First off, an exciting update before the description of today's video ...
This past year, my team and I embarked on studying the effects of my SmartBody SmartMind (SBSM) curriculum with a group of our students. The results thus far have been positive, and have shown exactly what our participants have been anecdotally sharing with us over the years, and that is that: this work, in the format we’ve created via my online courses, helps to build greater nervous system resiliency, enhance mindfulness, self-compassion, as well as decrease symptoms of anxiety, and much more. While we can't share the specific data points quite yet, I wanted to share this little tidbit as it is very exciting to see anecdotal evidence line up with research-based evidence!!
And on that note of having success when it comes to increasing nervous system regulation, and all that it brings, THIS WEEK’S NEW VIDEO is all about the habits that my students do that get them there. When I started the work (SBSMer), I was in a REALY bad codition with my CPTS, and I am getting better than I was my whole life. My relationships are transforming and the way I see myself and life is transforming. I am still a mess, but I know I will get better and better with time and practice. I did too have setbacks, and I have days when I am depressed, or strongly anxious, but every time I get up, I reclaim a piece of myself and my health back. So here are some advices from me: Don't beat yourself up for not being there yet. Put your focus on the good things you have acomplished through the work. Keeping a journal helps a lot. Use all the resources you have as much as you need and be kind and patient with yourself. For some of us this in itself will be a thing to learn, but it happens. Do little bits when you can't do more and celebrate it. Kind wishes to you all.

Thank you for this assuring message. I have completed your 21 day programme a few months ago while undergoing cancer treatment and am finding that out of all healing modalities (I do daily meditation, Qigong, yoga, Shiatzu), basic orienting works the most magic for me.. And it's so so simple to do. My levels of anxiety have come down, PTSD after the sickness is getting better, although I find I still need at this point to supplement with e.g. GABA... I hope it's only temporary. I wish everyone strength and resilience- we all have it in us to get thru and heal... Blessings to all

This video is such a beautiful thing for me to have stumbled upon tonight. I have participated in 2 rounds of SBSM so far. I am doing it under less than ideal circumstances - but YES I am doing it anyway. I laugh because all day today I would catch my body tensing up even though nothing outside the ordinary was happening. I simply couldn't seem to connect to the world today as well as I connected yesterday. But I know that yesterday was a particularly successful day for me, so tonight I'm just going to watch my favorite show with my cat on my lap and do the dance again tomorrow 🐱❤

I dont identify as a victim even though i was really victimized, but i allow myself to experience and process some of the feelings of grief abandonment, rage , or whatever. Im not a victim im almost 3 years into my healing journey but i do speak about what happened accurately. And i havent fully processed everything, so im bound to still have some feelings and emotions about it, in a support group/ meeting for survivors of childhood trauma, etc. Its ok to have feelings about it and let them be there as long as they need to. That said im not stuck i am almost 3 years into my healing journey and looking to process my childhood trauma and keep regulating my nervous system to keep bettering my chances to thrive

I am weakest right now in #3, it is hard to feel that i am truly "worth it" or "worthy" of a better life. (I don't think most people in my life would think i am not worthy, but that's different. And my parents were kind, it is not about my childhood but my own weaknesses.). I hope that by working on the others, i will come to be stronger in this area.

Very helpful and you hit a point with this learning to be a supporting person for myself when I fall of the wagon instead blaming myself on top. I have learned so much to be a better mom to my son. And i use these learnings now to be a kind supporter of my own.

I've kinda started all this on my own. Well, with the help of God of course I just got back ta basics. I watch a lot of Childhood Fairy and she mentioned you. This is probably what I need cause I have been doin all of these just wantin ta get better. I am a stone hard believer that God will if I will and I can because of God's Will. THAT previous sentence I created from inside and tells me I'm doin better. I will watch more of your videos. Thank you so much fer ya content and help. Be Good, Be Loved n Be Blessed

Needed this reminder, Irene. I started SBSM last year but I had to stop in Lab 4 because I was feeling overwhelmed and felt the pace was a bit too fast for me at the time. I still orient every day, even those micro-moments you talk about while I'm walking my dog, or doing the dishes, or driving. And that has helped tremendously. My anxiety was at a constant 10 and now it stays at a 2-3, with momentary spikes when intrusive thoughts (of PTSD and/or OCD nature) make an appearance. I was waiting for the next SBSM to start to join the entire group, but after your words, I think there's not a better day than today to re-take the course. I feel I can take on more now thanks to those initial four labs. Thank you :-)

Yes!!! Go ahead and begin again - each time I hit a lesson that felt overwhelming I just went back to the first lessons. I have participated in SBSM twice, but I have started over about 6 times 🤣

I find it weird when people say to hold onto an object that makes you feel safe. My brain doesn't understand how an object that has no capacity to interact with you can make you feel safe. The only thing that can make you feel safe is: good relationships. Period. Everything else is useless. I have CPTSD. I just changed into a new job in the corporate world because I couldn't live paycheck to paycheck anymore. The people in this environment except.for a few are super cold and don't care about you. I used to work in a hospital for 5+ years. I was happier working at my last job at the hospital and started feeling like I had a sense of self because of the relationships I had there. Now that's gone. I work from home. And I'm miserable.all.over again. No object will make me feel safe. Being in this quiet by myself in my apartment is horrific. And don't tell me to go to a cafe. I need to work in an environment where I know people and they care about me and me about them that's the only thing that will regulate me. I am questioning if I made the right choice. I feel so sad.

Try buying a smooth rubbing stone. They are inexpensive. You grab it when you having difficulty and rub it with your thumb. It helps many.

Try the self havening technique with videos on youtube. I do that when im triggert and it helps a lot.

As a student it has definitely been my experience that all my beautiful practices from Vedic Chanting to traditional prayer ~ are a whole new, delicious version of themselves with more regulations on board. I found pure focus on this work for a period of time initially ~ was really important too.

I am having a seriously hard time with my son who is struggling with his own nervous system, and I am trying everything, and I’m a single Mom, and he is becoming more and more challenging as each day progresses. You are a great mom! I have some suggestions. Be the model for him in your behavior. Get him the help he needs. If you don't know what he needs, lead with love and compassion and the same for yourself. Not easy but possible. Keep going. Best of luck!

Just think how challenging your own feelings are, imagine how intens they are for a child. It has helped me become a better mom, by understanding how the brain works and also study everything about child development. If we need change, it always starts with us as the adult.

Thanks so much Irene. Much of what I have done for many decades has helped and couple of years ago came to awareness my autonomic nervous system was too reactive . Now what to do about this? Then the Universe brought me your work on the vagus nerve , etc. Your steps clearly indicate more work is needed on body awareness . Much gratitude from this senior searcher for holistic health .

Thank you for this short breakdown of how to do the work to heal the nervous system. I am truly thankful to have found your channel. You do amazing work in explaining and giving practical information. It has helped me a lot in understanding what was going on in my whole body/system and being able to work at it. You are much appreciated! ❤ I have a small request/question. Not sure if you are in to spiritual (healing) practices like ancient Indian practices/ energy work like meditation, (jnana) yoga, advaita vedanta or plant & other nature medicines (ayahuasca, psilocybin, kambo, etc.). But I was wondering if you have experience with these modalities if you could do a video on this or if you could do a podcast with someone who has experience with this (perhaps a healer). Our ancestors have been using these techniques for thousands of years and they still practice it mostly outside western countries and were much more aware, grounded and connected with nature. And now we are so traumatized and living in such a fast past that our nervous system is overloaded. I have been doing these type of healing methods and in combination with your work, things make so much sense.

Generally speaking, the way one responds to different practices (including ancient practices and plant medicines will depend on their unique history, nervous system, and biochemistry. One theory we have is that when the ancients were teaching these practices, people lived in nature, in tribes/community, and generally speaking were entering into these practices with a higher state of baseline regulation than many people doing so today may have. 9:47 i genuinely can't, i don't live in the US, i don't have friends or support groups here, my family hates me and i tried joining places and i got 10x more triggered, people to me are unsafe, the world outside is terrifying, i've been isolated for 4 years and i never find support no matter how i try, i don't go to school or work or even have money, everytime i try to heal myself i end up more messed up.

Thank you for this! 16:05 I am one of the 21-day + SBSM students who decided to start practicing even though I was in a very toxic environment. Once I got out of the toxic environment, I focused on the practice daily. However, when the SBSM program ended, I found myself slowly doing less and less of the work, especially when I was away from home. I do not have a supportive person as a resource. After the past five years of experiencing failure after failure, I'm struggling with confidence, mostly due to attempting things much above my abilities. I am naturally a pretty confident person and do not recall having the pain of failure in my (adult) past. I rarely did not overcome my failures. However, the history you describe was something I did experience as a child. I do get the feeling that I'm deserving of healing. However, instead of having the voice in my head telling me I'm not worthy of healing, it says; instead, I cannot succeed at this (guilty of #7). Having confidence in myself to be able to succeed at things is lacking. The pain of failure is very severe and very difficult to overcome for me right now. Based on this information, I wonder, am I identifying as a victim? I do not feel this is true, but maybe this is my blind spot? I believe I have checked all of the other boxes (other than #7) otherwise.

Hi RTB PHX, Jen here from Team Lyon. You're definitely not alone in doing less of the work outside of when SBSM is running live. You shared that you have the thought that you "cannot succeed at this". It's easy to get caught in the thoughts, and in this work as we grow capacity different layers emerge. Often as a new layer emerges, our self-protective patterns can also come up. Thoughts are often an effective way to distract from what we're feeling. If it resonates, you might apply what you're learned in SBSM and bring some curiosity to what is happening in your body when/just before these thoughts arise. On a practical note, you might also consider going through the 21 Day Course as it's more contained and there are people in there asking (and answering) questions year round. Asking for a buddy on the SBSM might be another idea worth considering. It doesn't sound to me like you're stuck in victim mentality - you're out here learning, questioning, engaging - and I'll link to another of Irene's videos in case you'd like to learn more about this. I am presently on a psych ward due to experiencing so much intense anxiety for months etc..l come from an alcoholic family & suffered abuse of power & sexual abuse by a therapist I came to trust. It's just that I'm In severe somatic pain intestinally aside from MY IBS that it's crippling & had sought help previously but no one understood or could help me with my 'physical' complaint s. Would do anything to stop the intense pain that prevents me from functioning. Lying down too much bc it even hurts to sit in a chair. Do a lot of meditations but nothing works. Hope it's not too late for me to find some freedom from within..

I regret marrying my former husband, having a son who is even more negative and paralyzed as his father. I never remarried because my son made sure he was obnoxious enough to push them out of my life. I’m 69, have severe Lyme infections, autoimmunes, that I control with my diet, and they are living in my house because my ex hasn’t finished his house, has no furniture, and only one bed. Dysfunctional! I can’t even have a relationship!

Can stress, trauma, cptsd cause chronic skin issues? I want to live a happier life but more then anything I want clear skin. I'm 36 and I've had different skin issues my whole life. But the skin issues change which make me realize I'm creating them as opposed to something being wrong with my diet. I am an organic regenerative farmer I eat a very good diet. I exercise appropriately. Just realized recently I have nervous system imbalances. A lifetime of stresses but originated from childhood abuse that I was just made aware of. Feeling overwhelmed and almost wanting to give up. So grateful for any advice/ recommendations.

Hi Frequency Keeper, Seth here with Team Lyon. Yes, unresolved trauma and nervous system dysregulation can certainly cause skin issues, in fact that was one of Irene's main symptoms. This can be because of elevated cortisol levels, autoimmune conditions, gut problems, hormonal issues, and more... all of which are commonly rooted in unresolved trauma.

@@_._.Ripple_._. - Seth again. Yes, if you know that you have unresolved trauma, then the best place to start is by beginning the work, and there are many ways to do that. You can just keep watching and learning here for a while, or you could try out some of Irene's free resources to get a sense of the work itself, and her teaching style. If that resonates then you could enroll in one of her online programs, or if you prefer, seek out a practitioner to do one-on-one work with. I'll put links for all of that below. One thing to keep in mind - this work is NOT about resolving specific symptoms. Meaning - there is nothing in there like, 'do this exercise for this long, and your skin will clear up', that's just not how it works. Doing this work means learning about your nervous system in great depth, how it speaks, how to listen to it, and how to work with that in relationship to the environment you are in. And it's about doing that consistently, day in and day out, such that you develop an entirely different way of being. Hi Brett Cherry, Jen here from Team Lyon. The process would be much the same - as take steps to grow regulation and capacity, we feel the underlying emotions, sensations, images, movements, and more. We also follow our impulses, which may or may not include taking action in the world.

Hi Joseph Murphy, Jen here from Team Lyon. I understand the first part of your question and am not sure I understand the second part and I'll give it a shot. When we want science and time alone, sometimes we may need time to be with ourselves, and/or to reduce external stimulation. Other times, we may not have much access to the ventral vagal part of the nervous system, which is the part that supports social connections. When we don't want to focus and feel resistance, this could be because we have excess sympathetic nervous system activation in the system, it could be because doing a practice would bring us into contact with uncomfortable or unfamiliar feelings, and it could be because we need to grow more capacity before exploring internally. If you haven't yet seen Irene's free Healing Trauma video training, you might check it out as she provides a lot of related background in that series. I sometimes feel "fated" to be forgotten and unfortunate. I forget that it's in my power both to change that and make peace with it. For me it's a sign that I'm getting depressed.

Hi Erin, Seth here with Team Lyon. Always identifying with ones problems instead working to find solutions, feeling that it's hopeless, feeling that there's no point, it's too late, etc... Often thinking about how others have wronged you, about how life is just unfair, etc... those are the kind of mental representations. Physically speaking, those trapped in a victim mentality almost always have a slumped posture, shoulders rounded forward, generally collapsed and lacking vitality - though there can be other causes for those physical attributes as well.

Kaitlyn Miller, Jen here from Team Lyon. The short answer is to take steps to learn about working with the nervous system as the patterns underling victim mentality live in the body. Learning about the nervous system, the way we get stuck in different states - and the way these can impact they way we see and feel about ourselves - can go a long way towards helping us to understand what's happening and start to meet ourselves with compassion. Alongside the education, bringing nervous system based practices into our lives teaches us to meet ourselves in different ways and to discover new possibilities - as we do, the victim mentality starts to transform.
