7 EXPENSIVE JRPGs... That Are Worth the Cost

I know game prices -- and especially retro JRPG prices -- are insanely high right now, and they'll probably get higher. That's why I wanted to bring you a list of some pricey JRPGs that, in my opinion, are WELL worth the high cost. These games will give you dozens of hours of enjoyment, and can you really put a price on that? (You can, and it's sort of expensive ... but worth it!)
Let me know of any pricey-but-worth-it games in your collection down below!

For those who don't need physical editions, steam offers some of these! Grandia is $20, Shining Force 1&2 are literally a dollar each, and Blue Reflection is $60. Really hoping to see Lunar on there one day. Looking forward to a part 2 of this!

This is a great point, if you can't afford these games physical, you definitely should play them any way you can, and Steam has a lot of fantastic, classic games available

Most of the phantasy star games...except the first I believe, are on Steam for less than dollar as well. Probably rough on those that don't like old Jrpg mechanics, but IV is worth everyone's time in my opinion

U single handedly convinced me at the age of 36 to start getting into rpgs, jrpgs as a genre for the first time. Growing up my rival in middle and high school was big Into ff7 and xenogears so I gravitated away from them. But being a mature adult or atleast a grown boy lol, I started wanting more in depth storytelling, and u and ur channel make all of these games seem fantastic! I’ve always been a huge Zelda fan so I started with action rpgs, like the tales series, but now I’ve gotten into persona, disgaea, dragon quest, star ocean and currently neo the world ends with you. Anyways sorry to drag on, huge thanks tho!!!

@@roxaskingheartssome people just want to own things, you know? I've emulated games before, but owning a retro console and buying the games feels a lot better than just downloading. Still gonna emulate some games that I really want to play asap, but only if I can't find physical copies anywhere.

I can only recommand you to deep dive into Xenogears, watching or listening to Resonant Arc or Retrograde Amnesia podcasts alongside. This game is a masterpiece for anyone willing to really commit to it. There's about 0% chance that a game with a deeper and better story will ever be created.

Shining Force 1&2 are usually included on Sega Genesis collections for recent consoles and it's always cheap. They also include the Phantasy Star games. Not bad for a game you can usually pick up for $20 or so.

Tales of Eternia is still one of my favorites in the series, and it's SO HARD to get anyone who started with Symphonia to even give it a chance. I think it was the small party that made it for me, because you really get to spend time with each of them seeing their relationships and personalities develop. Unrelated note but just a tip: you may want to either throw on a red tint filter or lower the green levels in your editing program to lessen the amount of yellow-green coloring in the footage of yourself. It'll really warm up your appearance and look more natural. :)

Tales of Eternia saved my aunt's life. My couisn was wanting it for his birthday and my aunt going to the new Toys R Us in Manhattan that opened a few months previously to buy it when it came out the day before caused her to be late to work. Hopefully you can piece together what happened one day after the relase of Tales of Eternia, where being late to work in Manhattan would save one's life.

Lunar and the other Working Designs psx games didn't have different editions. So a jewel case only copy is just a copy missing the box and extras. Their games kind of predate the multiple edition thing. It's one of the things that made them so exciting and special at the time.

I just saw that you had the Lunar 2 cover art in your thumbnail and I just wanted to tell a sad story: Lunar 2 Eternal Blue, as a child, was the greatest game I ever played. From the moment I saw the artwork (likely in a game pro magazine, I was a subscriber for YEARS) I knew I had to have it, and some how the kid version of me found enough money to buy the complete version. It was the greatest purchase of my life and I had never been so proud. I loved every second of that game. One day, I invited a girl into my house just to show her my video game collection. Obviously, there were supposed to be no girls in my house. We had a nice time, so I thought, even though she was moving away in four days. Should have never done it. She had her brothers come and break into my house the day they were moving and they stole my entire collection from me. I’m not gonna get into everything I had, but by far I was the most pissed off by Lunar 2. I had never been so deep into a story in a video game. Still makes me sad today.

Correction, the two Lunar games on PSX were never released as "standard" and collector's. The jewel cases you see are simply from people who lost the box and extras or simply got it used bitd like that. WD published those games (like many other WD games, for example Growlanser on PS2) ONLY in those that you call "collector's edition" packages. Happy hunting. By the way if you want Tales of Eternia, it is easily available on PSP at much lower prices.

I loved Lunar and am so glad I kept my copy. Still have the whole box and the book. And I have a working playstation so still able to play it when I get the bug. I love the story and characters even today. Something about going back to a game that meant so much. Glad to see these fantastic games getting love. Jrpgs are less appreciated in this world of instant gratification there is little patience to reach the best parts. If you get a chance to play these gems please do. An expensive game that is rare and expensive is Vanguard Bandits. Really good game with tactical elements and a story that was fantastic. Also had multiple endings and fantasy with giant suits of armor. Can't recommend it enough

You can get tales of Eternia on PSP as well but you have to be careful of which UMD had the latest patch as some copies have a game breaking glitch. Its called the volt glitch due to when the boss fight appears it happens every time. That version is widescreen as well as it contains the Japanese intro but otherwise is the game same as the PS1 other then a name change. The Non Volt glitch copies is the one you want can go anywhere from 75 to 100 dollars and the volt glitch copies goes for 30 to 50 dollars but you do not want those copies.

I still have the first Lunar game for the PS with all the goodies in good condition. The box ain't perfect, but the appearance of everything else might as well be, which is surprising given how much I tend to go through instruction books or guides as a kid. I just randomly decided to give that one a shot back then and legitimately liked it. It wasn't revolutionary by any means but... it was a solid fun time.

I just remembered that I got a duplicate collectors edition of Lunar 2 still lying around for 15 years. I should try to sell that one. Thanks for the reminder 😂 I hope it is complete with the map and everything. I also need to replay Grandia. I don't remember anything about the story, but remember loving it so much ❤ I also remember Suikoden 2 being very expensive in the past and then grabbed it at a German gamestop for around 10 dollars. The clerk was really upset that someone didn't know the value and priced it totally too low 😂

Nice video. You get to the poinht without having to make excessive use of jokes and memes, that's welcome. About Lunar, Eternal Blue actually sells for more, depending if you're going for a CIB or a full CIB item. You know, the "pendant" factor hahaha. A full CIB in very good condition won't sell for less than $250.

I would personally add Legend of Mana (if there's no re-release) or the Suikoden series to that list. I can't pick just one or two out of the 5 main games because every sequel uses your save from the previous game if you have one, which is a neat gimmick that I've only ever seen with Golden Sun and TLA, and I think more JRPGs should utilize this.

Just a note about a cheaper alternative to officially play Shining Force 1 & 2: I had never paid attention to the series back in the 16-bit days, but I started loving it after I tried SF 1&2 on Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection for PS3. Bought the game at a used game store last year for about $15, and it was well worth it (as long as you have a working PS3 handy).

JRPGs are so expensive in general, you could easily make a series out of this. Also, it's perfectly fair to talk about modern out-of-print games on lists like these. Reprints from companies like VGP are never guaranteed. If anything, the prices rare games go for before reprints are close to what their price will be when reprints stop and become impossible. Blue Reflection for example has no reprint in Europe and is still pricey here.
@JustTheGems
@JustTheGems Год назад
Yeah, and I wonder if/when the reprinted games will start to go back up in price. After all, being limited, I think it's really only delaying the inevitable...

Someone mentioned Xenosaga 3 already, and I will second that. Of course, you will need the first two games, which are not nearly as expensive, though the second game has been creeping slowly upward in price. I would recommend Suilkoden V as well, and it is now only half of it's $200 peak in 2021. Blue Reflection... on my to play pile now thanks to my wife getting it for me for my birthday when we paid a visit to Video Games Plus physical store. Just keep the system(s) and games that you have. One to play while the other(s) as backup. Usually I bought backup systems at a very low price tag. I have about 2 NES, 2 SNES, 3 Genesis, 2 Saturns/1 Japanese Saturn/4 ps1, 2 N64, 5 ps2 (which I store ps1 console away because of BC), 4 ps3, 2 360, 4 GC, 2 xbox, 2 DC, 3 wii, 2 wii u, 2 xbox one, 2 ps4, 4 switch, 1 ps5. Plus the fact that I put away NES, SNES and Genesis and use the retro Trio instead to save space and connection and use Everdrives to play most retro games. One system fail and I have a replacement ready. I usually buy backup systems at a relatively cheap pricetag like I bought 2 GC systems for a mere $30. That was around 2017/18 before every video games exponentially rise in price. When no one wants them, i come in to scoop it up. Ive been collecting since NES days and knew beforehand that RPG would be hot in the future. That was my recollection in the mid 90s where I try to buy as many RPGs as I could. So most of the highly wanted RPGs, I already got. There are unknown RPG that barely anyone talk about like Beyond the Beyond (1st RPG on PS1) and Jade Cacoon. Almost everyone talk about how great Final Fantasy Tactic is but to me, it's okayish. Dragon Force on Sega Saturn to me is the best tactical, real time strategy game. It has 7 story mode including unlockable. If the same 2 game is on 2 different systems, it can link together and have a major battle arena in real time.
