Healthy lawns usually need to be cut at least once a week. Try to cut only 1/3 of the grass blade off each time you mow to avoid putting additional stress on the lawn.
Mulching when you mow can be very beneficial because it can help recycle nutrients back into the grass. However, mulching over a thatch layer that is too thick can add to the problem. Before mulching, check your lawn's thatch layer to determine if mulching is a good idea. If the thatch layer is less than half an inch thick, then you can go ahead and mulch the lawn. If it's thicker than that, you should dethatch before mulching.

"Today we have some lawn mowing tips for you. Cutting the lawn will put stress on it, but it’s also an important part of keeping your lawn healthy, so the advice in this video will focus on how to help prevent the damage that lawn mowing can do.
1. The first thing you can do is mow at the right time of day. We suggest mowing the lawn in mid-morning, around 10am, before it gets too hot, or in the evening after it starts to cool off because if you mow in the heat of the day, the lawn has to combat stress from the heat and from mowing at the same time.
2. Our second piece of advice is to only mow the lawn when the grass blades are dry. If it rains or the grass is damp from sprinklers, wait until the water dries before mowing the lawn because cutting the grass while it is damp can damage the grass blades.
3. Another thing that can damage the grass blades is mowing with a lawn mower that has dull blades, so you should try to sharpen the lawn mower blades at least once a year to help prevent damage to the grass. This will also help you get a smoother cut when you mow the lawn.
4. The next thing you can do to help prevent damage to the lawn is try to only cut 1/3 of the grass blade off at a time. If your lawn is really long, instead of cutting it short all at once, try to cut it to the desired length in multiple mowing sessions, that way you’ll avoid cutting too much grass at one time.
5. Our next piece of advice is to keep the lawn longer in the summer and shorter in the fall. In spring and summer, you should keep the lawn around 3-4 inches tall to help the roots stay cool. In the fall, you can keep the lawn around 2-3 inches once it starts to cool down. And in late fall (right before freezing temperatures hit) cut the lawn even shorter. We suggest between 2 and 2.5 inches tall. This will help prevent snow mold fungus from developing on the lawn in the winter.
6. Next, we want to talk about mulching. Mulching can add nutrients to the lawn and be very beneficial, but if you mulch too often, it can overload the thatch layer, which should be less than 1 inch thick. If your lawn mower has a mulch setting, we suggest mulching periodically. You should also check the thatch layer every once in a while to make sure the mulch is breaking down.
