My favorite thing about the hollow knight fight is the music change, its all "oh here's the final boss go kill it" till it starts stabbing itself and you have this sudden swell of remorseful music as you realize this isn't a fight, its assisted suicide.

What if master kohga never remembers his mistakes because he is constantly dropping giant balls on his head.

You can't even damage Kala, the final boss of Indivisible. But she's so angry and powerful that she damages herself when she attacks you, so all you have to do is keep guarding until she kills herself. Good work, angry goddess.

I like to think that the hollow knight stabbing themself is a representation of what remains of their former self (the pure vessel) trying their hardest to help little ghost in the fight desperately trying to kill the light and infection within them like it's the only way they can fight the radiance with

Fun fact: Nakayama's jack obsession is brought back in Telltale's Tales from the Borderlands. Very very fun game - one of my favourite telltale games.

Dr. Robotnik has a pretty big track record of beating himself in Sonic games. Another example occurs in Sonic & Knuckles, where at the end of Lava Reef Zone act 2, you fight him in a mech that has spikes along the top and is immune to lava, but somehow not immune to the bombs it produces

oh, i just remembered Ozzie in Chrono Trigger! attacking him directly doesn't work at all, but attacking the switches around the room eventually drops him down a trapdoor!

Actually, the Hollow Knight's self stabbing doesn't do anything, as it's purely visual. With an enemy hp bar mod installed that directly takes the enemy health values, you find out that he actually doesn't do any damage to himself. Just wanted to point that out :)

Speaking of Dr. Robotnik, remember the end of Lava Reef, Act 2 playing as Sonic or Tails? All you have to do is avoid the lava and let his attacks hurt himself. Bonus points if you have the flame shield.

Okay so now we have to talk about the gargoyle at the start of Conker's Bad Fur Day. Guy just laughs himself to death.

If you play Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, it is implied that the reason Nakayama is so obsessed with Jack is that he had a very unhealthy crush on him before his death. So it's not just "mad scientist admiring the bad guy", it's "creepy stalker tries to recreate dead love interest in increasingly messed up ways". Fun!

In Mass Effect 1, you could convince Saren to defeat himself for you with a maxed out Paragon/Renegade score and enough in the speech skill.

Peace Walker from MGS Peace Walker. PW short circuited itself in a nearby body of water to prevent a nuclear launch after Big Boss was unable to stop it. The whole moment was really tense and was just great writing by Hideo.

The way you damage Bowser in Super Mario Galaxy also essentially boils down to tricking him into ground-pounding into danger.

Granted this isn’t every time you fight him, but Little Horn from the Binding of Isaac tends to bomb himself out of existence more often than not

Purple Tentacle from Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle. Fires a shrink ray at Dr Ed, neglects to consider the reflector on his head, and subsequently shrinks himself instead...rhyme unintended.

In Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time, Pirate Captain Yosemite Sam obligingly fires his cannonballs into the greedily awaiting maws of your own cannon, before then being sunk by the said balls. Are they Sam's balls? Are they Bugs' balls? It's academic, because Sam's been forcibly relocated from Yosemite to the bottom of the ocean. 10/10 would cannon-troll again

Belcha from Donkey Kong Country 3 springs to mind. Not only does he supply you with the means with which to beat him, but he ends up defeating himself by throwing himself into a hole with the force of his own belches.

Doesn't happen too often, but Nightmare from Devil May Cry 5. If you deal enough damage to Shadow and Griffon, Nightmare will try to heal them, draining his own health in doing so, and this drains about half of what health he has left when using it.

That Black Cat character model is terrifying.

The guy who falls down the stairs is the funniest. And the Zelda boss was funny. Also Hollowknight was cinda crazy. Reminds me of the Abyss watchers from Dark souls 3.

Father Elijah from the Dead Money DLC for Fallout New Vegas, if you remain unnoticed he will enter Sinclair's vault and ends up trapped inside it and ultimately dies in there

After going on a channel binge and seeing the bosses who had to sing before this video, it reminded me of a game that got re-released on the DS back in 2008 that I find is not well known and should be called "Rapsody: A Musical Adventure" and thought a 7 games that never got the attention they deserved or something along that line.

Hollowknight is the only Boss that willing to harm himself to help you

The yeti in Spyro: ripto’s rampage (I think I spelled his name right) he literally kills himself in the cutscene that plays when we get to him by jumping a few times and causing a part of the roof above him to fall on him and crush him flatter then the floor he’s standing on. The best part is that he looks up at the last possible second making a noise that could only be described as his way of saying “What the?”

Hollow knight’s false knight should really stop hitting the ground with his weapon

Prepare to have Robotnik/Eggman appear on the list again, as in _Shadow the Hedgehog_ when you fight him whilst piloting the Egg Dealer (kinda like a mobile slot machine). All you have to do is hit the buttons on the machine, and if you play your slots right, he will attack himself.

Any fighting game where the opponent can "Ring Out". One that stands out in my mind was the final boss of Soul Calibur III's campaign mode. Crouch in the corner and she can jump right over your head and fall out of bounds.

The fact you beat Rhino twice more in the sequel game, Spiderman 2 (2004) in exact same way. I think it's good for him to have such a thick skull.

What about Maiden Astria from Demon's Soul? She basically does the same after you kill her bodyguard (Garl Vinland) saying, "she can no longer defend herself and that you can have your precious Demon's Souls" stabbing you through the 4th wall. She was in another list about bosses you were forced to kill, but in this scenario, it's the option that Luke took in his Demon's Souls playthrough streams.

I'm surprised I'm not seeing anyone mention the Red Girl from Nier Automata. You aren't suppose to fight it, but rather wait for it to multiply to a point that it begins to tear itself apart.

Can we talk about how the Master of the Yiga clan is the only clan member who cannot straight-up one-shot you?

Nostalgia kicked in when I saw the preveiw of the Rhino fight from PS1 Spiderman. That fight taught me how to fight big charging bosses in games afterwards. Thank you for including this, i was so chuffed to see it.

Minor contradiction: When the Hollow Knight is impaling itself, it causes any dealt attacks in its duration to always deal 1 damage.

Watching that health bar deplete as Nakayama fell down the stairs there... phenomenal.

Professor Nakayama is the second best quest in BL2- right after Shoot This Guy In The Face.

Even funnier, you can shoot Nakyama on his way down, killing him before he's finished. But the quest doesn't register until he's at the bottom of the stairs.

Well now I'm wondering why Bowser hasn't said "yo" since. Bring back Bowser saying "yo"! Why isn't that in Odyssey... lol.

The Kayren in Witcher Two. Sure, you lop off its tentacles, but it does most of the damage by thrashing around and collapsing a bridge on itself.

Sirrus and Achenar from Myst. They give you the information you needed to free their father, who ends up eliminating any chances of escape they had. They seemed to seriously think that telling you about the fireplace pages and the green book only after you inevitably discover their crimes was a good idea.

I remember doing the jinroku quest in ghost of tsushima. I would recommend the black and white style. I loved it

How about the Ceaseless Discharge?! Very large epic scale boss and he can literally take a few steps to the right and die. Sad backstory too

If we count bosses breaking the floor underneath themselves then False Knight from Hollow Knight works as well.

From a game standpoint, the Hollow Knight stabbing itself is it's attempt to kill itself, though it doesn't actually do damage, nor can you really do much as your attack goes down to 1 while the stabbing happens.

How about Twinrova from Ocarina of Time? The two witches essentially beat themselves with their own fire/ice magic.

Man that 2000 Black Cat was ripped.

I'm surprised you forgot about Hotline Miami. The final boss of Jacket's portion pretty much finishes your job for you after you take out his henchmen after you take out his pets and bodyguard.

Nakayama's death actually made me uncomfortable. Idk why it hit me like that, but there are people who have died that way, and that just kind of bummed me out when it happened.

So, there are 3 bosses in Final Fantasy 4 that kill themselves for you. I mean, technically there are more if you have the right set-ups, but these three can be done pretty easily: 1. Kaipo Inn Guards - The "second" boss encounter in the game, when Cecil protects Rydia. Killing the Officer first causes the remaining guards to attack themselves in the confusion, ending the fight. Considered keeping off the list, but it can be done. 2. Dark Knight fight - When Cecil first becomes a Paladin, he must fight his "dark knight past," which is really just a mirror match with his old job. All you have to do is sit there and take hits, swinging at him actually lengthens the fight. You're greeted with a short monologue that ends all of Cecil's character development. 3. King and Queen Eblan - Edge's parents were subjected to experiments, turning them into monsters. You don't actually have to do anything in this fight; the two throw a couple underpowered spells your way, but then "snap out of it" and end the fight. No experience from this fight, even.

You left out the most iconic self defeating boss. The first titan boss in Batman: Arkham Asylum dies from a heart attack after trying to kill you for a minute

I got an idea, 7 games so good that the awful plot didn't matter.

Crash 2. Tiny Tiger Jumps into a dark pit all by himself.

Technically, Yu Yevon from Final Fantasy X qualifies- his "Gravija" spell hits everyone in the battle, INCLUDING HIMSELF. Don't even HAVE to cheese him with a Zombie Attack into Phoenix Down combo!

The worst part of The Hollow Knight's fight? You have to watch as your sibling, maybe even twin, repeatedly tries to kill themself so that they don't hurt you.
