Wow your message at the end is so great. God bless your brother...I know if he were on this earth today, I’d be honored to shake his hand, thank him for his service and share stories over a nice bourbon. Great content btw
Great closing. My brother has a bar in his garage that he and a few others with PTSD use. They know it is a place that they can go when they need to talk. I am working on building mine at my house for the same
This is great to hear! This is they type of thing I want to promote! I have repeated an interactive community for BRT to help foster this. I would like to personally invite you and your friends to join. facebook.com/groups/bourbonrealtalkcommunity
Love is like water. The only substance that expands when it is cold. Love fills you up when you give it away. Help me spread the love! You can't go broke giving away love! I love you, and you can give love to others. Some how the more you give away the fuller you feel. Cheers!
Great video! Awesome info. The Blanton’s you had in this video was dumped on my first sons birthday! What are the odds 😁 wish I could get my hands on that.
No way! What is the birthday? I will check to see what I have. I am afraid I finished that bottle. If you want to get more involved I would like to invite you to our free member group. facebook.com/groups/bourbonrealtalkcommunity
Daily, Evan Williams single barrel. Mixer, Jim Beam black 8 yr old. Friday, Old Ezra 7 yr old. Impress, Knob Creek 12 yr old. Special occasions, something hard to get! Honorable mention to JTS Brown! Cheers
The EW Single Barrel is an excellent value for the price. Was passing thorough Chicago and stopped into a Binnys and asked another customer what is a well behaved whiskey for sipping and under $35.00. I was looking for a suggestions. He walked over to the shelf, reached down and picked up and handed me a EW Single Barrel. As it is 86 proof and not an ideal mixer, this is nice with a couple of drops of water.
Just found your channel and I really enjoy it. My one question for you is what are your thoughts on keeping bottles open for long periods of time? I read somewhere that after a year or two bourbon can lose its color and flavor due to the air in the bottle. I would like to know your thoughts on this
We have a podcast coming out on this. Most of the people sharing information on this are getting their recommendation from wine which is very different from distilled spirits chemically. In short, don't worry about corked bottles. They change very slowly, and sometimes for the better. The main problem is UV light. You do not want a bottle in a window seal. In the end the fear of open bottles changing is way overblown. I have 500 open bottles and don't worry about it at all.
No and yes. The quality of your drinking experience is so heavily affected by your environment that you could say a allocated whiskey is not worth the money. You had the right environment and had a quality inexpensive whiskey and had a memorable time. On the other hand, if you are experienced in drinking a variety of whiskey and someone gave you a glass of old crow and a glass of George T Stagg blind, you would likely have a strong preference for the GTS. All of that said this comment didn't make a lot of sense for people who watched the piece because I didn't recommend any specific brands. I talked about the different levels of difficulty of acquisition of whiskey and what you should have on hand to have an appropriate level of whiskey for every occasion.
Old granddad 114 is an underrated bourbon for sure. An ice cube or two, let it sit for a few minutes and forget it. Very good bourbon for the price point.
Absolutely! I am so tired of politicians and cancel culture and hurt feelings. Lets all just relax have a great spirit and realize we are on this rock together and the talking heads on the TV need to be ignored.
Randy. Thank you for the recommendations and for sharing your personal story of your brother. His life and death are not in vain. I too had a older brother who wasn't in the military but was addicted to oxycotin and died of an accidental overdose in 2016. Sharing helps others know they are not alone. 🙏❤
I am sorry for your loss! Thank you for the encouragement. Everyone can do their little part to bring those who are separated back into the fold. Cheers.
Blanton's may be overrated based on flavor. Definitely not worth what it costs on secondary to me. There are no Buffalo Trace products that sit on the shelves at any price, so I am pretty sure that in a different package it would go the way of all BT products...allocated.
Loved the video and appreciate what you said and how you said it! Very informative! Sorry to hear what happen to your brother! I am north of 50 and have an "OK" collection. I recently lost a friend who was a year younger than me. It made me thank about what I have collected and I started thinking, Do I want my friends to enjoy the bourbon I have massed at my funeral or do I want to invite them over and enjoy it with them. I am enjoying it with them!! Life is too short so share the love and share the bourbon with friends!!
Thanks for all you do, Randy! I've learned a ton from your channel and I appreciate your mission to love everyone in a world that's so easily opposed to that. I got to try a Pappy 15 year just last week and immediately thought it was by far one of the best bourbons I've tried, but because I got to enjoy it with a buddy I've been apart from until recently when my family and I moved back to Chicago it made it that much better. Thanks again!
How common is Buffulo Trace in Texas? Living in Frankfort, KY right down the road from Buffalo Trace Distillery, Buffalo Trace makes a good daily drinker for me. Also for the price the quality of bourbon is good in my opinion 👍👍
When it hits it is everywhere and easy to find. When it sells out it is impossible until the next release. As a result I buy it when I see it, so with all the bottles I have I pretty much never run out. Cheers!
Would a bottle of 1792 be an acceptable birth-year bottle for 1972? LOL Seriously though, would a 1972 bottle be easily attainable? (Great video and story at the end, BTW. ;) )
Birth year bottles are tricky because liquor stores can not sell them, and buying them otherwise is technically not legal. The loophole is KY's vintage spirits law. Maybe reach out to Brad Bonds at www.revivalky.com
I'd say calling WT101 just a mixing whiskey is selling it short. I find myself going to it as a neat drinker more often along with Knob Creek. Maybe that's my unsophisticated palate.
I drink more WT101 neat than any other whiskey, so I agree with you. That said, based on its availability and price it fits nicely into the mixing category too.
I definitely agree with the first four categories, but I try not to get too far into the rest. Over time I always become annoyed with the fact that I have these things that I intentionally don't use, wear, or in this case drink.
First off sorry for your loss, and Bourbon has been a bridge, my youngest son lives in KY and has become a Bourbon enthusiast and has brought me to the dark side! LOL I am learning and loving the time we spend hunting and going over the specific bourbons with family and friends. Keep up the good work its very helpful.
Just wanted to say that I enjoyed every minute of this video. I'm new to the bourbon world and I'm intrigued by the complex but at the same time simplicity of the enjoyment of a good bourbon and you my friend just put gas on the fire I have inside of me for learning more about it. Looking forward to watch more of your videos. Hope you and your family have a great weekend.
Thank you so much for the support! My wife has me working on a storage project in the garage all weekend, but I am sure I will get to relax during the superbowl. Cheers!
It was Kansas City. It is now allocated like everywhere else. There were about 2 years that it was unobtainium in north TX and on the shelves there. No longer the case.
I like how you explain subjects. I was wondering if you could do a video on American Blended Whiskey. Basically looking for an explanation of why is Vodka allowed to be mixed with Whiskey. Thanks in advance
The short answer is after supply was disrupted by prohibition and conscription of whiskey producers into the WWII effort there was not enough aged bourbon. They put laws on the books to make it possible to blend some whiskey into a neutral base that had other flavorings and coloring added to try to mimic real bourbon. The practice never faded because it is too profitable for producers to do away with it. This explains what it is: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ebCJI8vM6cw.html
What bourbons you should have to me also depends on your areas market. Personally i refuse to pay over msrp unless the extra is shipping to get it here, and i havent paid over msrp. Not my job to tell people how to live their lives tho.
@@BourbonRealTalk i mean if youre nice to people and support local stores they will often hook you up. I hold strong on this policy and i still have things like stagg jr, bombergers, gts 2020, blood oath and so on. All retail or under.
No problem, I’m just a casual/occasional whiskey drinker and might go through a couple of bottles a year. I do like to try different things though and have been watching som whiskey videos to see what I might like. Thank you for the positive channel and who knows, maybe I’ll splurge on one of these fancy bottles some day! 😊
I have a bottle of Jameson 12 yr I bought almost 10 years ago from Jameson distillery with my name printed on the label. It was the first adventure my wife (girlfriend at the time) and I went on. The trip meant a lot to us. Also it is distilled the year I immigrated to USA. So it has a lot of special meaning. I am planning to open it when my son turn 21 which is still 16 years away. It will be a 36 yr old 12 yr Jameson. Back then I didn't know anything about whiskey, Jameson just happen to be my drink of choice (jameson ginger). Now I am older and more financially stable, I am more interested in learning about whiskey and hopefully start a small collection
Julian Van Winkle, the owner of the Pappy Van Winkle line. Another famous one would be Elmer T Lee (before he passed). It is OK for people to drink whiskey how they like. What is your favorite neat pour?
Great video, not sure if you remember me suggesting the categories a few weeks ago but really cool to see that you not only read and communicate with subscriber but also follow through and make the suggestion! Nice additions with the birth year and the heirloom also! Nice message at the end too. Keep em coming!
Randy, great story and bourbon selections. Completely agree with most! Wish it was easier to get a hold of some of your choices. Give us your thoughts on a few good ryes. Well done. Keep the clips coming. Thank you!
Yes. This video suggests 7 different bottles, that you would own at the same time, that you use for different purposes and occasions. You should check it out...people seem to like it.
Being in Texas you should also try The Garrison Brothers from South Texas. Ranks way high up there with Woodford Reserve & EC et al. Another good Texas Bourbon to try is TX Bourbon & TX Whisky. good all around choices of your Bourbon. thanks for sharing.
Just watched a few videos and really enjoyed the content. I subscribed and was trying to view the website but think there might be a problem. Either way I’ll look forward to more content and check back on the website.
www.bourbonrealtalk.com I will be adding a clickable link to the videos in the future. I am not that technically savvy and it was hard for me to set up, but we are good now.
In central cali Belle meade. $69 Stag jr. $249 here Mckenna 10 year $79 here Elijah Craig 18 yr $200+ Blantons straight from, nowhere here Michters $45 in all grocery stores No van wink or weller here. Weller 12 for $200
My condolences to you and your family regarding your brother. I honor and respect all my Brothers-In-Arms, past and present. Interestingly, I myself entered military service in the year of your birth, 1978. Long live Bourbon and Whiskey.
You either need to look at auction sites, contact Brad Bonds at Revival Vintage Spirits, or get on some of the secondary market pages on Facebook (don't ask me for names). www.revivalky.com/
Love the idea of a birthday bottle for your kid. My boys are young and this would be a great thing to share with them when the time comes. Just have to resist the urge to taste them lol.
Got a birthday bottle. Old Fitz 8 year bottled in 72. Half pint. Distilled in 64 while Pappy was still the master distiller. Paid more than secondary, more like collector price. I'm happy!
Great video! McKenna 10 year is one of my all time favorites. Any suggestions based off that? Elijah Craig small batch, 1792 and Woodford Double Oak are some of my favorite daily drinkers
McKenna is more of a tropical fruit note. Maybe peach or apricot. Not 100% sure, but it isn't cherry or bananas. I get a similar not on buffalo trace mash bill 2. The younger stuff like benchmark has more of a grape note for me...which I like but not the same. The others like Elmer T Lee, Rock Hill Farms, and all the Blanton's have a similar profile for me, but not as much oak influence. To be honest I can not think of an easy to get whiskey that has the profile of McKenna. If any watchers have a suggestion jump in. 1792 is cherry cough drop and banana runts forward. You can find the banana runts in any Brown Forman product (Jack Daniels, Old Forester, Woodford). The cherry cough drop can be found in any young Buffalo Trace mash bill 1 (Buffalo Trace, Benchmark, EH Taylor Small Batch, etc). Woodford Double Oak is mostly characterized by the influenced of a toasted barrel finish. I find that toasted barrel whiskey is over powered by the toasted barrel flavor, so I am guessing you will love any whiskey that was aged in a toasted barrel. Bigger names would be Makers Mark Private Select, Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel, and Michter's Toasted Barrel. Brown Forman has it's own cooperage and ALL of their barrels are toasted and charred. You might like any Old Forester, Jack Daniel's, or Woodford, although some have more toasted barrel influence than others. You will also find that many craft producers use toasted and charred barrels so they can develop flavors faster with shorter aging periods. Examples would be Belfour Spirits (expensive but beautiful and tasty), Ironroot, Still Austin...most Texas distilleries. Hope this helps!
@@BourbonRealTalk Look for the Brown Forma Coopers Craft 100 proof and in my area it runs just under $30. Opening the bottle, it is alcohol forward, so give it a bit of time then try it again. You'll find that it fits right in with the Old Forrester "Memory Row whiskeys" - flavorful and very drinkable. The 86 proof Cooper's Craft is filtered and has a totally different character - its basically subdued and smooth - think summer whiskey.
I lost an older brother to drugs and cancer. I think he took the drugs to insure they got him before the cancer. He was in the Marines during the Vietnam War Era so who knows what horrors he saw or knew of that eventually drove him to his grave. God bless our military boys and girls and if I had one wish that would be for our politicians to stop using our youth as fodder for the battle fields they create.
I just found your channel. I subscribed based on this video. Easy to watch and listen too. Your voice isn't like fingernails on a chalkboard. Very professional.
Enjoyed this video. Thanks for the insight. Recently got my hands on an Old Van Winkle and hope to open it with my son, for a special occasion. Sorry to hear about your brother.
You can find them on illegal secondary Facebook groups, or contact a vintage retailer like Brad Bonds with Revival Vintage Spirits www.revivalky.com/about-us
Hey, thank you for the explanation on your sign off. I am impressed by the sentiment and your sincerity. I am a recent subscriber and hearing the signoff story moved me. Bourbon channels are an escape for me and good for laughs. Yours has some real substance. What a nice suprise. Cheers and thank you for sharing your story.
My father and all of his brothers were in the South Pacific in the 40's and I can tell you from experience that it never goes away totally, and it affects you in different ways for the rest of your days. Peace and love to you as well!
I watched your vids for the information, but your sign off stuck me because so few people will be that real to a stranger. You got my sub just from that sincerity.
The only annual release 18 year I know of is Elijah Craig. You could go the other direction and get anything bottled in 2004. Up to you. Thank you for watching.
Randall, I always enjoy your channel. This segment was great and highly informative. Your sign off today was even more meaningful now that I know the back story. Still look forward to sharing a dram or two one of these days! Sláinte 🥃
I love how talk about bourbon and it makes me want to go out and buy more bourbon. When you end your show talking about your brother I feel your pain and I wish I could will your brother back to life. It makes me appreciate my brother more than I already do.
Great List! Enjoyed the categories, had me nodding my head in agreement with the categories. And sorry for your loss. Appreciate how you turned this channel into a positive place. Thank you.
