game you've seen Tiso as a side character built up throughout the campaign before finding him to have died offscreen. Then in the godmaster DLC we find him in the godmaster arena rallying a battlecry, just as your excitement reaches its climax as you get ready to finally fight him, he gets killed by a Mawlek, the actual boss of that arena.
He has a name, you know. It's Henry Cooldown, formerly Henry Touchdown, more commonly known as Mister Sir Henry Motherfucker. who happen's to be your twin brother! Also, he doesn't die in nmh1, showing up in every game from desperate struggle all the way up to nmh3, making it so that jane's closing comment doesn't apply to him
Technically speaking, this is ineligible because he's not "immediately" kllled, but honourable mention should go to Sigma from Mega Man X8. Yes, you fight Sigma in a straight forward fight, but seeing the big bad of the series get taken out by Lumine and take control of the Sigma virus which had been a threat to reploid-kind for so long is definitely an awesome moment.
Giving you something you either think or once thought was terrifying, and then watching something immediately destroy this powerful thing, makes it clear what you’re fighting is more powerful, and is a good way to terrify you of this new battle

Andy, anyone who knows Star Wars will know that Rancors are like dogs, they can be vicious attack beasts or loyal pets depending on how they are trained and treated. In EU lore the Nighsisters of Dathomir rode them around like horses
I had this exact thought. I suppose their obvious lack of knowledge about Star Wars might explain, at least partially, why they all keep shitting on some of the best Star Wars content ever made. Either that or they're all just a bunch of Star Wars haters pretending to be fans in an attempt to not alienate almost the entire geek community?
That, and the story of Jabba's Rancor and his trainer Malakili from the Tales of Jabba's Palace anthology sure is one of the most heartwarming and wholesome tales in the Legends continuity too... they even planned to escape the clutches of Jabba later on. And then Heroes of Yavin showed up to change all that... and I actually cheered for the Rancor's death when I was a kid who first watched Ep. VI.
Actually, it was the Witches of Dathomir (Light Side Force-users) that rode the rancors. Dathomiri rancors were actually very intelligent (no offense to dogs, whom I love), and viewed the Nightsisters as a threat.
The Destiny 2 Spire of Stars Raid Boss Fight was also in tune of this! The Final Boss killing the Boss we thought we were fighting is the best part of the Raid for me!
Tiso from Hollow Knight! He shows up throughout your journey, seemingly foreshadowing a boss battle with him later in the story. And then he finally shows up in Godhome, spinning his shield menacingly, challenging us to a fight... Only to get crushed by the mawlek that lands on top of him :P
I REALLY wanted to fight Flyboy, too. Something about enduring a kitted-out buzzard absolutely built with all sorts of utilities and firepower as you seek shelter and mow down mobs across the arena sounds awesome
For the Aria of Sorrow one, it also happens in another Castlevania game: Harmony of Dissonance, which release one year earlier. In it, a giant suit of armor called Talos chases you at the beginning of the game. Later, you enter a boss room and a suit of Living Armor approaches you... only to immediately be killed by the Talos. It probably doesn't really count since you fight a Living Armor early on in the game, and the only thing that makes this one different is it's holding a different sword.
In Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, for the Water type trial it seems as though the boss you'll be facing is a fairly scary Totem Wishiwashi, which makes sense, as that's what you faced in the original Sun and Moon. However, it then disperses after being attacked by another Pokemon, Araquanid, which is the actual boss of the area.

Nergigante coming back from the dead and body slamming the shit out of Shara Ishvalda by breaking and tearing her neck open at the end of Monster Hunter World Iceborne will forever be one of the hypest things to ever happen in both that series and gaming in general.
Maybe you guys can do a list of best secret/true villains in games? It'd be a list of games where you think you take out the big bad, only to later find out someone else was behind them the whole time, and it's really well done. One entry on this list would definitely be Darkrai in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers games
4:23: One thing I will say, Akuma's Shun Goku Satsu (Raging Demon) move doesn't just leave Bison for dead, he full on kills him with it, as that move is deadly to almost anyone hit with it. Also that move is more painful to the victim the more evil they are, so safe to say Bison had a bad day there.
The Balrog confused me when I first played FU2, because a Rancor came out. Then it terrified me with the size of it, then I realized it was a massive pushover.
Oh my god, they abbreviate to FU and FU2.... Well... at least the cut down PS2 version of The Force Unleashed was good. It had a little more in it, it controlled way better, and Starkiller wasn't holding his lightsaber backwards like a fucking choad.
This made me immediately think of Tonberry completely owning one of the optional bosses in FF13 (Zenobia). COMPLETELY was not expecting it when I played it and instantly had a panic attack as I was not prepared for a Tonberry

The introduction to Balore in Aria of Sorrow blew my mind back then, I was genuinely expecting to fight the Giant Bat and then he gets crushed by his giant hand and it's honestly pretty impactful, Aria of Sorrow has become one of my favorite Castlevanias.
I feel like Zenobia, The Butcher from Final Fantasy XIII deserves a spot. She is cast as a violent, undying monster that curses the land and gods alike, then gets one shot by a Tonberry.
In Super Kirby Clash we have Parallel Nightmare being killed by Galacta Knight, who he had just summoned. And in Star Allies and Forgotten Land, we see Galacta Knight and Soul Forgo respectively being absorbed by an orange butterfly, which turns into one of the hardest bosses in both games
As a kid, I never thought anyone could actually beat the gorog till Starkiller massacred him slowly. The behemoth used to terrify me. Now I just think he’s a badass giant monster that is sorely underrated.
How about the boss so scary the first boss peed their pants when they realized he was there? Jedi Fallen Order has your primary antagonist easily killed as Darth Vader comes up, throws your mentor off a cliff, and your _only_ option is to run for your life.

In Metal Slug X, when you finally arrive at the end of the Final Mission, the enemy general is right there on his vehicle waiting for you... Then a UFO comes down, zaps him and then proceeds to try and zap you. And of course, when you defeat the UFO, an even larger UFO comes down for the final FINAL battle.
You forgot the Arkham series: Asylum makes you think you're going to fight Jonathan Crane (aka Scarecrow), only for him to get nommed by Waylon Jones (Killer Croc). Then, in City, you think you're going to fight The Joker, who turns out to be Clayface. As well as your fight with Oswald Cobblepot being interrupted by Solomon Grundy.
Re: Castlevania Aria of Sorrow Swarm of Bat: my understanding as to part of why this sudden Balore bat-squish-boss-switch worked so well was because of how so many of the previous Castlevania games had some giant bat (that were sometimes made up of many smaller bats) as a boss somewhere in the game. I played the games generally in order, and so when in Aria of Sorrow the swarm of bats became the big bat, I immediately thought (with, I admit, almost an eyeroll) “aaaaand here is the requisite Castlevania boss giant-bat-made-up-of-smaller ba-“ *SQUISH* 0.0 “…oh well DONE, Aria of Sorrow.”
Definitely playing with player expectations there. The giant bat is the most overused boss in the series besides Dracula and Death, and unlike them is rather lame by now. It's also a good subversion how the Darkwing Bat begins with Aria of Sorrow's regular boss theme starting up, but when Balore suddenly crushes it the new, more threatening 2nd boss theme takes over for the very first time in the game.
Here's one from Final Fantasy XII. One of the big bosses in the deadly Necrohol of Nabudis appears to be a dangerous muscle-bound Catoblepas. It's one-hit killed by a small purple bunny named Fury.
Not that I seriously thought I'd be fighting a fat official as a boss in Demon's Souls, but when he gets impaled by the Penetrator, I was pretty intimidated.
I’m surprised there’s no Galacta Knight or Morpho Knight. In Robobot and Super Kirby Clash, Galacta Knight literally one-shots Star Dream and Parallel Nightmare before you fight him. Then in Star Allies and Forgotten Land, before you get the chance to fight Galacta Knight and Soul Forgo, the butterfly flies in and flat-out absorbs them, becoming Morpho Knight.
To be fair on the Star Dream occassion, that wasn't a surprise. Star Dream summoned Galacta on purpose. Getting attacked was not part of the plan. Morpho, though, it definitely applies. Float like a butterfly, inflict horrors beyond comprehension also like a butterfly.
MADNESS: Project Nexus lives up to it's name. In the final story mission, aptly titled "The Rush", it's nearly nothing but bosses. At the climax, the Gunner Twins, who picked fights with two of the protagonists THREE GODDAMN TIMES, show up yet again... only to be promptly eaten by the boss that had been chasing the other two.
Final Fantasy XII: Giant Behemoth-type boss, who seconds after being revealed is killed by the real boss, Fury, which appears to be a small, gray dreamhare type enemy.
My favourite is when plankton introduced his fighter who is so terrible and mindbendingly large but it turns he was just carrying the true contestant...

No mention for Zenobia the Butcher in Final Fantasy 13? Yeah you get to fight her in 13-2, but in the original she gets shanked in the ankle by a Tonberry and immediately dies in one hit. Another occurrence happens with Jihl Nabaat when Dysley just deletes her before fighting you himself.
To be fair to *everyone* Tonberries whole gimmick is having attack dealing damage based on the number of enemies you've killed or an attack dealing damaged based on the number of steps you've taken OR having both abilities that they can just decide on at random, depending on the game. Adorable little grudge-holding TPK machines, Tonberries.
Respect to the Final Fantasy XIII commenters. I forgot about that Tonberry. My mind immediately went to the Istory Falls boss that got rinsed by Leviathan in FFV.
Final Fantasy XIII had this in one of it hunts, but the terror only kicks in if you are a veteran of the series. Going on the hunt: 34 - Zenobia, The Butcher, a cutscene starts where the boss emerges, then a Tonberry, the first in this game, shows up and shanks the boss dead to take its place. For a newbie to the series this is, okay, smaller boss not a big deal, while series regulars are going "oh shit, oh shit"
A sort of tweak to this happens in Devil May Cry 3. The first boss of the game loses to Dante but escapes only to be instantly killed by Vergil and make you dread his boss fight. It happens again later with Beowulf escaping Dante's fight only to be beheaded and his soul taken by Virgil, making him stronger then last fight.
I can't believe you didn't mention the Tonberry from FFXIII that snipes your hunt bounty. When it suddenly appeared and killed the monster I was supposed to be fighting, that may be the most scared I've been in a video game.
In the tie-in the Force Unlesshed 2 comic, the Gorog actually survived the fall. While tracking Starkiller, Boba Fett finds the Gorog and is the one that permanently puts it down.
To be fair, there were at least three different Rancor fights in The Force Unleashed 1, so fighting another one in Force Unleashed 2 would've been a bit of a letdown. Also, I'm surprised you didn't mention that Jeane is Travis' half-sister, and that Henry is his twin brother, or that bit in No More Heroes 2, where you think your entering a battle royale, but then the actual boss kills everyone else in one shot

I remember in Dynamite Heady when you face the first keymaster boss. In stage 2-3 you think you’re about to face recurring boss Trouble Bruin before he’s crushed by the actual boss Mad Dog.
I'm surprised final fantasy xiii on here, there's a Cie'th Stone mission where the party is supposed to fight a hard as nails Cie'th, but a Tonberry comes in and stabs it in the ankle, and the fight the harder than nails "I eat nails for breakfast" Tonberry.
Tiso from Hollow Knight also works for this! Tiso was a neat NPC with a shield as a weapon. You might even want to fight him! But don’t get your hopes up because when you meet him in Godhome, he’s given a mock boss title before being crushed by a Brooding Mawlek.
Recent Guardians of the Galaxy had something like this. At the end of the first chapter, you think you'll have a boss fight agaist a massive monster, but it gets wiped out by a mysterious entity that StarLord accidentally released earlier.
Ff had a couple but the one that sticks for me is Biggs and wedge getting replaced by Elvoret in ff8 during the seed exam. Really the seed exam deserves its own video so many tropes.
You know, I watched this half expecting Tiso from Hollow Knight to show up. In the Pantheon he shows up, shouts a war cry while his name appears and the screen shakes like every other boss fight in the game… Then is immediately squished under the rear of a Brooding Mawlek.
What about Tiso from Hollow Knight? He gets squished by the brooding mollusk as soon as you see him, and we never got to find out what his shield does…
ffxiii, in the cie'th stone mission 34. one of final fantasy's most feared enemy kills the main objective and you fight him instead. the dreaded Tonberry. not bigger... but definitely scarier
You sort of get this from Warframe after the Corpus tileset rework. Every was familiar with the Venus boss at Fossa called the Jackal, a big quadrupedal robot. After the rework the cutscene revealed this tiny bipedal robot smaller than you. First reaction is, "That's... the Jackal now? What?" Even the Lotus comments that she thought it was bigger. Then the little tiny robot is crushed as the actual Jackal slams down from the ceiling and the boss fight begins.
The Contra series has quite a few examples of this. Shattered Soldier had Mr. Heli-Robo appear in the end of the first level, only for Slave Beast Taka to fall on him and crush him. You still end up fighting Mr. Heli-Robo later in the game anyway. Neo Contra has sort of an subversion of this trope - Plant Contra, the presumed boss of stage 2 gets gunned by Mystery G, who you then have to fight. However, after this fight it turns out Plant Contra is still alive and supremely pissed off, and then you have to fight him anyway. The series probably has more examples of this, but I can't seem recall them right now.
Tiso from Hollow Knight. In the boss rush mode, a lot of NPCs became boss fights. It was cool to see that Tiso got the same treatment.... Until a Brooding Mawlik came in and crushed him
The line about the punisher bumper stickers was especially hilarious since I watched this at the airport sitting next to a guy with a big American flag punisher patch safety pinned to his backpack.
The penetrator entrance just locks terror in your mind, then after the boss fight starts you realise you were right about the fear, he is fast, hits Like a truck and has devastating comboes
just want to point out taht in other legends material Rancors are considered inteligent and very emotional creatures, they used to be rided by the night sisters and they used to create a strong emotional bond between them, which is actually refferenced in the book of boba fett, so that's back to the canon

You think he'll jump in as the boss in the second tier trial; you are expecting him to show up. Then Brooding Mawlek comes in instead. But then you see him jump in at a Godhome challenge- ohp it's Brooding Mawlek again.
Yes and no You find Tiso throughout Hallownest where he speaks of this glorious arena (the Colosseum), then if you saved Zote twice you find Zote in the resting area of the Colosseum, then you fight Zote as the final boss of the first challenge tier. Then you find Tiso there, so the player gets the idea that Tiso would be the final boss of the second tier challenge, but it turns out that he was not Then the player can see his body falling in the area before the Colosseum If the player goes to the Godhome DLC, one of the boss rush challenges has Tiso as the boss on-screen, so the player thinks "Finally I can fight Tiso" just for the Brooding Mawlek to fall from the sky and crush Tiso This would make it a double fake out

He never shows up in a Colosseum fight You see him resting in the Colosseum and after interacting with him and winning or failing a Colosseum run you see his body fall down outside the Colosseum Then im Godhome it seems like you will fight him for the Mawlet to crush him
