I caused one hell of an argument at the course today re match play vs stroke and hitting outside the tee box. Always fun! 🙂

Interesting! I always thought you could only practice putting after a hole in match-play.

Good video. I love matchplay and the different psychological dimensions that it presents. I think it is worth pointing out that the committee is not permitted to hold a strokeplay event and a matchplay event simultaneously - as a direct consequence of the rules variations mentioned.

Indeed - though we've known people try to do it at clubs we've been members of over the years :)

I hate it. Players become strange in match play!

can players actually play in a strokeplay event and match play simultantiously? Are there consquences if they do.

Hi can you ask your playing partner in 4 ball match play not to mark his ball while you put as you may get an in off thanks ..great vid info

I would say no because there is no stroke penalty when hitting someone’s ball with your ball in match play. So if they’re behind the hole you can use that as a stopping board. Hence why you can’t ask them to not mark their ball.

Using your shot difference of 9 and 16, why is it the shots recieved are not 10 to 16 as that is the difference between them. Iff you would normally get a shot on 1 to 9 you are made to play these holes where you would usually get a stroke.

Can a player actually play a round earlier in the day, on the course the match will later be contested? Playing earlier would give the player an advantage in knowing speed of greens and pin placements.

Only in matchplay

In match play, is it correct that you cannot "finish" on the green unless your opponent says it is okay? Example, I hit my first putt to 2 feet and say "I'll finish" and then proceed to putt it in. Unless your opponent had said it was okay to finish it would be a penalty - loss of hole.

Mike, I notice that you have not received a reply so I will give you my opinion if this is okay. Essentially your question is covered in the video by the point made about playing out of turn and potentially being asked to play the shot again, but there is no loss of hole penalty. Because match play is about head to head competition, finishing off out of turn is considered bad form, as in your example the 2 footer is likely to have more pressure on it (and the hole appear somewhat smaller) after following your opponent in if it is for a win or a half. If you were playing match play against me and kept finishing off from that kind of distance when it was my turn to play, I would keep asking you to take the putt again after taking my shot from further away and would hope you got the message not to keep doing this. The best way to proceed is to go to mark your ball and if you are lucky you may find you are given a number of those short putts. Sounds a bit harsh I know, but that's match play.

Not quite loss of hole, your opponent can ask you to replay the shot.

Real strange one yesterday. Opponent teed off and hit ball into the woods. Declared a provisional and it was on the fairway. He played his 2nd shot on the provisional ball which was not so good but while walking to his 2nd provisional ball shot he found his first tee off ball so decided to play that as a second shot. He argued with me it was legal and I said it cant be. Who is right? Surely by playing his provisional ball a 2nd time he deemed his 1st tee shot lost.

@Andyroo74656 4 года назад
Hi, I looked this one up recently. As long as the first ball was further along the hole than the second ball, you can play the provisional a second time, or multiple times, to keep the game moving. Then if you find your first tee shot, you can disregard your provisional even if you have hit it more than once. But you can't go backwards on the hole, so if your provisional is played from a position more advanced than the first ball, the first is lost and you play the provisional as your scoring ball.

Can you put out in match play
@geoffcohen613

1.23. At our district pennant we use generic handicap match index,(look this up) which is fairer than hole difficulty,as you are laying opponent not course If giving 9 shots as described here then it 1 shot every even hole. If 1 shot, 8th hole 2 shots 8th & 12th hole 3 shots 4, 8 2th holes 4 shots 4, 8 12 16th hole 5 shots 4, 8,10,12 16.

Yes. Had so called rules experts insisting I could not chip after completing the hole in the areas mentioned. Thus ruining my game as would not believe me.
