The Midwest is full of communities that are safe and affordable, but there are also places where no one should want to live. These places are dangerous, filthy, impoverished, desolate cities and towns, where the people who are trapped there are completely miserable. In this video, we're uncovering seven of the worst places you could live in Indiana.

I guess the rule of thumb is something like if there’s a city you can afford to buy a house in you really don’t want to live there.

"Gary". A good four -letter solution for a crossword clue "a very bad place" when "slum", "jail", and "Hell" don't fit.

Gary was once a place of great resources and still had beautiful things about it … there is God and bad in every place at this point .. there is still good there to some it’s the home unfortunately a place don’t go bad people do suffering from their societal oppression and having to adapt to unavailable funding and support to rebuild and this is uncalled for - why aren’t they getting the required necessities to stay intact is the question because human beings live here

What about Indianapolis? You can't turn on the local news or radio station without hearing about the stabbings & shootings that occurred the previous day. There were times I even heard gun shots outside where I lived. I am SO GLAD to be out of that city now!

Indianapolis can get bad but it’s crime often is overlooked due to the fact most of the crime is all in the same areas and it’s has some of the best suburbs in the country in Hamilton and Hendricks counties.

I've lived in Bloomington for 44yrs and have never experienced any crime. The diversity is the draw here. Good arts, music and international food choices. All kinds of activity choices, most of them free. Garden and art walks, studios, shops. Several farmer's markets. Lakes and creeks and ravines TREES everywhere. A very busy city parks calendar. Art and Music festivals. Olympic level sports. A good place to raise a family with good schools and sport camps. Hoosier National Forest and Deam Wilderness, Lakes Monroe & Lemon, and Griffey Lake closest to town.

I live in Terre Haute. I-70 is a major highway for transporting drugs. A lot of the big busts are on I-70. I am a senior citizen and feel fairly safe. Also, I don't take any chances no matter where I am. The major crises are the roads, railroad tracks and what seems like an increase in vehicle accidents. Yes, there are drug and homelessness problems but this is true just about everywhere. It's an ok place to live.

While your points are well researched, it is not accurate to say Gary 'hitched its wagons' to the steel industry. Gary was literally built as a company town for US Steel and named for its founding chairman.
@timothykeith1367
@timothykeith1367 10 месяцев назад
The Gary Works still produces huge amounts of steel, but the process is now highly automated and employees few workers. I think part of the decline of places like Gary is due to the welfare state, which allows people to remain in the area with minimal resources, instead of moving to where where there are jobs. Unemployed young men get into trouble with the law. When someone has a drug conviction most companies won't hire them. Most employers avoid cities with a low percentage of college graduates. Gary has valuable Lake Michigan frontage that begs to be redeveloped. If Gary would further empty out the crime would decline and the city might be redeveloped, which is the long term story for Detroit. Unfortunately, a very long trend considering that Gary was rapidly built in 1906 from a large swampy area. Gary has a potentially great location. Stay in school kids.

I live next to (but not in) a neighborhood in Indy where a million dollars could not buy a home...You would need a multiple of that amount. On summer nights, you can sometimes clearly hear gunfire from an entertainment district that is just a couple of miles away from those mansion homes. Last year, four people were shot to death in one night on those streets by a nineteen year-old girl. When police cordoned off the area they found six vehicles parked there that contained firearms. No permit is required in Indiana to buy or carry a gun.
@calminacrisis126
@calminacrisis126 26 дней назад
IL has terrible gun violence and has had permit requirements for decades. It has a separate, very expensive permit for carrying with massive restrictions. Yet Indy feels much safer to me than many parts of IL. Just saying there are other forces at play with these crimes, more gun control not the magic bullet (pun intended) you wish it was.

Bloomington is hit and miss depending which neighborhood you live in. But overall it's a pretty safe place to live (for a city this size) with beautiful neighborhoods and parks. Campus crime and a couple of high poverty places skew the data.

I’ve lived in two of the towns listed, Muncie and Bloomington. Both are a world better than my hometown, Anderson, In. Anderson was nice when I was a kid, but it’s been downhill ever since. I can’t believe Bloomington is on this list. It is by far my favorite town in Indiana. I imagine the University and drunk students account for a lot of the crime. I felt safe there all the time. I can’t say the same for Anderson or Muncie.
@paulbrower
@paulbrower 3 месяца назад
I get sick when I see a horse track and casino along I-69 in Anderson. People do not get rich working in casinos, let alone betting their paychecks away. Anderson prospered when GM had a big plant there. Yes, assemly line work was mnd-numbing, body-wracking work, but at least one had a union and could retire at 55 if your body wore out. One made enough that one could go to college at night and become an accountant or engineer or save money to start a business. Assembly-line workers with union wages made small businesses viable. It's arguable that the factory did more to create a middle-income America than did college education.

Interesting how some of the worst places in Indiana are also the "big college" towns. Gary & Hammond sit next to each other, but many in Lake Co would tell you Hammond is "safer" than Gary. These two cities & crime bleed down into other adjacent towns like Munster, Highland, Merrillville, & Hobart. I grew up as a youngster in Gary. In the late 70s & early 80s it was known as "Murder Capital of the World." Gary doesn't have as many homicides as it once did because many deaths are now listed as "accidents." Gary was built and founded by US Steel Corp. It didn't hitch its wagon to the steel industry; it was the steel industry. It just never had leadership with an eye on diversification..... just a few notes from the 219 / Lake Co area.....

Also it has it's fair share of child molesters and attempted abductions. I laugh when I meet people new to the area and they're talking about how great it is. Yep. I guess take it up with the Bloomingtonian. They're the ones reporting it: bloomingtonian.com/2023/03/19/how-safe-is-bloomington-really-by-steven-higgs/#google_vignette This is what their article says: One indicator of the dangerous new reality are the bouncers, who include a Combs family member. “The bouncers in the downtown bars are three times the size of the bouncers when I was a young college student,” he said. “I mean, those guys are enormous.” And these days, they wear bullet-proof vests, Combs said. “They wear Kevlar,” he said. “What kind of job is it in Bloomington, Ind., that you have to wear Kevlar? That’s the level we’re operating at now with gun crimes in Bloomington.”

Indianapolis should have been at least number 3 on the list...shootings are a daily occurrence and crime is at an all time high. I grew up in Merrillville IN 9 miles south of Gary and saw the city of Gary decline quickly from 1973 till I moved out in 1980. I lived then in Indy until 2012 as I saw the handwriting on the wall Indy was heading downhill fast. Funny thing is most of the towns listed have colleges in them as a main attraction. Looks like university jobs don't mean great pay or living in those cities.

Terre Haute smelled like crap I will agree, but the reason it smelled is due to a railroad tie plant (creosote the ties are soaked in) and a paper mill, both of which were right next to the interstate. Both plants are now gone and so is the stench. Terre Haute has not smelled bad for two decades hence why it was not mentioned.
