@@magnumllama400 Not every Jack Russel Terrier is aggressive tho. I have two Jack Russel Terriers and none of them are aggressive in any way. They’re pretty calm. One of them can be a little to energized sometimes but that’s because they are a puppy.
JRT’s are NOT hyper 24/7 unless you encourage them to be. They tend to take on the characteristics of the family. If we sleep in, the dog sleeps in. If we play after work before dinner, then that’s crazy time. But when it’s dinner time, it stops. And after dinner it’s cozy time-and she has No problem with cozy time!! But she only jumps around like a during playtime. She doesn’t howl either.
I am looking forward to have one and couple of things that stops me from doing it it's the baking and howling. Did you trainned her not to or it's just something she don't do?
My partner and I adopted 2 Parson Russell Terriers. We LOVE THEM SO MUCH!!! THEY are SO LOYAL AND CUDDLING. SO loving and INTELLIGENT. A TON of WORK ALWAYS ♾️ but soooo REWARDING AND A BLESSING. THEY are just silly too. Our dogs speak to us in sign language, ( a language they developed all in their own .)
Great vid! Subbed! I adopted my jack russell 6 years ago. She was my first dog and was an absolute handful for the first couple of years! She improved me as a person along the way and taught me to be more patient. They're the most affectionate and loyal creatures.
Have had our JRT 4 years now. Rescue dog and was reckoned to be about a year old when we got him. Certainly he is strong willed and tends to be reactive around other dogs if they are new to him. Ok once he has got to know them. He doesn't jump and doesn't dig. Loves walks but won't come on runs with me. His greatest asset is his ability to engage with people I see for counselling sessions. He is happy to be sat next to them and stays quiet throughout the session just happy to be stroked. This really puts them at ease and is very calming. As a result he is now a registered Pets As Therapy dog. So I guess there is a quite a lot of difference between one Jack and another.
Yeah I would definitely say so. Mine is definitely a digger and jumper but she does also have that calm side to her in the right situation and just enjoys the petting and affection Thanks for the comment and watching!
An experienced dog person should have no problem. You have to keep them worn down and entertained. I took mine to the stable everyday. My current dog is calm for a Russell.
My suggestion on getting a Jack is to give them a day or two to learn the rules when you get them. Don't get all "look at the puppy, blah blah blah". Just let them see how things work, and they'll fall in line to a degree. And agreed, mine is very clingy.
I wouldn't change a thing about my Jack . Even his bad points as they make him who he is. To me they are just incredible dogs. I cant even tell people what he is capable of as they wouldn't believe me lol.
I would say most of the reasons you listed, not to get a Jack Russell terrier with more sleepy not to get a dog. You need to have time you need to exercise and you need to train all dogs so do all dogs chew things they shouldn’t.. as far as should not get a Jack Russell as a first dog is nonsense I adopted a Jack Russell first dog I’ve ever owned. She’s is the most loyal bestest friend I have she love me and my girls and she is perfect in every way.
DON'T HESITATE! They are wonderful, courageous characters and stay puppies to the end! The fun you get with terriers/Jack Russell's cannot be measured!
Stick with it and be consistent They learn fast but are also smart in a ways they can use against you Pay attention and be patient but remain consistent and they will turn into the best dogs you can adopt. Best of luck and let us know if you have any questions or need any help!
Same!!! I got mine at 9 weeks for my 17th birthday and I’m raising her all on my own as I agreed with my parents that I can only have a dog if I take full responsibility and she’s my first dog
My Jack Russell became my first dog because her previous owner no longer wanted her. #1 BEST thing that ever happened to me. Sure, the dog may have been a (little) bit of a handful in her youth, and at times I feel like she may have actually trained me rather than the other way around, but I've become such a huge fan of the breed. She is now 16 years old, and dear god, I love her so much.
My 3 year old Jack Russell is so relaxed, not hyper at all. He has short medium hair and sheds so much, it’s unbelievable he still has hair. He definitely likes to protect us all, very loyal and he thinks he’s the size of a Great Dane.
I have a jack chi & i am laughing so loud. I didnt know any of this, & she drew me out of a very long depression by forcing me to be active & attentive
I didn't choose my wee Jack....she chose me.....she was a recue dog....2 years old when I met her.....she would climb up my back....still got her 9 years later.....
My Jack was the first ‘clingy’ dog I ever owned. I found it unusual at first....didn’t know what to make of it.....but after a while, I really enjoyed it. Now that she’s gone and I have a semi-non-clingy Chihuahua, I really miss my clingy Jack.
Love, love LOVE this breed!!! They are calm and cuddly when you sit and ready to play anytime! I have had many Jack Russells and I love them all. i have found that the females tend to calm down better if you have them inside but of course it depends upon the dog and how you train and handle them. They thrive on your affection and your approval. So give them plenty of love. They also love to be trained and are easily trained for the most part as long as you are consistent and find something that gets their undivided attention during training. If they seem to have a difficult time calming down inside, give them a toy or rawhide to chew and it is like a pacifier for a child. Do not let them get away with bad behavior and praise them thoroughly for good behavior. I only use treats as a reward for a positive behavior such as going into their kennel without a problem. They were bred for a job so giving them something to do is always a plus. Good luck!!
We’ve had two Jacks. Had our second one put down yesterday, was 16 years old. Heartbroken. Cannot wait to get another one. There is no reason in the world strong enough to stop us from having another. Lots of work, lots of time commitment, totally completely worth it. Best dogs ever.
Just put mine down today. Also 16yrs old. It was brutal. Her retinas detached in 2015 and I almost put her down. She was able to get her vision back and lived another 6yrs. RIP DAISY
Agreed. 1. They're hyper. They need exercise, running especially. But at home they can play by themselves, they don't need you to play with them all the time, at least not my dog. Just get them toys. They get more chill in their teens. 2. They need training. They tend to pull the leash and so on. 3. Jack russels were bred to hunt. They might just run after a rabbit, even when they've been trained. 4. And in general, they like to chase anything or anybody. 5. They will follow you anywhere. :) 6. They can be a bit more aggressive with other dogs than some other breeds.
I might disagree with the small dog reason. JRT's are large dogs in a small body. That is, they behave a lot more like larger breeds, NOT a yappy purse dog. Took mine everywhere, camping, fishing, stores, you name it. Had to put her down last month, yes, still hurts.
That is a valid point and I 100% agree with this point of view about JRT's. For anyone who reads the comments, that is a perfect way to explain a JRT. A large dog in a small body. Thanks for the comment craig!
My brother got a jack Russell at 6wks old and couldn't handle him. I ended up moving in and sleeping on the couch for 6 months to train the dog. I was having my own life issues mental health etc but I took on the dog training at times I thought I was gonna end up in the loonie bin. Diesel is now 3, training him the best I could was by far the hardest thing I've ever done and now we're inseparable. I go home 1 or 2 nights a week and the rest of the time I sleep on my brothers sofa with Diesel laying on my pillow. Hardest but most rewarding. He got me back into a routine and helped me with my own life struggles. Now I go home for a night or two he pines for me and I struggle to sleep when he's not on my pillow.
My family had three Jack Russell terriers over the past 40 years (one Jack at a time) and they were all amazing, very clever, and had distinctive personalities as well as wonderful senses of humour. They were a true blessing in our lives (as well as our dear cats). They're not for everybody, but there are no bad dogs; just bad owners and that's true for any dog breed.
I have had Brady for 10 years now. The rescue said he was 4 and had been in foster for 2 years. Having been a trainer in a large urban shelter, these dogs are not typical. Brady has always been calm for a JRT. Best way to control the jumping is to put it on command. Looks like an amazing trick. They take LOTS of patience, but if you do it, you will be rewarded with the best dog ever. They were bred to hunt fox so are FEARLESS when it comes to other animals which can include people. Brady has taken down an 80# pit bull, so patience and consistency work, doing that alpha male domination stuff is not a good idea.
if you have kids 3rd-6th grade and they’re active kids I 10/10 recommend adopting a Jack Russell or a mix. This dog will keep up with them and will probably over tire them 😂 they are super smart and clever and mischievous. Not a day was boring when we had one in our lives. Our Jack Russell lived such a great life with us. She hated everyone but dogs and us her pack😂 She always did pull tricks on us and she was mischievous stealing our socks and burying them. ONLY SOCKS! Never toys even though she had a lot 😂 when we lived up north that’s when we saw her hunting skills come into play because she CAUGHT A DOVE MID FLIGHT! like wow it was traumatizing as a kid seeing her attack the bird like that 😂 but I feel like she could sense our disparity and she never tried attacking another animal again 😂 she lived till 13 years of age due to heart problems last year and I always think of her everyday 🥲 she was so unique and extremely loyal. She acted so humane majority of the time 😂😂😂😂😂😂
So I have a suspected JRT/Beagle mix (we found her on the side of the road so we really can't be sure). And I 100% agree with not getting this dog as a first time owner. My dog is an absolute HANDFUL and it was quite the challenge training her, but we wouldn't trade her for the world ♥️
Great heads up! We got a jrt without knowing all these facts 10 years ago. We are now so in love with him that it’s hard to imagine life without him! He is so loving, obedient, and smart. He’s on the dinner table with us and in the bathroom waiting when I’m taking a shower. I’ll give you 100 reasons why they are great! Motivates you to keep up with them!
I've liked them my whole life, knew these points, and yet when we finally brought one home, are amazed at how spot on your observations are. We just kept saying "check" as you brought up the points and we compared it to this puppy's personality. But she's an amazing girl and I wouldn't have it any other way. Snuggles. ZOOMIES. Boinging like Tigger. Pays attention like no other, she's just a treat all day.
that's funny because I always wonder if it is just me or if everyone agrees. Shockingly, people get mad at this video even though it's meant simply to educate since I own and raise a JR as well but nonetheless, we appreciate the comment and the support on the channel. Thanks for watching and happy holidays
I've just adopted a jack Russell for the first time, previously had a cairn terrier and all I can say is that they are truly wonderful amazing and loving dog all of the points made in this video are spot on, once your jack has settled in to your home, you've put the ground work in with training and positive reinforcement feedback they are one of the most adorable little best friends you could ever ask for.
I love my JRT! He is four years old, I was lucky to find him for free at a shelter when he was 1. They told me that they found him wandering a neighborhood with another dog, always wondered about his past. He obviously did not receive training right away because of his intense anxiety and fears at times, but it hasn't stopped me from loving him as much as I do. Being my first dog, training was hard. It took a long time to potty train him, but once he got that down, never another accident. Doesn't chew on things, understands ownership.. as in, what belongs to him and what is ours. He understands when I give him a new toy as a gift, it makes him so happy and excited! He adds them to his collection of items that I refer to as "ball". Milo, go get your ball! And he excitedly darts around the room looking for the 1st toy of his that he can find. He's not very good at fetch, though. He loses his damn mind every time I get home and I have to calm him down for a couple of minutes.. he makes very weird noises, grunting groaning sounds. Hard to describe. Terrified of loud sounds. Extremely affectionate and clingy at times. When he is ready for bed, he stands in the hallway and occasionally whines until I go to bed and he crawls in. I love him more than words could ever describe and I look forward to growing up with him, sad at times when I know he will leave me first.
My first dog was a JRT but he passed away 3 years ago. He certainly had some weird characteristics, for example, he despised the word "wheat" But only if you were to pronounce the h He was also very very protective of my mom when she was pregnant with my little sister, not even letting my dad near her, growling and nipping at him if he tried I miss him with all my heart but now we have a three year old JRT and a 6 year old Pitbull terrier
I would add an 8th reason; they tend to be very yappy (at least the JRT that my Nan had was). I adore little terriers; I wasn't always a fan, but when Badger came to live with my Nan and then we inherited him, Badger buried his way into our hearts. I also love Border Terriers and Westies. Thanks for the vid.
I've had Jack Russells for years now, and love the breed immensely! It's people who don't know what they're doing as dog owners, and who don't understand the breed they're adopting, who cause any problems.
I've had my Jack Russell for a day, and I've said "what are you eating??" more times than I have in my whole life. And I have a miniature schnauzer. And i raised a human child. Edit: she's a rescue, 3 years old.
OMG! Right off the bat 🤣 I'm trying not to laugh as you Say, hmmm what are you eating!? I have found myself speaking those very words! I am in the midst of everything that's Chihuahua/Jack Russell Terrier puppy 🐶 😢 😄! The struggle is real, and training has proven itself as quite the challenge and frustration, but I can't imagine giving up on my baby girl. I'm so lucky to have her 💓 and am so in love ❤️ I have a smile every day, every moment knowing she's in my life and heart.
Agreed! I rescued my jack Russell and he was my first dog. Was definitely hard at first and lived in an apartment. When adopted they told me he was a spaniel mix so I had no knowledge about his breed at first. Now I understand him so much better and he’s the best dog I’ve ever had.
my first Jack Russel lived with us 15 Years ... and passed in november 2020.. i missed him an he left a hole im my Live... My Wife didnt want a new dog with the same Look so now i bought us a new dog in August 21 .. and this time a Parson Russel .. the SUV of the Jackies and i still waiting for the Reasons to NOT Adopt them ,,, all Reasons You told are TO Adopt a Jacky ... at least for me :-))
I think you should do a video for all of the reasons you should adopt a JRT!!! I had one for 16 years and he was perfect! They are so intelligent, just a tad hyper. I don't think you should put people off from adopting one, just let them know the responsibility, unless you're going for click bait.
David, Not sure if you took the time to look at the channel videos before making your comment. Here is that video you are referring to or hoping was on the channel. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7-GCcCJpuCc.html That video already exist and can be found right here and is one of the first videos I made. Also, I own a Jack Russell so would never try and convince people not to adopt this dog. However, some people are not made to own a Jack Russell and that's what that video was for was to be transparent. Not be click baity.
My jack Jet is my shadow and best friend. Is he difficult? Yeah. But he is a sweetheart with his family. He's also adorable. He turned 8 yrs last week on 12/11/2021 🥰
Exercise is everything for a jack… EVERYTHING. 2 totally different dogs if properly exercised everyday. Glad you touched on this. Mine does an 30 minutes of HARD running separate from training. If she doesn’t get to run hard you can tell that unused energy translates to some sort of destructive or stressed behavior.
We have adopted a Jack Rusell. He's 1-year old but he's too aggressive. Any suggestion on how to change his behavior. We can touch him but he gets irritable easily. I wanted him to be a good dog for each of us especially for my kids :(
Pandemonium.Ours has the loudest bark you can imagaine for such a little guy. Just the best little dogs but as you say need training and a lot of exercise or will run riot. A few years ago I was cycling past a couple with about 20 JRs.Literally a whole tribe of them off the lead apart from one.Wish I had stopped and got a picture as it was amazing scene.
We had got a jack Russell terrier from a friend of my dad back in 02. He was on the way to the pound after 4 different families didnt want him and 12 years later we had to put him down due to him being too sick. He was a good dog that loved to go for rides and chasing squirrels. He was so smart
One thing that I tell people that most JRTs are killed by cars and get stuck in holes and die. The run off after things even if trained with a shock collar and a hot wire fence.
i have a jack russell, she was my first ever dog, they really are hyper. but for a guy with no dog experience and had a fear of dogs i’ve grown to her so much, she’s my best friend and i trained her perfectly. all it takes is consistency and patience, my only problem is i didn’t socialize her so she is aggressive but if someone was to come around her really instead of being scared of the barks. she warms up to someone once she smells them, she’s a great protection dog if someone is near my house we don’t know, she lets us know by barking or running to me then looks at the door. she gives me signals of when she wants something, i potty trained her in a week. she’s just perfect, love everything about her. finally she is superrrrr friendly, lovable and is so good with kids, she doesn’t bite at all and when she does it’s a playful bite, she’s so gentle, she never bites my fingers when i give her something, she grabs it with her teeth so gentle until she have full control. she’s just amazing! my best friend forever...
Super video, spot on,thanks!16yr jack owner. At one point we walked 7500mi in 8yrs,from 2 to 10 yrs old.Small guy 11lbs.We got every moment out of this amazing breed.I would get another one in a New York second!
No do get a jack russell terrier I have one named Rambo and they are extremely good at catching rats, and will play ALL day. most are also extremely loving and are the only reason my life isnt boring
Considering adopting a 6 month old in need of rescue. He is 6 months old. I've had jrt's in the past but always from 8 to 12 weeks to start. He was housebroken originally but bacame homeless at some point I'm told and is spending most his days in an outdoor kennel. Thoughts?
I was worried at first when I got mine because the care of having to walk it a lot and having to get her haircut because she is a broken coat but the way she looked at me knowing that I was going to rescue her after she had been abused by her previous owners was the best look I never gotten and I knew right then that she was mine
Excellent dogs full of energy had mine to 16 yrs 4 months had her since 6 weeks old 2005 she passed away this Wednesday due to declining heath refusing to walk comes Jan 2021 her breathing gone loud lungs filled up with liquid and heart problems avoided eating food only drinking water sleeps all day....I knew it was time for her to go.....my heart is broken I was 17 years old when we first had her now age 33 seems like my best friend has gone from me....
It's not fair to the jackrussel if you are to old and have no energy. These dogs need to run in the dog park everyday at lease twice a day. If you don't take them out they will run in the house so fast it will drive you nuts and they can get hurt. So think before you get one. They are great dogs but not for old slow people.
