@@fredrodnick2881 I had an Intellivision too! It was great until my rich neighbor introduced me to games with music, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). 😎
Lots of great memories playing Burgertime with my dad on the Intellivision.Years later I bought it on the NES with some birthday money and he said"How many more times are we gonna own this game?" 😄 I told him"As many times as we can". 😄
Good video. Genesis version of Midnight Resistance is better than the arcade simply due to the control. The turny knob in the arcade is an absolute chore to use. The graphics in the Genesis port are pretty sparse in comparison, but the music sounds about a billion times better than the arcade version.
Erin Plays it can’t really be played on mame due to the arcade cabinets having duel joysticks I believe The genesis version is fantastic, massively understated, and has probably my all time favourite soundtrack ... definately should give this one a review on its own !
Your entire fashion aesthetic in this video has such on-point color choices. Your hair, glasses and clothes complement each other strikingly well, they contrast in a vibrant and colorful way.
BurgerTime is my all-time favorite. It's basically the game that made me fall in love with video games as a little dude, and set me on the path I'm on today. Thanks, Peter Pepper.
What about Robocop?! One of my absolute favorite 80's movie based arcade side-scrollers. And with his inclusion in the MK11 Aftermath DLC it would have been nice to see him included
My favorite Data East games are Boogie Wings (ARC) and Fighter's History (SNES). Also I'd like to mention Suiko Enbo: Fuuun Saiki (Saturn), Night Slashers (ARC) and Wizard Fire (ARC). Donald Land (NES) and Captain America and the Avengers (ARC) are ok if you like these characters.
Great video, Erin! I’m glad you included Caveman Ninja in this. I held the world record for the arcade version for about a year. Hoping to one day get it back. By the way, getting the bonus food items in BurgerTime doesn’t just give you points - it gives you extra pepper, too, so there is a lot of reason to go for it when it appears. Three of them appear per stage.
That is awesome, congrats! And I didn't realize the food items in Burger Time gave you extra salt/pepper until people started commenting....oops! Anyway, thanks for watching!
I love Burgertime, Robocop, Kid Niki, Breakthru, Karnov, almost every game by Data East. Looking at this video took me to a nostalgic trip. Thanks, Erin
Thanks for mentioning the Real Ghostbusters. It's one of my favorite arcades. It's aged well. But, for whatever reason, it's always gone unnoticed and underrated.
Fighter's History Dynamite: Karnov's Revenge will have to be my favorite Data East game and Captain America and the Avengers Arcade :) Thank you for making this video :)
I loved the Real Ghostbusters, but it was a quarter muncher. Playing it at the Sears when I was a kid was the only reason I would walk in that store. I'd get a solid 10 minutes with the game for a couple quarters, but so worth it haha! I hear it's just a re-skin of another game, but I'm sure it just wouldn't be the same.
Not by Data East, but the Game Boy version of the Real Ghostbusters (I think it also had a NES release but only in Europe), is probably the better of the lot.
Data East is one of my favorite retro game companies, and I’m glad you covered them! I think my favorites would be Captain America and the Avengers, Heavy Barrel, and Gate of Doom. I’ve described Gate of Doom as Heavy Barrel meets D&D. :P
As somebody whose been eyeballing all these Data East games on the Switch eShop (usually selling for between $2 to $8) recently , it was awesome to see this list.
The bonus item in BurgerTime does award an additional pepper. You can actually hold up to nine peppers (It's a small container!). Also, in Bad Dudes, the first boss is actually Karnov. The boss music (whiched you used) is actually Karnov's theme music. Data East also made some memorable pinball machines like Phantom of the Opera, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, WWF Royal Rumble, and Star Trek 25th Anniversary. And yes, someone mentioned the best ever hype music in an arcade game.... the boss music in Data East Captain America and the Avengers. OK? GO!
Atomic Runner on the Genesis is easily my favorite Data East game! It's a unique shooter/platformer hybrid with a fantastic soundtrack! I haven't played anything else quite like it. No one ever talks about it. Highly recommended! Much better than its arcade counterpart.
Damn, I forgot that was by Data East. Yeah it's fantastic, it's one of the reasons I plug in my Mega Drive every now and then. And yeah just for the music (even though visuals are better as well) is way better on the home console.
I’ve been waiting for a burger time review. Definitely threw my controller at the tv or my brother plenty because of that game. Thanks for this. 👍 Also noticed you respond to your fans. Good on you.
I had always heard great things about Windjammers but never saw it in action and it looks great! I learned about some new games from your list here to check into as well, so thanks for a diverse and interesting bunch :)
It's fun to explore the differences in gameplay between the various ports of Burgertime. Especially 2600, Intellivision, Colecovision, NES, and Gameboy. In some of them, you can earn extra peppers by grabbing the bonus items. Enemy behavior patterns vary slightly, which greatly changes your pathfinding strategy.
One thing Erin: In "Burgertime," the ice cream, coffee and fries were also worth One shot of pepper. You might not have gotten a full recharge, but getting the food in the center could make a big difference when it came to having pepper to get you out of trouble or being stuck between food villains with no way out.
Great videos Erin, I'm glad you mentioned Midnight Resistance as I had that on the commodore 64, I was however a little disappointed not to see "Secret Agent" (also known as Sly Spy). 😔
Here are some of my favorites Atomic Runner (Genesis) Dark Seal Diet Go Go Gate of Doom High Seas Havoc Karnov’s Revenge Night Slashers Spinmaster Trio The Punch: Never Forget Me
Loved the video! You don't know how happy you made me that you included Wind Jammers in your list! I don't like many sports video games, but that is one that I love! I'm surprised you didn't mention Heavy Barrel tho. Great run and gun game! You should definitely check that out!
Bloody Wolf for TurboGrafx is my favorite. At one point you have drag a handcuffed George H.W. Bush (pretty detailed resemblance) back through all the levels you fought your way through to find him. And contains the immortal line, "Mr. President, I am a Bloody Wolf." The game's 30th anniversary will be this fall.
My favourite Data East game is Dragon Ninja in the arcade! So much fun! I need multiple credits to finish it, as towards the end it gets really hard to avoid getting damaged.
The problem with the NES burger time is you have to be perfectly centered on the ladder before you can go up or down. The intellivision version was much less frustrating
That was awesome! So may quarters for so little advancement in a game, M.a.m.e. gave back. Thank you for showing Boogie Wings, it's nuts with two players. Your plane has a hook and can pick up the other player or a giraffe. When you crash you become a little dude but can shoot and ride on tons of crap flying at you. Good stuff, I learned a lot!
Two of my favorite Data East arcade games are Mutant Fighter/Death Brade and Robocop. After watching this, I fired up retro arch on my phone and looked up those two classics.
I'd occasionally play Tumblepop in the arcades, it's pretty much a game with a simple but solid gameplay loop that keeps increasing the difficulty with each stage. It's great due to the simplicity of its design and how well it's used. Joe and Mac were also quite good, rented it a few times when I had a SNES.
Sly Spy (or I think it was called Secret Agent in some regions) is one of my favorite Data East games. And my top one is probably Street Hoop (or Steet Slam or Dunk Dream) for the Neo Geo. It's like NBA Jam but with way more colorful visuals, cool music, and fun basketball action.
Thanks for the list! There were quite a few titles I didn't know about. My personal favourites mostly in there: Dragon Ninja (the arcade halls near me all had the japanese version for some reason), Joe & Mac and I'm glad you mentioned Karnov (remarkably full of secrets for an arcade game), Midnight Resistance (which was remarkable for its rotating joystick, practically an arcade only feature) and Kid Niki. I played Tumblepop as well, but I'm more of a Bubble Bobble enthusiast. Never cared much for Windjammers, for some reason. Still a classic. I always thought it was by SNK! 😅 I also liked Sly Spy (aka James Bond the arcade game).
a Data East collection cd rom came bundled along the Packard Bell desktop my dad bought when we were growing up. it was so janky, the keyboard mapping was odd and the speed seemed off. I still tried playing the hell out of it. The Karnov free play screen made the game look so fun despite me barely being able to make it 20 seconds in lol. Thanks for bringing back tons of memories, great video!
Nice list, I don't think I've ever seen videos of "The Real Ghostbusters" arcade game until now. Looks like one heck of a gem in the evolution of "Ghostbusters" games, and yes, definitely better than the shitty NES port. Hopefully this arcade version didn't "Conglaturate" you in the end. LOL
I always thought of Data East as the Dennys of arcade games. You probably weren't going out to play them, but when the other arcade cabinets were crowded, you'd find one of their games to keep you busy.
Also, if you like "capture the flag" games, there is a Data East tribute game called "Heavy Burger," where players look like Peter Pepper from "Burgertime," and must move a bag of money (from "Lock and Chase") from the center game screen through various other games (Burgertime, Side Pocket, Karate Champ, Midnight Resistance and Lock and chase) to their "Bank Screen" taken from "Bad Dudes". Deposit the bag of cash you carried to win. However along the way you could fight and kill the other players, as well as the characters from each game, and get unique weapons to fight with. Look it up.
I used to play Side Pocket on Genesis, years after I bought for my Super Nintendo, both, very similar and good. Of course, SNes is better, but I have good memories on Genesis version.
I played and beat the entire Joe&Mac trilogy on the recent SNES Joe&Mac collection released by Retro-bit. They're certainly not ground-breaking titles, but very enjoyable
Best Data East game was Captain America and the Avengers (arcade). It's often overlooked because of TMNT, The Simpsons, and X-Men, but it was a great game.
Nice video! Seeing as you asked, my favourite Data East game, which nobody seems to have mentioned, is Kung-Fu Master. Once you have have the hang of the controls, it plays absolutely beautifully and gets very frantic at times. I still love it, and I'm still getting better at it.
In Bad Dudes, if you held down a+b buttons during game play for like 2-3 seconds there is the sound effect and the screen flashes. This is a power attack that hits all enemies. Don't move, though, as moving will cause it to cancel and have to start over. I had accidentally found this out on a play through. This is a real great move to use when in the sewer fighting the ninja that multiplies himself.
Burger Time came out when I was 8, and I've loved it ever since. Always one of my favorites. My complaint with it, though, is that getting on and off the ladders seems to be more difficult than it should be. Your timing has to be absolutely perfect, or you get stuck just enough for the wieners to catch up to you.
My personal favorite is Night Slashers. I was stoked when I found out it was on Switch, although disappointed in the choice of the attack button which couldn't be switched. Fortunately, the recently-added button-mapping feature in the Switch rectified this issue for the most part. As for Bad Dudes, one thing I found weird about punching was I almost never got close enough to my enemies to make contact with it. It would have made more sense to have your character kick when further away.
