As someone who lives on a very tight budget, I would suggest people get snakes rather than lizards as lizards require more items and food, of snakes I would suggest getting colubrids(king, corn, bull etc). I think people see the fancier enclosures and automatically assume that they have to have the same thing, my snakes have bedding, climbing sticks and a hide, your tank doesn't need to be fancy and look like a mini-forest. Another way to get items is to dumpster dive petsmart/petco, Sticks and certain rocks from pesticide free parks can be washed and baked in the oven. Hides are another thing, reptiles will use anything, you can give them a spaghetti box and they'll use it. Imo if you're on a tight budget you shouldn't even consider getting a pet however most snakes a better suited for a budget life than others.

Good tips. Two things though, it's well documented that rocks can "explode" (Shatter violently more correctly) when boiled or baked. If they contain air pockets or water pockets these can expand more than and faster than the rock around it causing it to shatter. Rocks from waterways are more prone to this, cub scouts and the like are taught early not to use rocks from a waterway around a fire, most people will have seen cracked rocks around a campfire. The other thing is that most often nursery plants simply have white oil on them to make them shine and to deter insects, it is best to wipe large leaves where possible. There is the risk that other pesticides may be present but usually a plant needing such treatment will not look good enough for display anyway, so the production nursery won't sell them until they have recovered. Having worked in both production nurseries and retail nurseries I can say that usually retail nurseries don't spend money on treating plants apart from a spray of white oil to make them look good, pesticides are more likely to be used in production nurseries and the plants will be withheld from sale until new foliage has grown.

I literally spend all my extra income on my babies. I can't say no to a new hide or cage upgrade for my reptiles or new chew toys for my rodents. I have no self control. 😭
