In this video, I reflect back over my time as an RV owner and share 5 Things I Wish I’d Known before I purchased my first RV. If I had known this information before I made my purchase, I might have had more realistic expectations, been better prepared for the experience, and made some different choices. I share tips along the way to help RV purchasers be better prepared for the experience of purchasing a new RV including qualities to look for in a good RV dealer.

Another great video John! I saw that you mentioned considering proper towing setup. I ran about a year with just a sway bar thinking why do I need anything more for such a light 3000 lb trailer and boy was I wrong. Sure it stopped the sway but it didn't stop the reason for the sway in the first place which was improper weight distribution on the tow vehicle. Once I put a weight distribution hitch (WDH) on I couldn't believe how much better it towed and even though a WDH is heavy (100 lbs!) it allowed my vehicle tow well up to the maximum towing capacity of the vehicle. I think a WDH is one of the biggest towing safety accessories and a must have especially if your tow margin is under double what your towing!
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 4 года назад
Mike, I fully agree. I wouldn’t tow without a WDH at this point. It really helps push the trailer weight to the front axle of the tow vehicle making the ride so much better. Thanks again for your comments!

I didn’t end up buying an RPod but your videos (and others) helped a newbie. I was terrified of the dump station and was only going to book full service sites, missing lots of really nice locations. I watched HOURS of sewer dump videos and when it did come time to do a sewer dump, it went exactly as it should. The how to videos from all you great people should be required viewing!!

I bought my RPod from a private party. A friend recommended that she video the orientation that the seller went through with me. I was SO thankful for her idea. I had never owned an RV before....it was ALL new to me! There was so much info to take in. I never would have remembered everything the very helpful seller told me. I have reviewed those videos numerous times!

Three things about our R-Pod we wish we knew... -A/C is oversized and LOUD! -Dinette is very uncomfortable. -Wet bath is a very small space. Thanks for adding to our list of things to look for😁

Wow, you nailed Yes, you NEED a good to great Walk-thru or orientatation, you WILL have warranty work... in first year, and absolutely you need the Dealer or sales team to want to help you! Was a Newbie pop up family four yrs ago and my dealer came through! Even today I forget sometimes they are hand crafted. Great point about lowering expectations, although it's easier said than done. Thanks!

John, thank you for all your videos. My husband and I have watched so many and they have all been very helpful. We recently purchased our first RPod and with the questions that come up, I can always fall back on, “But John Marucci says.....”. When you are planning your next video, could you make one about the electrical system? We’ve come across a trailer park that only has 50amp electrical plug in service. I know the RPod is 30amp. What do we do when this comes up? I’ve also been concerned about appliances I want to use plugged in on the outside of the trailer and running at the same time. The heating plate I want to use is 15amp. I also want to use an instant pot outside AND the micro wave inside. I’m concerned about blowing fuses. If we blow a fuse, how serious is it and what do we do to fix the fuse? I know some are flip switches and some need to be replaced. We are also thinking we need a second battery and portable solar panels for camping areas where we have no hookups. We haven’t a clue about solar. Help! Could you make a video about this? I’m sure we aren’t the only ones with these questions. Thank you!
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 4 года назад
Cindy, You can easily pick up a 50amp to 30amp adapter from my Amazon store at the link below. As far as using the outside heating plate and microwave inside at the same time, you will have to try and see how things go. I haven't had issues using more than one thing at a time. I do, however, carry fuses with me just in case I need to replace anything (link below). I haven't had need for solar as I mainly stay at places with electric hook ups, so I can't speak to using solar, inverters and extra battery set ups. Hope this helps, here is the link. Once you click through, go to the R-Pod starter kit area. www.amazon.com/shop/johnmarucci

When buying our Rpod (our 2nd RV) we basically went to the closest dealer as we wanted a Rpod. Not the best dealer, but it ended up working in our favor. The young RV washers at the dealer had made fun of our Scamp and I used their unprofessional comments to get the price down to where I wanted it... I agree on the good walk through - we screwed up on that as I hadn’t eaten... I say plan on hours for the walk through!

Has anyone experienced electrical lose in some areas of your Rpod when it is bugged into a 30 amp 120v outlet? Your refrigerator runs fine of battery and propane but will not function on plug-in 120v. Not only does the refrigerator not run, none of the interior power outlets function. I had a professional electrician check all of the breakers, fuses, and refrigerator connections and none are the source of the problem. The electrician didn’t have time to check further but his was that it must be a wiring ground problem somewhere. As anyone experienced this a have an answer?

Mark, that is a strange occurrence. I’d point you to the rpod-owners.com forum. There are a bunch of experienced folks on that forum and someone may be able to help.

Wish I'd known the risks involved with RV storage, and wish I'd known how unethical RV repair journeymen can be, especially when they travel to you and provide a service. I wish I'd known that theft can be a real issue at some campsites, that rodents in an RV will absolutely drive you crazy, and that you can't have too much plugged-in at one time without overloading the electrical system. But I still love it! Please continue doing what you do. It is needed and of great value. I'm hoping there's an R-Pod 192 in my future!

Hi John. Another fantastic video. I'm sad to announce that my R-pod was recently T-boned in October. I took her into the dealer and luckily, little damage was done. However, there is a propane leak and they couldn't figure out where it was coming from. I was extremely irate and ran out of there basically shouting at the little old lady because of her profound ignorance. Anyway, I was wondering if you had any suggestions for fire proofing my R-Pod. Maybe some sort of spray? I smoke cigarettes and I worry about blowing the poor gal to pieces. Thanks in advance, George.
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 4 года назад
George, if it were me, I'd visit a different RV shop to see if they can find the propane leak. Not much of an option as you really shouldn't use the unit if you have a propane leak as it is very dangerous. I don't have any advice to fireproof the unit. I suppose you could ask on the R-Pod Owners forum and see what folks say: www.rpod-owner.com

@@JohnMarucci Thanks for your insight John. I practically stripped the entire propane system and installed 2 tanks that are probably 1/3rd bigger than the original. It's been smooth sailing so far. The hardest part was taking the sawzall to the place where the original tank was welded.

Was just thinking about these issues today and wondering if I'm out on an extended trip and even though I'm still under warranty and havr a mechanical problem and need to leave the campground what do I do. I have Good Sam's Extended Service plan but time may be of the essence.

My one thing was, while I knew most of the things I would need, I wish I knew that the quality of the items in the starter kit (10 foot, cheap sewer hose, cheap fresh water hose that kinked easily ) waa in general subpar.

Mark, spot on with your comment. My starter kits have been equally weak in terms of the quality of the items provided. All the best!

Sorry to hear this. Unfortunately there are still units that are not well built. I have had my share of issues to work through. My R-Pod second birthday review video covers a bunch of these issue. All issues have been fixed and the Pod is good shape, but getting here wasn't without some pain. All the best!
