For me a big issue was figuring out where to store my R-pod and the associated cost because I live in a development with HOA covenants that only allows residents to have trailers and RVs visible from the street for 72 hours. In my area a basic non-covered, non-utility spot at a gated commercial storage place costs about $100/month and a lot more for a covered or enclosed spot. An additional issue is that it maybe hard to find a place nearby and with availability, so be prepared to be on a wait-list. You can also try to rent a spot at someone's home nearby that doesn't have covenants. This is what I did and found a place about a mile away at about half the cost of storage place by just knocking on a few doors. Just be prepared to sign a liability waiver and show proof that the unit is insured. Whatever you do figure this out BEFORE you buy a travel trailer or RV!

Mike, another fantastic idea on asking someone nearby if you can store your trailer at their house. I will likely put this in a video again giving you credit. Finding storage can be stressful and expensive. The HOA issue adds to the stress for sure. Thanks again for sharing!

Well when you put it that way combined with a depreciating asset forget it! 😄 It's really crazy how the government fees really double and quadruple on RV's. In Washington state you pay sales tax on the purchase, yearly licensing that's charged at a luxury tax rate. Fees to have a pass for state forest. Fees for state parks. Extra to go on the Ferry. All the while you're paying almost twice the gas tax as your fuel economy is almost half with the trailer.

All good points and worth considering before purchasing. The equation is different in Michigan for example, where the plate fee is a one-time cost and there is no ongoing fees or taxes for ownership. Thanks again for the comments!

It's always a good idea to research costs before making an RV purchase. I just posted my own video about this topic here on YT, but think you can't stress this point enough. It's not good for people to buy and then get shocked when the additional costs get added in. The thing to remember is that the price you see on the windshield is never what you're going to pay! Very nice video. Thanks for posting.

Hi John. I am purchasing the 2020 191 model which is a big upgrade from my small Little Guy T@G. I really appreciate all your videos!!!! Do you have a pack up/unpack checklist that I can access or print? Cheryl

Cheryl, we do use a list but it is not published. Any list will be fairly personalized and until I can create a generic list, you may want to start with your best guess and refine it as you go.

Thanks for the information John. I am sure you have a full list of topics that you plan on addressing already. If it is possible sometime in the future could you fit in a brief review of certain appliances or products. For example, various settings for the Dometic Thermostat, reviewing you electronic Brake system, tire pressure monitor, etc... (maybe a few in one video). Just some ideas.

Bob, we plan to cover the convection/microwave soon and then the thermostat soon after. We do plan product reviews on a few items, including the TPMS. So many videos to do, it’s just a matter of getting to them with full research and organized material. Thanks for the suggestions!

Thanks John, I appreciate your research and the way you organize and present the information. I can imagine the hours and days it takes to put together one of your videos. We will take it when we get it. I purchased our R-pod 179 in the fall of 2017. It has been a lot of fun. We have been watching your videos since that time and we have picked up a lot of helpful information and ideas. Thanks again.

Hey John. What a great video. But I was wondering the specs of an Rpod when it comes to towing. I bought a brand new SUV for my Rpod and I don't really think it can tow it.
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 5 лет назад
George, do know the towing capacity of your new SUV? Most Pods won’t weight more than 3,500 lbs loaded. You should be able to find out your tow capacity either on your vehicle or online. You need to subtract gear/people weight from tow capacity. Check out the towing with a Honda Pilot video for more about this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WAIMgWv7Zjo.html

Great video. I’m glad you touched on the subject of time. I myself have been going back and forth in deciding on wether to purchase a trailer or not and time is something I don’t have. Even when I go in a short camping trip I notice the prep time is extensive, as well for the unpacking. Thank you for making this video it was very helpful.
@JohnMarucci

I just now returned from a camping trip and it does take considerable time to get ready and to unpack when you return. Not sure how to shorten this time commitment. Definitely need to count the cost in this regard. Thanks!

John, thanks for your great videos! I'll take delivery of a 2016 R-Pod 179 tomorrow. Two questions: (1) it appears to have been lifted, but doesn't have off-road tires or the "Hood River" logo. Is it really a Hood River Edition? (2) My 2019 Tacoma doesn't have a brake controller installed yet. Can I hook up and drive carefully without a trailer brake controller?
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 4 года назад
Greg, Congrats on the new 179! It is very possible that a prior owner put a lift kit on the trailer without it being a Hood River. You will need to to get a brake controller pretty quickly as it isn't safe towing without trailer brakes and most states require them. If you need a good brake controller, I have the Tekonsha on my storefront that you can get in a couple days via Amazon... amzn.to/30GCdMz. You can also ask on the R-Pod Owners forum (rpod-owners.com) about brake controllers. Many also recommend the P3.

I used a Ford Escape with tow package for my Scamp 16 footer. 1) should have bought used. Thought I could compromise on the inside height. After a month of feeling cramped, I no longer wanted to compromise. My mileage went from 21 - 22 average to 15 - 16 MPG while towing, not bad at all.

Informative as usual John. The RPod was not our first Rodeo so we had all the bases covered. We pull ours with a Tacoma 9-12MPG is spot on. Pulled it with a Tundra once and got 11 but had power to spare and onboard brake controller. Don’t plan on upgrading but put the Tacoma on severe duty maintenance schedule (more $).

Rob, thanks for the feedback on your towing experience. I have to admit to still being very pleased with the Tundra. All the best!

So is this worst than rent?
@JohnMarucci

I guess that would depend on how much rent is. RVing isn't cheap at all, as paying for campsites can be expensive, besides all the other expenses mentioned in the video. Thanks!
