Love this video, I fully agree that there is so much great bourbon to be had for under $100. Bought my last bottle of Blanton's 5 yrs ago for $50, good but not killer IMO. I refilled the bottle with a better tasting bourbon, my friends can't understand why my Blanton's taste so much better. LOL!

Whistle Pig 10 Year makes me the maddest of all. The stuff originated from my home province of Alberta, they stick it in a different bottle and charge $120 CAD for it. Ridiculous. From the same distillery, you can get Alberta Premium Cask Strength 100% Rye for $65. Their 20 Year (admittedly below 90 Proof) if $75. They even had an affordable 30 Year a while back. No way.
@leeniemann7955
@leeniemann7955 4 года назад
@@paulbovis1277 the only one that i prefer is single barrel cask strength store picks, some are even Mgp. Not bad if you can find them around $80-90 range in age from 10-13 yrs old, even though the bottle says 10 yr on it. This was the rye that kept searching for more ryes. The only other one the comes close to it in taste is the Old Redemption ryes that have yellow labels and wax tops. Those are in same price range to $85-100. The newer versions aren't the same or worth the price.
@paulbovis1277
@paulbovis1277 4 года назад
@@leeniemann7955 Thanks for the reply! We only have the newer redemption rye's in Alberta. I may lay out the $100-120CAD for the base Whistle Pig offering just once, so I can see for myself if it is worth the high price tag. Store picks of any American products are very hard to come by in Canada as a whole although they do come along from time to time.

As I have told several liquor store managers: I will never, NEVER pay Scotch prices for bourbon. There is such a lack of integrity in the bourbon world. If those wonderful Scotsman can sit on barrels for 10 years before charging $40-50 for it, then why would I pay more for 4 year old bourbon that is often MGB.
@matthewgabbard6415
@matthewgabbard6415 4 года назад
I understand what you're saying, but Bourbon matures much faster because of the hot, humid Ky Summers. Also the new charred oak imparts all that intense vanilla, caramel in shorter time. Scotland maintains a pretty even climate, and the used barrels take more time
@kiwiwanderingusa9988
@kiwiwanderingusa9988 4 года назад
@@matthewgabbard6415 granted, but bourbon also has only a fraction of the possible flavour profiles that Scotch can attain. I've never understood people who pay over $100 for bourbon. The law of diminishing returns kicks in hard after $60, in my opinion.
@sggjose

@kiwiwanderingusa9988
@kiwiwanderingusa9988 4 года назад
@@sggjose I do understand that bourbon by law, has to be new oak and that Scotch doesn't. I also understand warm weather speeds up the results, which is why I'm a big fan of Amruts' products from India. My main point is that the possibilities of flavour profiles for bourbon are severely limited as opposed to Scotch.

This is great. I'm glad you're speaking out about this. The price gouging by mom and pop shops has been ridiculous. Even at chain stores here in Florida, you can't find Blanton's and when you can, it's $110 minimum. I moved on from Blanton's a long time ago. These days I will take a Forester 1920 or Heaven Hill bonded 10/10 times over Blatnon's for that 55-65 price point.

As a noob only a few months in, this is invaluable. Doing blind tastings I basically confirmed my palate agrees with yours. Weller Special Reserve is just cocktail mix, Blantons Gold is exceptional to me, but Blantons Single Barrel was just average. Knob Creek is wild value in this market. Their Rye, 9yr, and Single Barrel Reserve always do well in my own blind tastings against the Master's Keep and Michter's stuff. The difference between Michter's Barrel Strength and the rest of their offerings is profound.

Have to come back to this video because since watching it I have tried Jefferson's Ocean, Blanton's, Weller Special Reserve and Whistle Pig in the past few months. Just want to share my thoughts. Blanton's---I was lucky enough to secure two bottles for around $65 in an ABC store the control state of Virginia. They are limiting to one bottle per person so I have to ask a person who's after Very Old Barton (also limiting to 1 bottle per person) to purchase a bottle for me. Good sweet sipping bourbon yes, and I still love them, but I absolutely agree that the price and the hype is wwwwaaaaayyyyyy too insane. Jefferson's Ocean---A bit of pleasant oaky and sea salt taste but not much edge over other Jefferson's products like the Small Batch. Also when you add some ice to it it turns sour and muddy very quickly. Weller's Special Reserve---pleasant and delicate sip that mimicks a mash bill with a lot of wheat, but hyping this to over $80 is a no-no for me. For its taste I would boldly put it slightly above an average Maker's Mark and pay around $30 for it (I heard that the MSRP is actually around $25?) Whistle Pig---Still trying to get used to rye whiskey so can't say too much, just feeling way too spicy for me at my stage of bourbon tasting

Bourbon is water, grain, sugar and yeast distilled and then aged in charred oak to color and smooth. Thre longer it is aged the more expensive due to loss and storage costs. That said, prices this high for what is ostensibly an unlimited product means there is room in the market for more production and/or more brands.

Bourbon should be easy- unless its more than 12yr old, don't pay more than 60 bucks for it. I literally watched a pappy tasting video by the great grandson of pappy himself say that they couldn't sell it so they intentionally called it rare whiskey and overpriced it. It's literally a scheme, and people are falling for it. These "rare" whiskey schemes are a huge disservice to whiskey lovers who'd otherwise want to buy and try their juice but now can't because of availability or price.

Basil Hayden is 29.99-59.99 in MA. I agree with the over hype. I 100% agree with the whistle pig

Really enjoyed your video. RU-vid randomly suggested you and glad they did, especially since you're in Ohio. Glad I found you.

Just well said. I have had the privilege of trying all of the Pappy’s and while they were good, I wouldn’t pay over $100 for any of them.

One of the good things about living in a regulated state is that they can't charge more than retail for these. You can get Blanton's for $59.99 when it comes in every 90days. Weller is cheap when you can find it.

Have you made a video of over priced/hyped bourbons and an alternative to those, with similar profile, that are available.

I loved that video :) I did wonder when you'd get around to Pappy! Absolutely 💯 percent honest. I like

Good video sir. Appreciate acknowledging the giant man babies that cry when they don't get their bourbon here in ohio. Dealing with bourbon hunters is probably the single most challenging part of our job. Cheers!

This was awesome. Would you be open to making this with scotch? I would def have Johnny Walker Blue label in the overpriced/ overhyped list.

Great and funny video. You are willing to spend more than I am. i cringe at anything over $30 for 750 ml. I did spend $50 on a four roses single barrel and it is good but it was pricey.

I know I'm late to this one, but nothing he said had changed in the year since. I absolutely love several of the whiskies he calls out, but he is right about every. single. one. of them. And all the people talking about Blanton's, but I think he's right that Whistle Pig is the worst offender. Everything they produce is worth half of it's shelf price. Great products, but the market is crazy. Can't wait for the bubble to burst!

WhistlePig, Blantons and Pappy, I could not agree more. I will take Knob Creek, Old Forrester (1897 and 1920) and Russells all day over these others. It amazes me what some people will pay for some bourbons out there.
