I'd never thought of that with thongs. Looks like I'll be getting a pair, for just this reason!

I love how thoughtful you are Here in the USA there are several companies that offer more sustainable options. The laundry soap and dishwasher soap that I use come from a company with a goal of reducing plastic waste. The pods come in metal cans - some of which I have painted for other uses. I really wish we would get away from liquid laundry soap! There is a company I need to find again that makes biodegradable zippered bags for sandwiches,etc and they offer trash bags. If I don’t buy the laundry pods, I buy the soap that comes in dry sheets, which dissolve really quickly. I recently purchased unpaper towels (I believe that is the company name). They are made of flannel cloth and stitched around the the edges. They cling to each other, come on a roll like paper towels. I have found though, that there are times when I still want paper towels, especially to wipe out greasy dishes before washing them as I don’t want that clogging my pipes. There is also a company that gives away glass bottles for cleaning products. They have silicone “gloves” to protect them from breaking. The refills are one ounce glass bottles that you add to the container of water…I like the pods you showed.

Currently I use liquid laundry soap, but I have a spray bottle where I put in 2xfingers worth of detergent, and the rest with water. Saves heaps and lasts a lot longer. But I look forward to not using it at all. Do you have the name of that company?

@Kim Sargeant: I love that so many companies are jumping on board being more sustainable. Even if they’re just ‘jumping on the bandwagon’ so to speak, it means there are many more options available to us. I’ve seen a few family owned companies around Australia that are making cloth towels designed to replace paper towels. It’s great to see. 😊

@TheRubeeRose: I’ve been similar to that for a while at home, plus one spray bottle of it in the van, too. I think I’d only fill a sink with dishes once a year, if that! Mind you, I have a dishwasher, so that takes care of most of my dishes, but when I need to hand wash something, using the spray bottle of diluted dish soap saves heaps of time and water. 😊

Brilliant video. I'm with you. I often use butchers paper deli and other items have been wrapped in in place of paper towels. Dare I say lots of hikers use a dedicted pee rag, instead of toilet paper for wiping themselves, after a wee. For years I have travelled with a facewasher kept slightly wet in a container for wiping my hands and face when I travel. I so don't get the obsession with baby wipes. Also for wet shower floors in ammenities blocks, just take a second pair of dry thongs/flip flops, to put on your feet. Puppy pads are a new phenomenon, invented since few people continue to buy a daily newspaper, which was traditionally used for house training puppies. Powdered milk also saves on a whole lot of plastic bottles too. As for those disposable aluminium trays, I turn to them if cooking for a huge crowd, where I will be stuck with the dishes, eg baking vegies for 25 people for Christmas Day, but for general use, no way. I love the reusable zip lock bags, as save so much space and a worthy investment. Also please people do always try and separate recylcable rubbish and find places to leave compotstable waste as you travel, if at all possible. The less we have going into landfill and the less plastics we use the better it is for our planet, as well as pur pockets!

Absolutely agree about the powdered milk option! It's what I'm using too. Saves on storage as well. I'm still looking for an alternative to the aluminium trays for cooking. I haven't found any yet tho!

@Fiona Ludbrook: Ahuh, foil trays and stuff like that definitely have a place. Much less so in van life than in house life, though, I reckon!
@JumpWithNoFear

@TheRubeeRose: I’ve seen and tried some silicon baking trays and the like that are easier to clean, but they’re so floppy and hard to manage, so they’re definitely not great for taking out of the house. I can barely manage them just from the oven to the bench. 🤣

Oh, the latest paper towels I bought have perforations at half the distance, so you can just tear off half sheet. Sorry, don’t know the brand.

I will definitely check out the companies that you mentioned: Compostic & Biogone! & Whogivesacrap! Thank you !! I've got a drink bottle with a pull-up spout, so I can use it while driving! I'm still trying to find one that is insulated though. Yes, I've got my face clothes ready - microfibre for the win! (plus towels) I re-use a lot of my plastic bags when they zip-locks! I love Tirtyl products!! In particular the Swedish cloths! I'm using them all the time, very handy!
@JumpWithNoFear
@JumpWithNoFear 8 месяцев назад
I recently found out that Swedish dish cloths are one of those things in Sweden that are ubiquitous there. I’ve seen Swedish people in the comments on reviews of Swedish dish cloths where they’re genuinely surprised that the cloths are only just now becoming known outside of Sweden where they’re seen in every home, shop, factory, etc, for DECADES. I’m not sure where you’re based, Ruby, but if in Australia, do you know of Chux cloths? The Swedish dish cloth is as common in Sweden, as the old Chux cloth is (or maybe was) here in Australia!

Oh, I also wash ziplock bags, and wash them, and have them upside down on anything that sticks up to dry. I do have a bunch of sandwich and snack sized parachute nylon ones, with Velcro closures, that I made. They’re not suitable for wet stuff, but they are great for so many things. I also used a shower curtain to make sandwich wraps, like smash (and probably lots of other companies) sell too.
@JumpWithNoFear
@JumpWithNoFear 8 месяцев назад
What do you use the nylon bags for?
@MelanieCook
@MelanieCook 8 месяцев назад
Took me for ever to find how to comment! I not only use reusable drink bottles, but I bought a bunch or cheap ones from eBay, and use them in the fridge (or the freezer) to keep cold water handy. Plus, when travelling, I freeze them at home before leaving, and use them to keep my esky cold. That may not apply to folks like you with a van, who probably have an actual portable fridge freezer, but it is great for short trips!
@JumpWithNoFear
@JumpWithNoFear 8 месяцев назад
A bunch of van life people don’t have powdered fridges! It makes so much more sense to freeze bottles of water rather than using ice.

Lots of good ideas. I ask a friend who occasionally buys table grapes 🍇 to save their larger container ziplock top plastic bag with holes punched in it for fruit to breath/out gas so they don’t over-ripe & spoil too fast. Then if you carefully wash & dry mini cucumbers 🥒 and put half a piece of paper towel in bottom, then 2 or 3 mini cucumbers, then other half half of paper towel on top of those, then 3 more (they come 6 to a package here) for keeping in cooler they last longer without spoiling. Once I proved to myself that this works to absorb the moister that escalates spoilage I order some cotton linen weave dish towels (NOT Terri cloth) and cut one into 3rds to do the same moister absorbing trick, then toss into laundry bag to clean. And since those cotton dish towels come in sets of 3 I have the 2 others to use in my camp kitchen kit. On paper towels that I use only when you are cleaning something gooie that won’t wash out of a cloth towel I got a bag of 100 compressed paper towels and put 10-15 in an empty medicine Rx container to keep them dry, and keep in my camp kitchen kit. They uncompress in a small amount of water & I either clip on a clothes line (or I hang from ceiling with a magnet so it will dry out as I travel). Much easier to store than that awkward big roll. Bonus is I’ve been able to create sample kits for friends to try out of old Rx bottles. One last thought is I got the little ziplock top bag of 100 loose in the bag, but I noticed that most of the ones for sale now are individually wrapped in plastic & then in a big bag. Talk about extremely wasteful… PS: I’m with you on reusing those ziplock top bags until they wear out.

I'm interested to know about those "compressed paper towels". I also use paper towels for all of my vegies that I store, they make the vegies all last heaps longer. I also do this for cold meats that I occasionally buy (stops the slime!). And yes, I currently cut my paper towels into smaller pieces. If I use 2x 1/4 - who cares it's still only 1/2 a sheet! Hate the waste.

All really cool ideas, @Karin Hart! However, I have one question: what are mini cucumbers?? LOL! I’m going to have to look this up, because surely we have something similar, and perhaps it just goes by a different name. 🤣

@TheRubeeRose: having smaller pieces really helps to use less paper towel, doesn’t it!

@@JumpWithNoFear they are just smaller than big cucumbers, maybe the size of a regular dill pickle. 🥒 One mini cucumber (I think also called a Pershing Cucumber when you look for seeds to plant. Anyway, about two years ago I found I was waking up feeling dehydrated and I couldn’t fix that no matter how much water I drank. I got into a fight with a gopher stealing plants out of my garden (sucker even ate garlic!) so I researched them and discovered that gophers don’t drink water. They get all their hydration from the plants they eat… hmm 🤔. So I read up on people & found we are better hydrated if we eat wet foods like tomatoes, melons 🍈 (especially watermelon 🍉 ), cucumbers, and a lot of summer fruits 🍎 🍏 like apples plums apricots etc. anyway, I like to start my day eating one mini cucumber and then I seem to get the hydration I need (I do drink a lot of plain old water). I eat it whole like you might eat a carrot 🥕 without cutting it up. Keep those videos coming.
@JumpWithNoFear
@JumpWithNoFear 8 месяцев назад
@karinhart489 I do know that we certainly can get the water we need from our food, because I really don’t enjoy drinking plain water that much, and so I have an iced cocoa drink that I make on water (in a similar way to how instant coffee might be made, but cold) instead, and that keeps me hydrated enough. That’s really interesting how much of a difference the mini cucumber has made for you. Well done on finding what works for you! We’re all so different, and finding ways to meet our hydration and nutritional needs seems to vary a lot. Good on you! 😊
