I was a teenager growing up in the southern side of Praga in the 90's. Those were quite interesting times. I remember being beaten up and robbed on my way to school in bus, i remember being beaten up in park and on the street or at the bus stop. And that was Praga Południe (south) and everything was way much worse in Praga Północ (north). Everything has changed in the last 20 years and i can agree Warsaw now is one of the safest places in Europe.

Preferring country like Poland over place like New York seems to have more to do with preferring Europe over the US in general, while Poland in this case is just a perfect place for someone who expect a mix of the Slavic culture/mentality and Western-European standards.
@ZhovtoBlakytniy
@ZhovtoBlakytniy 2 года назад
New York is not a great representation of the US, but a lot of people feel like it is. I feel more at home in Poland, being born and raised in the rural Southeastern US, than I do in NY and I don't just mean NYC lol that's like being on another planet to me. I don't really like the way things are done in Europe, but I'm also not going to tell them what to do because that's their business... but Poland is just special and lovely. Some of the most kindhearted people I've ever met in my life live there. There's really a special type of Slavic mentality there, not the "I don't care, it's someone else's problem" you see in the East. There's dignity along with the pride. West Slavic, you could say since it's the heart of Europe.

Totally true: when you buy a house in the States: the number one thing you should think about is: location, location, location. The location is not only important for our safety and resell value of your house but also for quality of nearby schools, or even if you have sidewalks or basic public transportation in your neighborhood.
@karo4524
@karo4524 2 года назад
So very true. Unfortunately the funding for our schools here in the States is based on the local taxes. The more affluent the area the better the resources for local public schools. Unfortunately not all schools are created equal here and kids receive different standard of education/start in life depending on where their parents can afford to buy a house or rent an apartment.

Another great episode, James. You remind me about so many things I miss about Poland after 30 years of living in the U.S. My gosh! You're totally right about the produce. Both vegetables and fruit pretty much suck here in the States. Even organic produce is sort of tasteless since it travels long distances before reaching the stores. I've tried purchasing produce at the occasional farmers markets. Still very bland...
@ZhovtoBlakytniy
@ZhovtoBlakytniy 2 года назад
Did you try farmers markets when produce is in season? There's too much imported food in the grocery stores, and you're right it's bland. But I find local and in season much better. Still, the tastiest fruit I've had has been from Ukraine, Poland, and Norway locally and in season. Norwegian farmers told me it's because they ripen slowly in the cooler climate.

High quality videos that bring value to people (whether it's exploring new cities, or just hearing your opinion ) every other day. That takes some serious effort and motivation. Good job 👍 Also, respect for having the balls to speak your mind freely, even though you could be indirectly offending people in the US as well as other parths of the world (oops). I don't blame you at all for choosing Poland over the US, for all the reasons you gave. I look forward to retiring there someday, but for now I will have to be content with visiting every year or two. I've never felt unsafe in Warsaw or Kraków, or any of the smaller cities I've visited, even when walking by myself at night. But in the US, I'm always looking over my shoulder, even in broad daylight. You're also right about public transportation. In Poland, it's fast, clean, affordable, and reliable. In Memphis (the nearest city to me and the place where I grew up), it exists but nobody uses it if they can help it. People in suburbs and rural areas outside the city must have vehicles to get around. And our cities are, without exception, filthy. I am constantly amazed at how clean Polish cities are. Good luck to you and your family and thanks for keeping us posted on your experiences.

Another great thing about Europe in general is that everywhere it’s close. You can drive from warsaw to London in less then 1 day or fly in less then 2 hours for like $20. You can drive to Croatia in 7 hours. You can drive in 1 day to hundreds of cities or 60 countries. Everywhere it’s close. And now that all those Eastern Europe countries are building highways moving around is much quicker. It used to take me 4 hours to drive from my town in Poland to warsaw now it takes 2 hours. Same with the train, it went from 4 hours to 2. You can even drive to Bejing china and lorry drivers frequently do.

I stayed in Krakow after leaving Ukraine and on my last day before going back to the US we stayed in Warsaw. My first impression was that it was a little sketchy looking, a ton of graffiti and litter compared to Krakow and Zakopane, but everyone I see who goes to Warsaw sings praises. I wish I could have stayed longer to get to see it, and honestly have some regrets leaving Poland at all but I wanted to avoid all the legal setbacks since I am a US citizen and Poland is dealing with so many Ukrainian refugees. I really don't want to take a spot from someone who needs it more than we do. Poland is amazing!

A couple of years ago me and my boyfriend visited Paris for a few days to explore. And I felt really scared all the time there. The landlord lady gave us a map and circled the NO-GO areas and said the police is not going to rescue You here. She said also to lock the door with many locks. She said her children are never going outside the house. When we were sighteeing, a group of gypsy children were following us all the time! I felt very unwelcome when it comes to French people. Even the guy in the english information point wouldn't talk to me in English, just in French! All the shops were closed at 7 p.m. with groups of teenagers following your every move. Really, I felt less anxious when we got lost in the night in Budapest and were walking through a dark neighbourhoods with homeless people and gangs around. Hello, James! I just stumbled onto your videos. Great work, especially how you go into details about everyday life in Poland and Warsaw. What's also important is that you have a very good understanding and personal experience living in many different coutries, so your comparisons of Poland to other lands is that much more credible and useful. There are many videos of people raving about their Polish experience but those are mostly based on a short tourit type visit. FYI... I was born in Warsaw and emigrated here (USA) as a kid with my parents. I liven in Anchorage, Alaska, Lincoln , Nebraska, Phoenix, Arizona, Chicago, Illinois (the longest) and Fort Myers, Florida. I've also had the opportunity to travel all over the US and internatonally. I'm retired (kind of) but plan on retiring for good this year and I plan on retiring in Poland!. My wife was born and raised in Chicago and my daugter (attending college) was also born in Chicago. Personally I cannot wait to move, however, my wife is more reserved and woried that she will feel isolated as she doesn't speak Polish. I watch your videos with her to ease her anxiety about living in this new strange land. Keep up the great work! P.S. I would like to establish contact with you if you don't mind. I really enjoy using some older stuff. I still use my older iPhone 4 as an Internet radio player. I've got Macbook 13" Late 2008, a little bit modified with an SSD and a lightweight Linux distribution and I always take it while I'm travelling. It is really sufficient to do all my tasks like checking news, e-mails, or browse and edit my photos. You are a 100% right about almost everything except when it comes to politics. Once you been to Poland longer and pick up the language you will find out that that’s not the case people in Poland are divided just as much as here in the USA if not more right now you can not touch the subject to not to offend people you have to really know who you talking to .Families are divided .When it comes to feel free safe yes you are right I sometimes take the subway to downtown Chicago but always with my husband, the parking in downtown is extremely expensive and I feel not safe on the subways , they are loud dirty, they run slow you are afraid of the people because a lot of them look like they going to rub you which is true every day on the news you hear stories someone was rubbed killed or stabbed on the subway it’s not safe . I would never used one by myself . Like you said in America you need a car you can not do groceries if you don’t own one , every where is to far to walk and you don’t see a lot of people walking sometimes you’ll be the only one walking the street unless you are in Manhattan or downtown Chicago but first you have to get there somehow .oh and you are right tomatoes here taste like plastic check strawberries or raspberries the same . The transportation in Warsaw is awesome the metro it’s beautiful the stations amazing wide .clean the trains run on time every few minutes the trams the buses you can get to the other side of Warsaw in no time. I know that the metro is new not like in Chicago it’s old but they are not doing nothing to improve the conditions ,they changing slowly the trains but they still run slow and loud because the tracks are old .The one thing we do have is Lake Michigan which is beautiful.

I lived over 20 years in the US, and now I've spent over 20 years in Warsaw. I don't have a car here, don't need one - I can walk to lots of shops, restaurants, hair salons, clinics and other places in my neighborhood plus I can use public transport and then walk in other parts of the city. There are even shopping malls inside the city, not surrounded by parking lots, accessible without a car. In most places in the US, you're dependent on a car because the cities are disjointed, i.e. they're not compact and walkable, everything is separated and built with parking lots. (Re politics, Poland is also quite polarized, but that's a lot better than a place like Russia where any meaningful opposition is suppressed or marginalized.)

For me personally war in Ukraine was kinda reset for my mindset and I took a step back on my wievs of politics, but as with most of tragic events this works only for a short while ( similar situation was after Smolensk tragedy, political peace went on for maybe 2-3 months tops)

People who say that Poland is as politically polarized as the US - first of all, in the US there are only two parties. Americans tend to ask each other, are you a democrat or a republican? Whereas in Poland there are several parties to choose from, and even if they all fight each other, I think in the end politics are much more diverse here than in the US.

No, in Poland you have goverment and supporters vs opposition. So you have got right-wingers and left-wingers, like in USA.
@miramari732
@miramari732 2 года назад
There's more than two parties in US, but they are insignificant in "grand scheme of things" (like 1-3% votes); Poland is still more diverse there - we still have some smaller ones that can get into parliament and make some difference, but there's strong (and pretty scarry) push towards US model - here's PiS vs KO instead Dems vs Reps. And everybody knows that "if you don't want to throw away your vote you have to vote one of this two". This mentality is very strong unfortunately.
@marti160
@marti160 2 года назад
It is not right wingers vs left wingers in Poland. But it is PiS vs the rest. But the rest is divided also. Some are socialists others liberals and capitalists. Pis themselves are conservatists but economically socialists. Political spectrum is more diverse and complicated in Poland (one could say confusing) then in US

Poland and the US share the same level of fierceness in the political dispute. These are the last two developed countries that have not yet chosen the path: liberal or conservative. Liberals are growing here and there, but conservatives still have half the voters and can sometimes take power (Trump, Kaczyński). In Poland, emotions related to political differences destroy family ties and friendships. People do not reveal their political preferences for fear of rejection. I wish you never to become a soldier on either side.

I have had duck eggs and I have had allergic reactions I haven't had since I was a teenager. So you may be right about the eggs, also. I could go on about the other topics for a good while. My phone is 6 years old, I think. It's definitely 4G. A few years ago I had to replace my CDMA because they were takiing the towers down and TracFone told me to. I have a 1995 Saturn. It's my second one. The first one was better. I'd really like to have a 1996 Saturn. Cuz that's when they put in the computers that would diagnose what's wrong with your car, and I'd really love to know what's wrong with my transmission. :-) But right now there's a quantum leap marathon on Syfy and I need to not miss all of it.

In Poland and Europe in general you get them natural. I was shocked with the level of basic groceries in US anything of basic European quality is pricey 'organic' there and we are talking about basics, let alone amount of sugar, corn syrup etc. It is really shocking same applies to meats, bread etc.

Unfirtunately, I must say the political polarization is pretty strong in Poland, and even more with the rise of Facebook, so to call it. I think it has much to do with how extreme some political views and really strange ideas get popular, and one of the reasons why far-right party won the elections a few years ago in PL, they were really good at spreading their propaganda on the Internet, while others kind of have only just realised the Interenet existed and never knew how to make use of it.

I saw you were posting a photo with an article about yourself from Gazeta Wyborcza. This particular media is strongly left-leaning, progressivist, currently anti-government. Of course the fact that you were featured there is not anything that would discredit you in the eyes of the right-leaning public, just an interesting trivia :)

Let them live for a month in Poland, with security and your support 😉 but in fact independently. After a month and a few cities, they will know the vibe of Polish life well.
