Comic relief characters are designed to lighten the mood during otherwise scary or serious games, but there's a fine line between funny and so irritating you want to bundle said character into a rocket, point it directly at the sun and start the launch procedure. Honestly, once you realize that Alan can be a rather moody, nasty and self-destructive person, Barry's behavior starts to make a lot of sense. Especially the second game makes it very clear that Alan isn't necessarily likable and that Barry probably put up with a lot more managing him than he perhaps should've.

As much as he seemed like an annoying asshole at the start, I grew to love Barry throughout the first game, especially when the genuine, heartfelt moments kick in and he shows that he's a true friend to Alan. I mean there's a point where Alan even tells him to get out while he stays behind to save his wife and Barry is like "Nah bro, I'm staying with you." Just goes to show how the ones you can truly count on aren't always the best mannered people.

The fact that the characters in-game find Wrench annoying is what saves him, to me. He's an actual person without social skills trying to fit in with his found family through pop culture references and bad puns.

I think it's kinda fun that all the comments I can see right now are just people expressing that they actually like one of these characters. One man's boot into the sun is another man's funny little guy and I think that's cool

Comedy is very subjective. Writing comic characters is definitely more of an art than a science.

I actually view Roman as a huge triumph of character writing for Rockstar. I hated him from the moment I met him. As I got drawn into his self-made problems, I'd have been happy to leave him to fend for himself. But when he loses his cab depot due to Niko's recklessness (Niko antagonises the first main villain because he's too arrogant to suppose there could be consequences, and said villain firebombs the place in retaliation), he is nearly in tears as he explains everything that went into it, and then Niko ruins all of it in a matter of weeks. At the griefstricken words "I slept under my desk for a YEAR!" I suddenly wasn't viewing Roman as an oblivious idiot anymore, a dead weight and an obstacle to my (Niko's) goals, but as a person, and I felt terrible for him. I grew to genuinely enjoy hanging out with Roman, started to actually find him funny, and want the best for him. In the game's final branching path, I couldn't bring myself to make the decision that hurts Roman even though it is provably the canon ending - I chose the option that benefits him. Quite a slow burn of a transformation over the course of 100+ hours!

How is that ending provably canon? I thought Rockstar went to great lengths to avoid setting a particular ending as canon when referencing GTA IV in later games.

@dominateeye Sorry autocorrect, that was meant to say "probably." But, back in the day, people would say that Deal made more sense because we have more of a relationship with Roman than with Kate so it makes a better story, and more history with Rascalov too so he makes a better final antagonist. Just yesterday I read a thread that suggests that most people nowadays consider Revenge canon, though! Revenge does make sense because it gives Packie a reason to have up and moved to LS (though you could also argue that he doesn't need one). You're absolutely right though, they did take pains to keep it ambiguous.

When I saw Roman in the thumbnail, I knew for sure there wasn't going to be good justification for his spot. It's been ages since I played, but it's very obvious he's just trying to survive and using humor to cope with the stuff he's going through. He's a good character.

Alan Wake's Barry Wheeler was on the list as well. While he looked super annoying at start, he believed in Alan, helped him, trusted him, and the more I got to know about Alan, the bigger ordeal it looked being able to tolerate him. After you play enough and start to leave the "I'm the protagonist, and the protagonist is right" mentality, Berry becomes one of the few grounded, familiar, helpful island of peace and hope in the darkness of the game.

I only got annoyed by the bot in 3 for both the writing(like everyone else) and that it wasn't the same VA playing him with it really telling by the first words coming out of Claptraps voice box.

Borderlands 1 and 2: he was a great character I enjoyed, with a certain amount of depth (depending on how charitable you want to be). There were few missions you needed him for, and they didn't keep him around in them for long, juuuust long enough to annoy, but not irritate, like on his birthday. The Pre-Sequel and BL3: AWAY ANNOYING ONE TO JOIN YOUR CANCELLED LINE OF BROKEN BRETHEREN! Bad writing, one-dimensional characterization, change of voice actor and completely changing his attitude ruined it for me. The film: my prediction is that it will bomb, and bomb hard. Far too many famous people in there for it to be actually good and even more fans of the game (myself included) that are way too picky about what goes in and is left out, especially cannon (even if it's an alternate universe). If they're lucky it will be "so bad it's good", but all things considered it will not make back its budget in theatres because it's too expensive to go (nearly $40CAD for one adult) and we're infinitely patient and will wait until it's "free" on a streaming service.

Honestly, I genuinely _liked_ Wrench. It’s fine if you disagree, I can get how his quipping might grate, but... I dunno, I just resonate with socially-awkward, arguably-twinkish goofballs who use dumb jokes and comedy voices as a tension-breaker. _...Yes,_ Wrench was basically _me_ in college. DedSec is equal parts hacktivist collective and makerspace, and the latter's kind of the natural habitat for oddball engineers and neurodiverse tinkerers -- I spent a lot of time in the workshop on campus over the decade I was taking classes.

There's actually a guy on TikTok whose videos are basically Wrench acting out comedy scenes (The channel is called 'The Unforsakens'). I usually wouldn't find such stuff funny, but his cartoonish body acting and sense of timing really make it work.

HE was also ACTIVELY HELPFUL once he understood and believed what was going on. You never had to worry about him, he gave alan a tether back to reality, and his emotional scenes (even in AW2!) is surprisingly sincere.

It says something that half the comments I'm seeing are about how much they loved Barry, and even though I haven't played Alan Wake again since its original release, my initial impression of seeing him listed here was "Barry was great though". Like, he wasn't always funny, but he was still a good character and nowhere near as annoying as most comedy relief characters are.

Yeah!!! My guy is one of the best friends in videogames, he goes out of his way to help Alan, and if you've played AW2 you know he was an amazing friend to Alice after Alan's disappearance even if they didn't like eachother.

So true... I played through nearly the whole game (maybe I did the whole thing?) before getting distracted. Years later, after playing through WD Legion & sticking with it to the entirely too predictable ending, I decided to go back to WD2 & realized I didn't remember a single darned thing about the game other than the name of your character, & Wrench's annoying bro-ness. I definitely played it all the way through that time, but can't remember any details about it.

I thought Wrench was all right. It's been a few years since I played WD2, and I kinda miss its vibe. San Francisco was such a fun open world to drive around in, and the game felt less cynical than GTA5, which never really worked for me.

Tbf I didn't play Watchdogs 2 (and some of the jokes I have seen definitely don't work) but you can't deny that Wrench has a great design. I've seen at least half a dozen people on TikTok attempt to imitate and replicate his mask, and it is the perfect accessory for any sufficiently quirky near-future sci-fi character.

I think the problem is one that a lot of characters in games shooting for some comedy have in the past 5 -10 years or so. Where they just keep talking and hope that a random stream of conscious will eventually become funny. Like a bad improv night. Sometimes it results in a good line or 2 and if you are lucky that is what sticks with you. Actually experiencing the entire thing as a whole however can get pretty grating

I'll agree with this entire list except I will not tolerate *any* slander towards the sweet bean that is Wrench. He's an actual fan favorite character who not only came back in Watch Dogs Legion DLC "Bloodlines" but is the only character I've seen from the entire series get multiple cosplayers recreate his look! Seriously, Wrench is the best.

He's just any modern slop "quirky" character who wouldn't be out of place in the Saints Row reboot. The only reason people like him is because he's the only one in the entire WD2 cast with a modicum of personality.

Obligatory Oblivion suggestion: the Adoring Fan. His dialogue is very annoying and is the most useless "companion" in the game; your "reward" for completing the arena questline. He is easily killed BUT he is a respawning NPC and most players would kill him while he was a follower so he still tagged as your follower. This combination of conditions means when he respawns, he usually jumpstares players with his very sudden re-appearance, usually with a line about why did you do that for?

I recognize it as opinion, not fact, but it is mine. I will die on the hill that Kevin Conroy is the best Batman and every other good Batman has the asterisk: Will Arnett or Adam West as the best _funny_ Batman, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, or Michael Keaton as the best _live action_ Batman, as two examples of what I mean by "asterisk"

Except _BTAS_ came out before _Batman Begins_ and even though Kevin Conroy (RIP) continued to voice Batman in various media following that, I think we can all agree that none of them were the *same* Batman as the one the animated series gave us.

Shaun Hastings. Assassin's Creed series. I'm not sure if he's meant to be comic relief, but his smarmy British accent leads me to believe he is. The guy's a jerk for no reason as soon as he meets you and always acts superior to you, thinking he's better than you knowing things about this secret organization you just found out about.

Until he writes a better ending for Game of Thrones, I'm blaming HIM for how the show ended. He promised the writers that he would finish his books, and they would never have to make up anything... he lied. They did fine adapting until there was nothing left to adapt! (Not perfect, but adequate) GRRM abandoned them, and now they get all the hate instead of where it truly belongs! GRRM gave them brief plot points (like Arya killing the Night King, Dani going mad, and Bran becoming the new king) without any context or character development and then left them in the cold to try to fumble out of it. I bet he will NEVER finish his books because he doesn't know how to make those ideas narratively satisfying now that the internet has spoken out against them, but he has no new ideas to replace them either. So he will let Bennioff and Weiss be the scapegoats and hide comfortably in his golden palace, promising a satisfying ending he has no intention of delivering, while people still herald him as a genius.

@@mathsalot8099 There's lots of blame to go around; Bennioff and Weiss were shit pretty much whenever they changed anything (even when they had future books to reference to know _why_ the change was stupid it didn't stop them) and, just as important, they damn well proved they were shitty storytellers by what they did put on the screen once the leash started to run out. Martin is also blameworthy for failing in his repeated promises, both implicit and explicit, to continue (and finish!) the story, no doubt. _Maybe_ he could have saved the show; maybe not, but D&D damned it.

I loved Barry. His Christmas lights were always funny and I really enjoyed him roasting Alan when he got too moody and broody. I like Alan quite a bit as a character, but he definitely takes himself too seriously. Barry evened that out a lot, and I felt humanized Alan a lot.

The constant "talk till you become funny" attitude of Borderlands was off putting enough, then I met Claptrap and within 20 minutes had uninstalled the game. If I ever go back to play that game (which is fun enough), I'll definitely be playing it on mute. Possibly with the Oxventure playlists playing instead for actual comedy gold.
