Are you a guitarist looking for a new instrument to master? Maybe you've picked up a resonator or a 12-string, but have you tried a banjolele or a banjitar? How about a lap steel? There are so many stringed options out there, so why not check one (or more) of them out?

The Fishman Tripleplay was the most value added tool to my collection of gimmicks. I never understood soft synths, and never really wanted to incorporate a computer into my guitar rig. But the more I became comfortable recording audio, the more the FTP was cherished. All of the velocity and timing unique to a performance is captured faithfully. No programming required. Just play and record.

I actually tried out mandolin for a while, bought a cheap Epi a-style. Also had a 12-string electric (Charvel Surfcaster), which I had to sell when the wife lost her job. :( Still sad about that. Now I’m fiddling around with keyboards as I’m trying to get my daughter into learning how to play music, and figure it’s easier on her little fingers (she’s 6) than a stringed instrument... plus they say if you can play piano you can play anything.

The featured resonator only has one cone. The first ones had three and are called tricones. The single cone was a depression-era adaptation that was played by many seminal blues artists.

Another option for exploring a different tone: fretless guitars. I'm sure as hell getting an acoustic fretless for Christmas, the only one available even, if I did my research correctly. Anywho, these are some neat ideas. I'm nowhere near exhausted from playing regular guitars, but now I just feel the urge to try these out, too.

Don't forget, by Nashville stringing a normal guitar and putting it into an altered tuning you have a whole nuther thang. Mandolin is another good source of different-think. There are variations on the general idea: baritone, bouzouki, etc. And if you want to go even farther afield, get hold of a charango.
