In my experience joining a jazz band for the first time, it was really important to nail Latin rhythms for standards like On Green Dolphin Street, Recorda Me, Spain, A Night in Tunisia, etc.

Definitely important!

As always, great video, well presented. You are terrific. I would argue there is one more essential category to know: funk/fusion. I've often needed some of these tunes on jazz and other gigs. 😎

Nice approach. Can add Swing, Latin and Waltzes to enhance.

Hi Brent, Fabulous teasing out of a complicated subject. Your presentation skills are spot on. Your talk has helped me to better understand the differences of each type and what to listen for now in my favorite players and tunes.

Brilliant video, I see all of these tunes come up quite a lot at local jams in the UK, this is definitely a great list for people to start with. Other tunes I see pop up a lot are ‘There will never be another you’, ‘A night in Tunisia’, and ‘Straight, no chaser’. Another category that comes up a lot is funk tunes, most composed by Herbie Hancock, tunes like ‘Chameleon’, ‘Cantaloupe Island’ and ‘Red clay’.

Great recap! Maybe I would ve created an ''odd time signature standard'' category Cheers

Hi Brent! Nice list! A category that is omitted here is definitely Gypsy Jazz, in my opinion. There are many Django songs that are really interesting to know, like "Nuages".
@Learnjazzstandards
@Learnjazzstandards Год назад
Nuages is a great tune!
@jfar3340

gypsy is more of a genre of its own imo rather than a category. Sure the same could be said about bossa, but blue bossa is very much a straight ahead jazz tune.

hello thank you for your videos What difference do you make between a head and a theme ?
@Learnjazzstandards
@Learnjazzstandards Год назад
I think they can be the same thing. Most of the time when people reference the theme in jazz it’s referring to the melody, or head

I think the Blu Note/Hard Bop era stuff would probably be another good category - Nica's Dream, Four, Solar, Recordame, etc.

Hi Brent, may I ask what archtop guitar you are using in this video ?

It’s a custom Victor Baker! I talk a bit more about it in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ym2XbAVD9Ec.html

I have to drop a comment for newbies and even old guys like me, who are just learning the jazz language...We have to hear more straight melodies over chords! Every lesson I come across the instructor is babbling about what inversion we're using in this passing chord and never once plays the damn song. I have no idea what the melody is for Stella by Starlight and other songs that have been ornamented beyond recognition...sorry for the rant.

At 1:35, what is the title of that? I'm trying to pull it up on RU-vid. I think Brent said "rhythm changes "...

Look for the song I Got Rhythm or just search for Rhythm Changes. The chord changes to I Got Rhythm are the “rhythm changes” Brent is referring to.
