In Europe we actually feel cheated on if there are more than 3 ice cubes in our drink, we're paying for the drink, not for frozen water in it 😂 at least in Greece, especially for alcoholic drinks, you get the ice separately so you can actually see the amount of drink in your glass 👌

I was surprised she didn't mention weddings. Americans spend insane amounts on weddings, and ironically have quite a high divorce rate. I'm not sure of the numbers or statistics are but I know that we spend a huge amount more here than they do many other places. Which is so sad to me, it takes away from what the wedding is supposed to be about and not to mention if people take out debt for a wedding, what a horrible way to start a life together.

As a foreigner living in the US for 20+ years I'm still confronted with many of these issues to this day. I used to live on a super tight immigrant budget for many years making barely minimum wage and -living in one of the most expensive cities in the country- I never went broke, not once, while many of my US-born friends with fancier careers and high-paying jobs were constantly struggling with debt. That's in part due to these spending habits. Gringos have a tendency to spend way beyond their current means and that's mainly because of their reliance on perceived economic stability and the promise (or illusion) of constant growth, basically, they buy things they can't really afford today because they comfortably assume that they'll have money to pay for it (or more) in the future. Foreigners who grew up in countries with volatile economies, insane inflation rates and absolutely no certainty for the future tend to thrive in an environment such as the US because we never fall into those traps.

@Bustermachine
@Bustermachine 3 года назад
@@ddeuerme Good luck with that. Many places set minimum building sizes. Edit : That said, I have the same feeling. Bedrooms don't need to be huge. A separate master bath should be a luxury rather than a necessity. The dining/family room/living room can be easily rolled into a single space (MAYBE a dining space offset from the main room). Weirdly the only area of the house I approve of being fairly spacious is the garage because home ownership comes with a lot of maintenance that having a place to work can be invaluable to long term savings.

Staywithme totally right with that fridge comment. I am currently shopping for a fridge and my first concern is how much electricity it uses and second, how long will it last, not how big it is because if it is oversized, I will be overpaying for it when I buy it and overpaying on electricity every month and with the savings... Well, I can use the savings for.oyher things or even to buy a better brand fridge instead of a huge one from a low grade brand. Another thing I realised is how much bigger fridges are getting. At least here we see more and more huge double door American style fridges. No idea how someone will fill them and must of them, even if they cost the same as small one and spend the same electricity I would still not want one. Too big, use too much space on a Kitchen.

So I have a story for you. We just replaced our refrigerator a few months ago. The one prior to that, we purchased in may of 1990. in the 28 years we owned it, we never had to have it repaired. When we purchased our new refrigerator the old one was still working but we were worried that it was about to come to the end of it's life so we did have to replace it But I have to say as far as people just wanting to replace their appliances instead of having them repaired is not completely true in every case. Take for instance our washing machine, we purchased a new washing machine and bought a five year warranty a year later it stopped working and we tried for three months to get someone to come out and repair it but it turned out that the warranty that we had purchased through Home Depot there were no repair people in our area to come out and repair it so Home Depot just replaced it for free. When we bought a new dishwasher in the first year it had to be repaired three times finally six months later we had to replace it. If these manufacturers would just make reliable appliances that actually don't need to be repaired every 30 or 60 days maybe people wouldn't have to replace their appliances

It is easier to go to vacations in other countries for Europeans.The next country is only a short distance away. You can cross Germany from north to south in one single day. Beeline is 876 km (544 miles) from north to south and 640 km (398 miles) from east to west. If we want to make a fancy vacation in a different country we are all near the border. And we don't have to change money since many countries here have the Euro.

Chelsea, I will agree with most of these, however, when, for example, a sewing machine repair shop tells people they will NOT repair a well known and affordable machine brand, then the consumer of a reasonably priced machine is forced to chuck it when they can’t get it maintained or repaired. I have one machine (high priced brand) but wanted to add a moderately priced machine that did a lot more. I talked to the repair service where I bought (and maintain) my high priced machine. I was told they wouldn’t touch the cheaper one and to throw it away! So even if you’ve a mind to keep your equipment in good working order for longer, you might be amazed to find yourself stymied at every turn. Hi wages have environmental impacts. We throw away much more than we used to because its too expensive to fix them. Or, from another angle, the cost of building/making things has come down in a global market, so we throw away much more. The value of worker's time in both situations relative to the value of goods is distorted because we externalize (don't pay for) costs to the planet and to our future selves.

@LancesArmorStriking
@LancesArmorStriking 6 лет назад
CatEyes1993 Part of it is that most of America actually had pretty low property value on account of there being nothing to do there. Most of the U.S. is just cookie-cutter suburbs with nothing that adds value to the area. Additionally, most houses here are cheaply built, out of fiberboard (compressed sawdust) and chicken wire, so not only are the walls thinner, allowing for more space, but they're easier to build. On one hand, that adds to the economy; on the other, it means a 100 year old building is almost unheard of, because nothing lasts that long. Cost per use goes down the older the house gets, but because they keep eroding, we just keep building new ones, with even fewer materials.

With all of the different options available in grocery stores I thought that people must be eating the largest, most diverse variety of foods today than ever before. But then i realized that people most likely just do what i do and buy the same stuff every week. So eating only what's in season will actually add variety to peoples diets, which i think is important. So maybe it's healthier to eat what's in season

*I feel like the appliance repair industry has been disappearing because our cheap, throwaway appliances are cheaper to replace than repair. A drop in the industrial bucket of a massive factory/supply chain complex vs. a valuable chunk of skilled laborer's time. A serious sustainability problem, no doubt, but I question whether there is a significant effect on the wallet.*

most electronics today (including big stuff like cars) are constructed in a way to prevent you as a consumer from being able to easily disassemble and fix it. for example, my old skoda car has quite a simple construction. it's 16 years old. I can take my tools and go fix most of the problems myself because i can actually disassemble and then assemble it. no problems at all. but when we look at the modern cars, they all have that electronic stuff inside which requires some highly specific and costly tools. this is made on purpose, so you don't even try to fix your car yourself - you go to a car service. with cheap electronics, like mixers for example, the manufacturers don't even wanna bother with repairing capability. they just make these things one-time use (almost). so once it breaks, you just go and buy a new one. the more they sell, the higher the profits. of course i fully support the idea of fixing / repairing things instead of buying new stuff. it applies to shoes, clothes, dishes and whatever in my life. however, the manufacturers do not always agree with me on this.

It is and the way things are made to not be repaired. I have a samsung washer front loader that took a dump on me recently. This model (so I learned) did not come with a drain so I had to use all my towels to soak up the water in the drum before I could even take it apart. Customer service was essentially no help, with determination on watching repair videos on RU-vid I guessed it was the pump. My husband replaced it and miraculously that fixed it. The washer was 10 years old and it would have costed a lot for parts and repair if we had hired somebody. I’m glad we were diligent in trying to diy it.

Jeanette Harvey So ask a friend and buy them a small gift. They'll appreciate it. I have a 'throw-away' friend who has bought 5 dryers in the time I have owned one. Since 1986 I have had to replace the belt twice, costing me under $100. The first time I did it myself - the second time (as I too am disabled), I asked a neighbor and bought them a gift. Saved me many thousands of dollars.

You bring up some excellent points. When I began working as a teacher and living on my own, most of my frugality was based on necessity. During my career I lived beneath my means, saving a lot of money, and not getting sucked into the kind of spending that other people did. I managed to buy a home during that time and I also retired at the age of 56; I'm now in my 16th year of retirement! Great ideas. Younger people need to delay gratification if they want to grow up debt-free and retire at a decent age.

This is why I only buy enough food for about 2 weeks. When I used to buy large amounts because it was on sale or a good deal, it usually ended up getting wasted because it spoiled or expired. My food costs have gone way down now . As many have advised before, stick to the periphery or the grocery store where most of the fresh food is located and not the store aisles. Yes, many of those foods are cheap and look good but when you look at their nutritional value all you're usually getting is salt, sugar, carbs and fat. Frozen fruit and veggies is the usual exception.

Omg the packaged food thing! I'm vegan and I'm having to learn to let go of the junk food prepackaged snacks, I never realized how much, packaged food I ate until 90% of it was off-limits to me. Also, I am a shopper for Instacart, I go buy people's groceries for them, it is INSANE how much, packaged food is in the average grocery cart I shop. A typical grocery order will contain a few fruits and veggies, some raw meat, eggs, butter, and cheese and then everything else will be highly processed and cheap things that people really can make for themselves. Pasta sauce, hamburger helper, pasta boxes, instant meals, Stouffers family dinners, and snack foods galore, not to mention the far, far too common case of bottled water. People don't know how to prepare meals anymore, part of it is time, the economic issues that push people to work 50-60 hours a week keep me shopping and also make it impossible for the same people to find the time to cook. It isn't however just the overworked & underpaid, I've delivered $300 grocery orders to McMansions where the nanny placed and received the order...people don't know how to cook. We've removed classes like home-ec from schools and this has been a major disservice to those who could benefit from learning all the things their parents haven't got the time to teach them. How to cook, how to make your own clothes/goods, how to make your own cleaning products, how to budget for a household, how to make economically sound decisions regarding your home.

so true. I would even say the same applies to having tons of email subscriptions. That being said, I don't have a Hulu, Netflix, CBS, or any other TV or Magazine subscription. Long and short, if you're going to spend the money anyway you can get subscriptions, just be sure its to something that will actually save you money or enough time that it's worth the expense. IE Netflix instead of renting a couple Redbox movies each weekend. Or in my case Amazon Prime, instead of having to pay for shipping or the added time and gas money to go to multiple stores to find what I want for that person.

I agree with most of this. But, not all. My college degree from 1983 is, in some ways, obsolete, but the fundamentals I learned are still very relevant. The other thing is air conditioning... I live in Dallas, Texas, and air conditioning is not a luxury. People here who don't have air conditioning, particularly the elderly, die when we go over 100 degrees, which is every summer. It is like saying people in Maine are wasting money on heating in January. We are a wasteful society, but there is no ONE perfect solution. We need to look at our own lives, and how we live, and come up with individual plans to cut waste from our own lives.

@donttalkcrap

masterbuck404 is correct. For millions of years people have lived in Equatorial zones (Texas is not one - there are hotter places than Dallas), and they have gone without a/c and still somehow survived and thrived. The number of elderly people who die from heat exhaustion amounts to .0003% of the number of elderly who are killed crossing the road each day in the US. In most US households that I've visited, regardless of what month it is, their house is either being heated or cooled by a/c. Yet, in Asia, the Pacific, the Middle East and Europe, you would have realised when you've been there that they only turn it on during EXTREME hot or cold weather. Not 365 days of the year.

The thing is the new technology is DESIGNED to be replaced unlike the older stuff that was meant to be repaired, as people wanted to keep their stuff for longer. The prices of the older items kinda reflect this. The prices are high these days .... mostly because you're paying for the name on the item, but also because the technology itself [probably] costs a lot as well. And because the current technology/products is/are designed to be replaced rather than repaired, there are no good repair shops anymore. What we can do is to try and take as good care as we can of the stuff we buy ,and not give in when the next upgraded model appears on the market 6 months or 1 year later. ;) [i'm looking at you Apple]. Repairing should be an option -like with computers and laptops, but sadly it seems that with phones and other items it's not worth the money.

Eggs can be stored at room temperature, but only for about two weeks after they've been laid, and then you should put them in the fridge too.

A few summers ago I read a book on the fast-fashion problem called _Overdressed_ by Elizabeth Clines (Cline? something like that). It's phenomenal, and it goes into all the stats, laid out in a really easy-to-understand way. It's kind of like that Supersize Me movie you probably had to watch in health class, but for clothes. I basically decided to start making all my clothes from then on out the moment I read the book. Even if you don't know how to sew or can't afford a machine, a lot of fabric stores will hold classes and/or let you use their machines for some amount of time. You can ask a friend, especially one that does reenactment, theatre, or cosplay a lot. And the best part is that handmade clothes are often better-constructed, can be tailored to your body and your style (which makes you feel a lot more confident and lets you express yourself well), and can be made out of natural fibers that don't show up in stores as much. Ditch the polyester for the zillions of cotton varieties available at fabric stores or the linens and silks and wools available (often cheaper online from places like Dharma Trading or Renaissance Fabrics) and make something that's 100% you. I sat down and decided exactly what features my ideal clothes had (fitted top, flowing skirt, for instance), picked a pattern that did basically those things, made a test garment out of muslin (cheap cotton), and edited it slightly to fit me better. Then, I made some alterations to the pattern to create two variations of the dress and turned the muslin garment into a reusable pattern. Now I have a ziploc bag of a couple patterns for dresses and pants sitting in my fabric box to be used whenever I find some pretty cotton to make a new one. I'm hoping to eventually have basically 9 of each, like they suggest for capsule wardrobes, all mix-and-matchable for cold weather.

So dead on. I got shamed for having a 3 year old smartphone recently. I went to purchase a new only because my old one broke. I could care less about what these people think. That's why I can AFFORD my lifestyle and have no bills but typical utilities, a small credit card debt ($635) and housing that costs me $500 a month. I charge most things because I get great cash back money. I go home and pay it off immediately after purchase. And it will be paid off today. Let them laugh, their self worth is defined by the cost of material crap and how much of it they own. That's why I can afford to go to Thailand and China for a couple of weeks soon. I'd rather have experiences than loads of stuff.

Yup same here. We aren't perfect but are getting better at it. We don't make a lot of money, but we bought a small house, don't buy cars every 5 years, and live conservatively so that I can stay home with the kids and we go to the beach and cruises and vacations. Our daily life is different than my family's but every time I turn down a pedicure that's $50 that will be kept to go to our next vacation or whatever we want to do. Also phones, we do get phones about every 3 or 4 years as long as they last.

I'm surprised she didn't talk about all the things we buy like: paper towels, plastic baggies, plastic wrap. We buy these things for convince but you just throw it away. I save 800$ a year not buying plastic wrap, baggies, pads, paper towels and toilet paper ( i use cloth or mason jars), another 400$ in not buying disposable diapers and 1,000$ a year not eating out, about 200$ a year air drying my clothes. I think its wasteful to have 2 living rooms and tiny lawn. I would never want to a house larger than 1,200 ft.

You use cloth toilet paper? Do you find that difficult? Do you have a ton of laundry?
@ah5721
@ah5721 6 лет назад
@@cianap.281 since I cloth diaper it goes with the diapers so only an extra half load of wash. It takes about 10 extra min of my day so it's not a big deal. They are great for colds, cleaning kids and bums. We use a bidet sprayer and it gets the poop off us so the cloth wipes(tp) are pretty much just drying you off. Paper products are very energy and resource consuming to make and remove. The sludge that comes from paper mills pollutes the water and the toilet paper waste has to be removed from the water as well. Either way it's still less pollution using cloth wipes especially if you use a natural plants based deturgent.

Thanks for replying! The bidet/poo situation makes a lot more sense, ok. I never considered that. And yes, paper is very polluting; I used to live near a paper mill, it made the whole town smell like poison.

YES! I stayed with friend for a month and was ASTOUNDED by the amount of refuse produced by wipes (for faces, counter-tops, floors, bums) that get tossed after one use, when, where I am from, we use cloth and we wash it once it's dirty, hang it out, and use it again when it's dry.

This was such an excellent presentation. It is so important to be aware of the larger picture of smaller transactions over time. The way you framed the costs of things on a monthly or yearly basis was eye opening.

Arizona, Texas, California, may be states where AC is needed on a constant basis, especially in summer. But surely some more northern states can afford lowering it a little, or use it less.

Our electric bill is 450$ in August with ac temp. on 79 degrees. But it's a big house. We put solar but it doesn't really save a great deal 😕. But you can't function without an ac here. It's brutal.

Regarding fashion, part of the problem is the drop in the quality of clothing. Clothes used to be made to last, with durable fabrics and good stitching, but nowadays, most affordable clothes are poor in quality. After 'Marie Kondo-ing' my wardrobe and cutting its size by two-thirds years ago, I was shocked by how quickly my much-reduced clothing collection wore out, once I started wearing each piece regularly. It's not easy nowadays to find clothing that's both affordable and long-wearing.

Keeping eggs chilled has to do with washing, if you wash eggs they don't last as long. Keeping milk chilled depends on the pasteurization. Where I live, in Sweden we drink a lot of milk. We don't pasteurize it that high which makes it taste a lot better but is also more perishable.

Because America doesn't have a public healthcare system, you pay TWICE for overconsumption of meat - first at the grocery store, and then again if you suffer health consequences. Reducing meat consumption to the WHO guidelines saves you twice over.

Ok, I agree with you.. sort of. I only really buy and eat organic meat and don’t eat it often. I think this is much better for the world, but it’s still important to support the farming industry and to support the continuing high quality care of these animals. However, you are being very confrontational about it, which will ultimately turn people off to your point. I think you’re going in too hard on this, particularly the health angle.

my time in France greatly changed my food habits too, I go weekly and buy groceries I need or even multiple times a week, it may be wiser to plan ahead food wise more BUT I still keep track of my grocery bill each week buying what I need - I'll stock up on some things; soda on sale, sugar, coffee, etc; but not in huge quantities still

Our refrigerator would stop working then start again on it’s own. This happened twice. I called a repair guy and he said he couldn’t be here for two weeks. I was secretly happy because I wanted a new refrigerator. So I got a new fancy double door refrigerator on top. Pullout drawer freezer, stainless steal refrigerator at $1,500. THE BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY FINANCIAL LIFE!! I wish I would have taken all my food to store at my parents’ and waited for the repairman. Now every time I walk into the kitchen I have to look at this huge monstrosity of a refrigerator that I hate. I feel so ashamed that I wasted that much money. Even if I did need a new refrigerator I could’ve gone with a much smaller, inexpensive one. It’s like a dagger in my heart every time I open it. And I’ve had it since October. What a lesson I learned.
