I adopted a 10-year-old cat in 2017 who had been surrendered by the family of its previous owner who died. I didn't know at the time but it was her last day on this earth as she was getting euthanised that night if not sold beforehand. She was in a huge cold dark concrete room - in a tiny wire cage - out the back- by herself. She'd been there for three months. She loves to sit beside me at my desk and watch cat videos.

God bless you. Our local shelter used to be a non kill. Yet the latest director kills many, many cats. If they are scarred, timid, whatever. And they still toot the horn that they have a 98% live adoptable rate. Fast forward Dec. 2019, they now advertise sick animals up for adoption (that need big $, for ongoing medical care). When they killed many, many healthy ones. What is wrong is right, and what ought to be right, is wrong. Just a sign of the times, for those that have eyes to see!

@@CatGale "Thank you for adopting the ca.t" I always find it a bit weird when people thank others like this. It's almost as if they alone care about the cats and the others don't. As if their caring is somehow superior than others' and they have exclusive rights over the cat. A better response would be to say - It's so wonderful you adopted that cat. Just my unsought feedback. (Somehow this applies more to the 'thanks for adopting' comment than the 'thanks for saving their life' one.)

I'm gonna get mine from a breeder, my decision. I want a kitten that I can raise, not a cat that has been abandoned, probably even treated badly. Getting them from a shelter is just dumb. If you get one from a shelter, another cat doesn't find a home. Cats from breeders need homes too.
@sadisticeggsaladchan2819
@sadisticeggsaladchan2819 5 лет назад
@@maarcoo97 lol your logic comes full circle, did you even watch the video. Shelter cats are sometimes abandoned or mistreated, people like you avoid them so they live out the rest of their lives without a home. Anyone and everyone would take in a kitten, but fewer would shelter cats. Whether or not you want to give a shelter cat a good life is up to you, no one cares.

I adopted an all white 11yr old female in the middle of December. She's still very active but she is also a lazy bum who likes to lay by me and relax a lot of the time. I love getting older cats not only because they are much better behaved but because I don't want them to be stuck in a cage or glass room in a shelter for the rest of their life.

I adopted my handsome black cat Panther about 18 months ago, directly from his previous person, Bob. Bob was a WWII light-bomber and at 95, had to go into a seniors’ residence. Panther is now about 9 or 10, so has some good years to come. I’m 76 and healthy, so we are well matched. He’s quite the character and I adore him. He’s the 17th cat in my life; at one point, when my husband was still around, we had four cats and a 50-pound dog. They got along very well.

Last year we adopted a 10 YO black kitty, he is great. However, when we first saw him he look bad. He had lost his first forever home and had been in the homeless shelter for 3 Months. He had a lot of stress and had over groomed his fur. He had very little fur on his belly and legs. Also, he had a bad tooth and infection. Yes, he looked bad. But, when I touched his head he purred. We thought we had to adopt him because no one else would and I was pretty sure he was a good boy. We adopted him and took him to our vet. After x=rays, blood work and attending to his abscessed tooth we took him home. It did take him a couple of months to feel at home with our other cats. But he was very much a home with my Wife and I and sleep on our bed ever night. Great CAT.

With all due respect, but that's the downside to adult cats. Strong, younger cats (1 to 2 years) are not as expensive as old, 'sick' cats. Some people would say; 'If you can't care for an old cat, don't adopt them' but wouldn't it be sad if a family had the space and the time and the love, but not the money to care for a *very* sick cat? I'd argue that, if the family is committed to a number of vet-appointments and unexpected costs, it's a great opportunity for cats to find a home. Sure, it's an important message to adopt the older cats. But I still very much understand why people would want to develop a bond and not get a cat that has much trouble adjusting to normal life because of former issues. My downstairs neighbour has a cat, that he loves, but he regrets getting a cat from the shelter because one moment he cuddles and the next, he's hissing and peeing on the couch. The cat had been physically abused by the former owner and well..you can't erase that from his mind. His former cats were calm and helped him whenever he was anxious. This one causes worries.

Yes! Adopt the older kitties. I adopted my cat 3 years ago. He was 15 years old with some age related health issues but they've cleared up. He's 18 now, still gets the zoomies, loves to give me cuddles, but not overwhelm me with them, and purrs, purrs, purrs. We send our ❤ to Gale and your other babies. Thank you for your positive videos!

She was my Sunshine, my Only Sunshine, she was a keeper from the very first hour I had her home... What a joy... I'm in tears as I write, she's been gone for 3 years and I miss her so much! 💔 She'd been dearly loved by her former owner and it showed, and I continued to love her, she was a beautiful ginger, 6 pounds. I usually walk in the shelter and ask which cat is getting euthanized that day. That's how I pick my lovely friends. Its more emotional work to get them humanized (since they are classified as unadoptable by the shelters standards) , but its totally worth it in the end. Once they start showing love... They don't stop, and we're best friends forever

I definitely believe in adopting older cats as their owners may have died or they were turned in for other reasons. I looked for the cat that had been in the shelter the longest. 2 were at foster homes and Blackie 2 years old had been there 11 months. Owner died, husband's job required time away from home. Her sibling got adopted but she was shy and scared. Plus black cats are less likely to be adopted.. Took her home along with Chloe who had been there 5 months with Blackie in the same room. They play together, chase each other, sleep on my bed with me , like attention and pretty much have me trained! Took awhile for Blackie to come out of her shell, and still skittish sometimes but getting better😺😺😺😺😺😺

We ended up with our neighbor's black cat. They were not cat people, had 3 dogs, 3 other cats, a small yard, and she was spending the majority of her days in our yard. She's not a lap cat. She does snuggle with us in bed. And since moving in she uses her litter box just fine. Where she was living, she used to use the bathtub as her litter box.

After my beloved cat of 14 yrs passed away this summer, I went to the shelter and adopted the saddest cat I found, even looked similar to my old girl. I was too sad to start over with a kitten and wanted to help a cat who'd normally not have a good chance to be adopted. It was awkward at first, we were both sad and been through a lot but now we had each other. Fast forward 4 months and she looks like a different cat, happy, confident and grooming herself regularly, sometimes the most rewarding thing isn't about what the cat gives you but the impact of what you've given them.

Many years ago one of my friends children came home with this tiny ginger kitten he had found, it was adopted and had reached the age of eight before the family decided to emigrate to Canada and I was asked if I would give him a home. It was probably the best thing, apart from meeting my wife that has ever happened to me, brings a tear to my eye just thinking about him. He would come the instant I called his name, Zappa, and would respond to instruction almost like a dog. He was self aware, something not generally considered possible for a cat, I say this because it was my habit to stand in front of a mirror holding him so he could understand what he was seeing was himself. Self aware? yes, because one day I did it while he had some dirt on his face, the instant I put him down he began grooming that exact spot to remove the dirt he had seen. When I had a stroke several years ago and collapsed at the top of the stairs trying to reach my wife, who was in bed, it was Zappa who alerted my wife to my predicament. She was woken by what she says were the screeches of a Banshee, when she opened the bedroom door she found me laying face down and unconscious with Zappa going crazy, headbutting and literally punching my face with his paws, she describes him as being in a state of acute panic. I was in hospital for the best part of a week and my wife tells me he only left my man cave to eat and poop during the entire time I was away. Sadly Zappa himself had a stoke when he was 22, went blind and deaf overnight, it was humbling to see how he overcame the handicap living quite contentedly to the age of 23 before a cancerous growth meant we had to do the hardest of all things and have him put to sleep. A few years later, 1 year ago, my wife and I decided to give a home to another cat, we actually ended up with two, Davypuss and Skycat, 5 and 12 yo respectively. I hit it off with Davypuss instantly, no problems with him, but Skycat wouldn't let me near him, past experiences with a male I imagine? Still I have persevered and last week he actually came into the man cave and laid down on the couch with me while I was floating away to The Space Ritual. It was quite a special moment and worth waiting for, neither of them will ever replace Zappa, they have to be the most stupid cats on the planet :), but the relationship is building and because of the difficulty communicating with Skycat very rewarding. I recall watching a lecture on You Tube by Walter Veith many years ago during which he postulated the idea that man can achieve far more in harmony with God than we ever can while opposed to him. I understand now what he meant. Our relationship with our animals is very similar, just as we can be more than we are in harmony with God, so animals fulfill their true potential when in harmony with us. I remain awestruck.

The cat in the thumbnail picture is actually Romeo He died at age 14 about 2 years ago. RIP ROMEO 🙏🏼 Bundeva and Nada are a year and a half. I got them when they were about 6 months. Romeo was named as a tribute to my Italian heritage. Bundeva & Nada are Croatian words as a tribute to that part of my family. I’m very glad that you and your animal pals are well!

I adopted a sickly 13 year old orange long haired female cat years ago. She spent 3 months in a small cage at a rescue shelter. Nobody wanted her. I took her and gave her the opportunity to be an indoor/outdoor cat using a cat door. One day I was in my office at home doing work and decided to take a break. I went into the hallway and there on the carpet were about 15 white flower buds all lined up in a row from my kitchen to my office. I then looked out my office window to the driveway and there she was with a big white flower bud in her mouth. She saw me and let out a cry which caused the flower bud to drop from her mouth. Some cats bring in dead mice to show their appreciation. My cat brought me flowers!

I adopted an adult cat for the first and last reasons. When I met my kitty he was in a room with a bunch of other cats and he was running up to anyone that entered the room and begging for attention. Everone else was ignoring him (probably because he is really big and was super needy) and I could see how desperate he was to get out of the shelter so I couldn't just leave him there. He's such a great and loving cat. He knows that he was rescued and is always showing how much he appreciates it.

We adopted a 11 year old boy. His name was Freedom. He was such a joy and blessing. He indeed was my nap buddy and daily companion. He purred all the time, his tail would quiver when he was happy to see you, and he loved belly rubs and chin scratching. He’d allow me to clean his eyes and loved daily spa-treatment hair brushing. Sadly-after 3 years-this past August he got a really bad mouth cancer. I mourn his passing every day. I miss him so much. He truly was my best friend/buddy. We still have two other kitties (our littlest is the thumbnail) that keep us hopping, but I so miss my buddy Mr. Freedom. His fur always smelled of fresh air, and his snuggling & purring soothed my heart.

I was out driving one evening out in the country to calm my nerves and a cat darted out of a cornfield and went across the street in front of my car. I stopped, got out and stood next to the bushes that he went into. We talked back and forth, until he decided to come out of the bushes. He was the sweetest stray cat and had noticeable issues: cross eyed, malnourished, roundworms, fleas, ticks, scars, and an injury on his leg. I picked him up (he let me) and took him home. I was able to get him inside of my apartment without a kennel. I put him down outside of my front door and let him decide on whether he would come inside or not (he did). He’s now a healthy boy and I named him Jeff! He is such a sweetie and I love him so much! I can’t believe it’s been 6 months already!

They will continue learning, developing, and changing even when older-- just like humans. And totally, older animals continue to play -- if given a chance. All it takes is a positive /supportive environment.

My cat was a stray before she arrived at the shelter. No one wanted her because she would hiss at anyone. The shelter thought of putting her down but I took her regardless. Within a week even with hissing I petted her and she immediately started bumping her head on my hand asking for more. All she wanted was a bit of love but she was too scared to ask for it. Now she's a bundle of joy. My husband and I love her unconditionally. although, it takes her a bit to be okay with strangers.

An FYI to prospective cat owners watching this video - I've never, ever regretted adopting an adult cat. My cat (a Maine Coon mix) was approximately two years old and in the shelter for five months before I adopted him. Why no one took him before me (or put him in the shelter in the first place) is beyond my comprehension. The only thing my neighbor and I could figure out is that possibly his original owner got backed into a corner and was forced to give him up. Casey (my cat) came to my home very loving, caring, litter trained and self grooming - just like the video says. And trust me, he knew he had been taken to a new forever home away from the shelter. When I picked him up the first morning after I brought him home, I was delighted to hear him purring as loud as he possibly could. He KNEW he had a new home!! That was nine years ago and he is still a joy. FYI -- Diane.

I love the idea of adopting older cats. It gives me great satisfaction to know I'm giving an older cat a loving home in it's twilight years and making it's days as happy as possible. Older cats are usually the last to be adopted and this greatly upsets me. They need love too, more in fact. They will show you a lot of love in return and it makes me so warm inside and is so touching to know I'm giving an older cat a better life and lots of love in it's last years.

I used to have two small, hyperactive kitten (already weaned). They created an epic mess around the house every day lol They drains my energy but at the same time, they made me feel young too. Then, i had an older cat. At that time, I was a little busy with work etc. But he is self sufficient. Not that he doesn't need attention and care at all, he's just perfect. Going back home after work, I am too tired to clean up the mess created by the younger cat, but older cat is perfect perfect.

Thank you so much for this! I think a lot of people are dreaming of a "cute little kitten" - and do not really know how much attention, supervision and "entertainment" the new member of the family needs... I am grateful my ginger senior (13 in May) sleeps after midnight and does not "make biscuits" on me at 4 in the morning or wakes me up with loud "meooooows" when it is still dark outside because HE thinks it is time now for the first food of the day. When he has to leave earth I will for sure adopt another senior from a shelter in his honour...

@@GreenTornado I think that he's grateful for his new home and is fitting in well. He was domesticated, but wound up homeless and living with a colony of farel cats. He was caught during a trap and release program effort, but not released, because he wasn't farel. They unfortunately clipped his left ear. There have been a couple of bad habits involving staying off of my kitchen counter and nipping me sometimes, but he's doing better. He's often very affectionate. Things will work out. Thank you for asking...
@GreenTornado
@GreenTornado 5 лет назад
@@stonefreews Why did they clip his ear? That reminds me of my cat. I think he had cancer forming at the top of his ear, so the vet had to cut off the top half of his ear to avoid the cancer spreading. It was either cancer or a really bad infection. Thankfully, his behaviour didn't change at all after we went to collect him from the vet. Glad to hear that he's doing better. Thank you for adopting him. You were probably his last chance of finding a home, so thank you. You're welcome. Just glad he is settling in slowly.
@stonefreews
@stonefreews 5 лет назад
@@GreenTornado Organizations that do 'trap and release' with cats will spade or neuter them and then commonly clip the top of the left ear as a way of identification. They won't try to catch a cat with a clipped left ear in the future, because they know that it was already fixed. My cat was already neutered and so I don't understand why his left ear was clipped since he went into a shelter verses being released.

I always love just how happy and tranquil older cats are. They aren't afraid of the world around them, and are ready to experience plenty with you. They're almost always open to cuddle, and the lower energy level means you can offer your cat the love and attention they need even if you don't have all the time in the world. I plan to adopt a senior or adult cat when I get the chance, and make sure I give them the loving home they deserve.
