Thanks so much Warren for putting out soooo much info on your channel. I would say it is the same for many of your other subscribers as it is for me, in that, it's really great to get such well informed, practical and usable ideas from a pro producer like yourself, again, really appreciate the time you take to put out all the varied videos which cover so many aspects from, mixing with plugins, DI info, amps and amp miking, mics used within vocal recordings, be it dynamic, condenser, ribbon and the specified areas of mixes, be it toward drums, guitar, bass, vocals or the overall mix itself. I'm spending a lot of time getting a handle on my own projects and it's going great, but always nice to have someone in the know like yourself to open up the ideas further with regard to what else can be done. Also, big fan of the studio tours!!;-) Thanks again and all the best to you and yours.

I only have a Peavy Viper tube 120 watt. and thought miking was only good w/high gain for best sound. BUT, i followed instructions to the tee and only used a master volume of 2.5w/condenser mics and OMG the tone was much better than DI ! Thanks Warren.(ps..Warren also has great bass recording and mixing tuts too)

For me, my tone is from pedals. I got rid of the amp altogether. Live and in the studio. I run my pedals into a focus rite pre amp. The trick is that I use a Roger Meyer voodoo vibe. I send its AMP 2 output to a second DI Live and in studio. Now I have one PA speaker for the audience and one for me and my drummer to hear (we use looping so we need it to hear very well). The "stereo" effect of having two "amp speakers" (PA speakers in this case) is 10x more satisfying than any amp i ever played since i was 12 years old. I can have the speakers up on 6 foot stands so Im not blowing the audience out with guitar (its above their heads this way). That VOODOO VIBE though- sounds like a glassy, pristine yet dirty little amp all its own. An EHX POG sounds massive through a PA. I don't think ill use amps any time soon. In the studio I mic the PA speakers with two inexpensive AKG cardioid pencil condensers bc I want the recording to sound just like the speakers sound in my room. Just thought I'd weigh in with my set up. Im proud of it. Been chasing it for 14 years. BTW my vintage cheap Telestar sounds crazy through this rig. Especially with 1k and 400 boosted on the mxd Graphic EQ. Just saying, you can create many tones, or you can buy one big ol fender or fox tone.

The moment you realize that the reason I've always needed some "buttom" and the lovely low mids i missed from the room and the amp is.... You NEED to record back of the amp too.... Doh!! Thx Warren :D Man I feel stupid...

Great videos here Warren! So many options available... any thoughts on achieving crystal-clean shimmery tones with an amp/mic combo? I cant seem to get quite there thru my Fender Champ with my Rode NT 1000. Seems like direct is almost the way to go for those Cocteau like tones?

Actually, i would like to see a video where you tell about different types of microphones, what kinds are better for drums, what better for amps etc. Cause it's kinda confusing when i look at the store and see lots of different mics and i dont what is better for what and why. I have all 4x12 cabs here and Im thinking that I might get a better result with either a 112 or a 212 cab where Miking is concerned. Do you have any advice? I don't play Metal. Im more of a rock player and a clean stratocaster player. My main amp is a Friedman BE-100 (Its amazing). Love your shows.

Have a vox vt40 I’m gonna try this on. Have to keep it low level though. You ever make a video on how to mix real guitar amps recorded at super low levels?

Always preferred micing vox amps at a distance the trademark vox chime really comes through vs close micing

Warren do you have any rules of thumb for reverb on guitar? Do you prefer to add the reverb in the mix or utilize the amp reverb, or both? I have a tube carvin amp I just started mic'ing up with an SM57 (open back so I gotta try the method in the video) and I love the sound of the physical spring plate reverb it has built in so I'll use that lightly when I track, just make sure to not kill it in case I change my mind. Also, since I've been mic'ing up my amp I've also been throwing some blankets over the rig to kill the reflections a little bit-- waiting on some bass traps for my room in the meantime since it's not currently the best acoustic space

Hi Warren! Great video as usual;) One question: what about the volume levels? I hear a lot of guys are recommending to crank up the volume so that the speaker starts to move the air (speaker excursion) and then some are going as far as to go for the cabinet resonance volumes. These are great suggestions. However, I have to record silently at home. I use my Marshall JMP-1 with its cab sim output which isn't too bad, and I have an AMT pedal that sounds reasonably good and has some cool crunch sounds. My idea was to split my guitar signal and feed that to the Marshall and the AMT, feed that in to my TC G-Major for a few effects and record that. Do you have any experience with direct recording?

Do open back cabs lose bottom end in the front or do they just give you more options because of the open back?

First, my compliments on your fine guitar playing! Whether you are playing clean, or dirty, you display excellent technique, and precise playing. You are versatile and well skilled! Very well done! The second point is...the mic technique on open backs was quite valuable. I have a recently acquired Mesa Mark V single 12 inch open back combo, and it just lacks a certain something when I record it using a single mic. If I push it through a closed back Mesa 2x12 it's fat as can be. I will use a pair of 57's on it, and see if I cant fatten it up a bit! I am very grateful for these many video technical videos that offer the insiders tips, as they are borne of experience, and real world trial and error. Thanks again!

Silly question, but I am hitting a wall with guitar tracks/tones. Having trouble deciding which mics to use, how many takes per part, and how many tracks to use per take without mudding up my mix or being left with a mess of guitar takes/tracks.How many mics per take (close and far and what are the distances)? How many takes of a part (i.e. rhythm left and right etc.)I feel that maybe I am overdoing it at times, but then don't want to be in a "should've..." situation. In general with SM 57 , we should point it to the centre of the speaker , the edge or something in between? I worked some time ago instuuos and pointing it to the centre is a no go, the tone sounded like direct line.

Hey Warren I'm new to your videos and home recording. I have a shure sm57 and an MXL 860. I also have 4x12 cabinet for my Mesa Boogie Triple Rect And a 2x12 Crate Combo (open back). How would you recommend using both of these mics and which would be better for recording acoustic guitars. I have classical nylon string acoustics. Thank you.... Ted

For what that room is, it sounds surprisingly pleasing. That C12 is truly nice sounding as well. All of them sounded great though to be honest. What was your signal chain after the mic on this?

Hey Warren. Loving the videos. I have a Epiphone ES335 Pro with ToneRider Pickups. Blackstar HT20 with a Vintage 30 speaker. Play rock music mainly. Use a Klon clone and a tubescreamer a lot. But i'm struggling to get a nice tight rock drive sound. I think it might be the pickups. They were already installed when I bought the guitar. Is there any other pickups you can suggest or is the ToneRider pups fine?

Hey Warren, Great videos! I have been following your instagram for a long time and didn't know you have a youtube channel! I have 1 question regarding multiple miking techniques for guitar amps. How do you deal with the phasing issue if you place 2 microphones at the same time but not at the same place. Let say for example, a SM57 right up the grill cloth and a ribbon mic for the room. How to you blend those 2 signals? I would just align the phase on post/editing instead but Im not sure whether that is the best way to do it. :)

Whenever I have mics right on the cloth - whether SM57 or a ribbon - I get all the spiky string plasticness and pick noise. My preamp, I/O, amp, guitar, everything else is top stuff, but on-cloth mics give awful results for me. I like warmer backed-off ribbon tones anyway, but every now and then I need the hard rock option and simply can't capture it.

I have a presonus m7 large diaphragm condenser mic and it seems no matter how far away or close I out the mic and how low I put the preamp it distorts and is overly bassy. Is my amp just turned up too loud or is my mic defective? I'm just staring out trying to record some tracks and I'm at my first bump already.

Hi Warren... wanted to ask a common doubt.... while tracking guitars with mics, there is always some hiss sound that is tracked.. how to handle it in the mix ?

I use GarageBand. Recording the amp, a small Marshall, I get so much volume,the Amp settings have to be all the way down. I use a Focusrite interface. My question is how do you adjust the interface and the DAW to get a nice sound without the amp turned way down? I'd love to know what can be done and how to not get a very hard and rough recording. Do you use headphones to monitor the DAW live?
