I’ve had depression all my life and was diagnosed with major depressive disorder when I was 18. Another thing I did as a young child was I noticed I had super morbid and existential thoughts compared to others my age. Idk if that’s just me, but I think that’s another huge sign of depression in children- more frequent thoughts on pessimistic/sad/morbid/mature topics.

@@MelodicBlueberry don’t be afraid of your thoughts or the possibility of depression, honey. it’s just the way some of our brains are wired but thankfully we live in an age where we can get help for it. but here’s the thing- not every therapist is a good one. some will try to make you feel bad about yourself, make you feel like there is something inherently wrong with you- i’ve had a couple therapists like that. sometimes it takes switching to a new one a few times before you finally meet one that actually cares and helps you feel better about life and yourself. my advice is don’t stop until you’ve found that therapist 💙

I almost dropped out but thankfully I pulled half of myself together before I actually got kicked out due to academic probation. I changed majors, graduated with a C- average. The only thing keeping my GPA up was my B average from before everything happened. I really don't know how the university gave me one more term to not fail out. I spent a whole year moping and had decided that it wasn't helping me so I forced myself to keep going. I know not everyone was as lucky as I was. My expensive piece of paper got me in the door of many interviews even though I don't remember much of what I learned. I'm not fully out yet but I at least have some ability to study and learn now. I'm now taking community college classes because my degree was too general and so I needed to learn something more specialized to apply to. My GPA is not that low anymore but I can still see the depressed self creep in at times.

I've been struggling with depression since I was 7-8 till date (17 now) and finally discovered near the end of last year that I have depression cuz of this channel. This video described me pretty well, and add anxiety, overthinking to the mix and boom! You got me.....also it feels like core memories of mine are just...not there? My memory is so bad that I don't remember anything from years or even months ago, also can't easily get things to enter my brain as new memories....have seen a video about how this is cuz of constant stress affecting the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex.

What NOT to do: ¤ Scold them for being depressed ¤ Blame them for their depression ¤ Tell them to "just" suck it up ¤ Saying "It's not that bad" "others have it worse" ¤ Attack the symptom (don't use your phone, just study or focus harder, etc) instead of being attentive to their emotions What to do: ¤ Excercise compassion ¤ Stay calm and excercise self compassion as well ¤ Patience ¤ Listen to them, ask what THEY need. ¤ Encourage them to seek help ¤ Work TOGETHER on strategies to get better (rather than bossing them around) These things seem obvious to me now, but I realize that some perople aren't going to get it when they first have to encounter depression in their circle. It can be very scary and you may unknowingly lash out which is not good for anyone. I don't have depression I am just interested in being helpful to those who do and learning to be more understanding. If you have more experience, let me know if I should change anything in the list.

I was extremely sad and frustrated oftentimes when I was younger because I would get harassed a lot in school for my mental disabilities. This even manifested at one point to suicidal thoughts, which I brushed off as just mere side thoughts at the time. @jetskiis.7477
@jetskiis.7477 2 года назад
I really connected with the distancing one. It was, and still is at times, a big problem. Distancing myself has always been a bit of a defense so I wouldn’t get hurt, but it really only made me feel lonely and unimportant. I have actually started to open up a little more and try not to distance myself when I feel bad, but it’s also been really hard because yay trust/abandonment issues. If you’re reading this and have a hard time just remember that you don’t have to trust or open up to everyone at once. Just start off with one person, and you don’t even have to share anything too big at first. It makes everything much easier when you build up that trust, and if you feel ready, you can spend some time with another person, feel out where you stand, and do the same thing. Rinse and repeat. Honestly you don’t even have to open up to everyone, but it’s good to share your trust and honesty with a good couple of people. I hope this could help someone :> PS: remember not to trauma dump unless they ask and you’re comfortable saying, or you ask permission first

I have had this for over 5 years now and I’m at stage 3 of “Happiness Death”. Stage 3 is when you start to become well adult form or when you want to move on and just be alone for a LONG time like for the rest of your life. It also makes you wanna have jobs that just come to you that you want to be it NOW and it’s just random or for no reason. Thank you for reading.

I was 9 when my depression started, and I can find myself in all these symptoms to be honest. It started with a lack of energy mixed with bad thoughts, that quickly turned into social and emotional withdrawal. I felt like I could only ruin things, and constantly felt guilty about things that no one seems bothered by. Then I started using my ipad as a way to escape reality, I was terrified of listening to my.own thoughts and would rather watch videos till 6 am and then get up to go to school, than give in for a bit to fall asleep. I didn't feel like I was worthy of having fun, and quickly dropped most of my hobbies, I also didn't seem to enjoy them as much anymore. It's been a decade, and I am still struggling with depression, but I'm trying to socialise more, and I found a hobby I can still enjoy in the moment. I just kinda wish my parents knew the signs. I applied for therapy 1.5 years ago, I'm still on a waiting list atm. I want to get better, but I don't think I can do it without guidance. (Edit: Spelling)

I relate to all of these- my depression started when I was 9, close to 10. And may I say... it's probably a good idea to NOT tell a 9 year child or anywhere near that they absorbed their twin. In my experience of that it gave me depression and never ending guilt for 3-4 years. I stopped feeling guilt at 13 but it's still lingering sometimes in my brain. I'm planning to get mental help but my parents think I'm fine. 🙃 Edit: I'm getting a therapist now since my mother finally realized that I wasn't well by me attempting suicide. However I gotta wait until my mother finds one. But right now I'm given meds from my doctor. Right now I'm doing fine. It kinda makes me sick tho.

I have been watching your channel for months and I desperately want to tell my mum that I don't feel ok, that I don't feel fine at all, but I'm scared of her telling me "you're just copying your friends again, aren't you?", "stop relying on the Internet diagnosing you with things you don't have" or "you're just going through puberty, you'll be fine" I've gotten so tired of hearing her say this that I just stopped telling her how I feel, in fear that she'll just tell me that I'm overreacting. I wish that she would just listen to me for once

I've never wanted to self diagnose and stuff like that BUT I'm getting really concerned about myself now. I have been having so many of these symptoms and showing so many of these signs when I was younger and I'm not sure how I can get over this. I'm practically failing in school because I can't concentrate, gaining and losing appetite all the time, and I really don't know who to turn to. It's like all of my motivation has been drained out and I don't find fun in anything. Reading books doesn't help because I can't comprehend it and understand since I can't focus AT ALL but scribbling, sketching, doodling used to help me a bunch but it's like I'm stuck in a rabbit hole at this point. I hope I can open up and find help soon, and I also hope that people that are going through the same thing can also get better. :)

I for sure had a depressive episode at 10/11 years old. Beside having all the listed symptoms, I had no energy's to take care of myself in general back then, and was constantly judged for that. Parents, please, if a child is lacking in energy to the point where they can't even take a proper shower, this isn't laziness, it's serious. Nobody helped me when I needed, but I hope the spread of information nowadays will make it easier for people to notice depression in children

I just don't understand how parents say "don't worry there's nothing wrong with you your young you don't know what your feeling" with a straight face we may be young but at some point we realize what depression and stress are but some parents refuse to believe that and say that it's just puberty or it's just a phase I just don't understand how my own parents did not notice it before my will broke like a MONTH ago it took me ALMOST 4 YEARS TO OPEN UP AND EVEN THEN I DID NOT FULLY EXPRESS MYSELF I have suffered for over 3 years because nobody noticed because nobody noticed I had to almost attempt suicide in 6th grade to let people know something was wrong even then I lied I lied to as I thought protect myself from expressing a "vulnerability" that can be exploited There will be no happy ending for me only suffering until I pass on into the void that is death

To those struggling with their physical and/or mental health, know that even if no one is supportive or helpful, there is someone in the world who supports your journey, even if they are a total stranger, like myself. I'm still in a battle with my inner thoughts and past, but I don't let that get a hold of me like a prisoner. Everyone goes through some tough battles and gets out of them! This video very well describes me. I have been not feeling myself for many years now. I moved more than once when I was younger, dealing with pets passing away, one night seeing my dad be taken away by cops when younger, the tornadoes and severe weather in Wisconsin, my parents becoming divorced a few months before I turned 16, my mom moving to Missouri soon, bad things happening in my life, not being able to see my friends everyday, life at home, being bullied in school, people not liking me for who I am, and lastly not able to see my boyfriend who lives in New Jersey (but we text and face time when possible). Thank you for making these videos for us to understand what goes on in the world around us! Keep up the wonderful work, thanks Psych2Go!

I can relate to this topic of the video. Story: I was like 2nd-4th grade and all those years (4 yrs.) I had horrible communication with other people, I was like "not" me and also my slight anger issues and depression and trauma add up into the pot and got mixed up and as a result, I became "sassy" or like a person who is: bossy, very emotional, always shouting and other negative flaws that a person would have in life, and during that 4 yrs. people started to like be distant to me all the time, except my family ofc. Now the second I watched this video of urs, its like I am recalling my old memories and compare them to present me, and now I can tell how many mistakes of communication and other stuff I did back in the old times. Also your videos helped me a lot lately thank you for that!!

i was diagnosed with depression in 6th or 7th grade but looking back I was depressed as young as 8-9 years old. At that time I didn't have a phone and I relied heavily on books. During school I would constantly be reading. In class, at recess, at lunch... Everywhere. I now realize that it was escapism. Because of this I basically didn't have friends. Sure I had people i was friendly with but didn't spend nearly enough time with anyone. My grades tanked because i simply didn't care. I was numb. It disturbs me that no one said anything to my parents. I was basically getting straight Ds and Fs. In fifth grade they punished you for not doing hw by making you do indoor recess. Guess who was in nearly every day just reading? Me. It makes me sad to think about as I didn't realize how depressed I was until recently. I don't know of I actually felt sad all the time but I was definitely emotionless.

I really relate to this video. I used to be so social and hang out with my family all the time now I just lay in bed on my devices because when I’m not on my phone I don’t have my brain occupied properly then I start thinking of the things that make me feel upset/depressed(like the thing I’m thinking about most right now is the fact I’m moving to a whole new continent, I currently live in Africa but am going to North America) and I just can’t handle leaving anyone(including my horse who was my closest buddy) I’m close to right now bc they are one of the only reasons I’m not dead today. I’ve asked my mother for professional help to deal with these feelings and because I struggle to eat anymore without feeling like I’m gonna get overweight(even though I’m underweight at the moment) but my mother always shrugs it off and says it’s a normal thing cuz I’m a teenager. I usually just deal with my bad thoughts by myself but I don’t think I can anymore. Anyway thanks for reading to my long ass vent

I’m an adult now and have asd (autism spectrum disorder). I have a history with not being the best communicator mainly because of that. I made some friends in my special Ed class. Some stayed in my life, some I lost touch with. When I turned 12 everything changed. Yeah because I have speech delays I’ve had trouble communicating to begin with but then I stopped wanting to hang out with friends for a while. This was a result of being bullied by some of my peers. For context in elementary school whenever I tried to befriend people out of my class like on the bus or after school they would reject me. It didn’t bother me as much as it did when I got to middle school and people would act like my friend and I wouldn’t realize they were making fun of me. As a result I spent a majority of time playing video games as oppose to making actual friends, eating junk food, feeling like there’s a storm cloud over my head. That mostly changed in Highschool when I started making friends, and eating healthier and exercising. Things have mostly gotten better. I have friends but am not in touch as often as I should be mostly cause I’m busy and when I’m not busy I just like to shut my brain off. I still get a feeling of constantly feeling stuck in a loop, and ever since I was in middle school I developed a habit of biting my lip under stress or simply in deep thought. I’ve been seeing a therapist since 7th grade. And I’ve gotten better also cause of cbd gummies have made my brain feel as normal as it did when I was in 5th grade. Highly recommend to anyone.

When I was about eight or nine, I started having anxiety, i bottled up my emotions and never told anyone about it until I kept having breakdowns, in I had all of these symtoms amd still do. I kept distancing myself from people, using escapeism as a way to cope, i would make excuses. I felt forced to do well in school, landong myself a lot of As and barely any Bs and I did what I was told. I would ve guilty for any praise I got. I felt alone. I felt sad. I suddenly lost motivation in everything i loved to do. I loved playing games, watching tv, drawing, taking the dogs out, I lost interest in everything. I stopped eating well, I only wanted to eat sugar to make me happy, it never helped. My parents got really worried and brought be to a counselor, she helped me find things to calm down and now I am kinda happier

@@kvee2012 You need time to pass, wounds will stay as scars but it healed better then when the wound was open. I took my time and added small steps. Going to therapy and psychiatry (sometimes with seclution) helped me through the rough parts. I stabelized myself through a routine and kept that routine though the years. I´ve added stuff and removed them as time came by. I learned to love the smaller things (nature, photography, art, music...) and relied heavely on them. Next came social life and I´ve builed it up by going to a bar and having some friends over. It is heavy and yes it will drain in the beginning. But you´ve done it, you´ve done the draining evening and made a victory by even getting out of bed a´d be there for them. Don´t be harsh a´d set some boundaries for yourself. Instead of saying 'no' to some situations is hard, try saying 'not now' or 'maybe later'. As time goes by you´ll learn your own coping mechanisms, how to release the bad and how to heal. -i hope this helped 🍀

I need to vent about something that absolutely infuriates me: I hate it when a child or teenager will go online and talk about how their suffering through something, and then adults will mock them and tell them they’re faking it just because they’re young. I’ve even seen people trauma dump on others to try and prove that they’re problems “don’t matter as much” and they’re just “faking it for attention”. Like, you have no idea what these kids went through. They could have lost a loved-one, have been abused or generally just feeling devastated. By just passing off someone’s sadness simply because their young, even if they were faking it for attention, is an awful thing to do and I despise how it’s normalised on the internet.

I've been is a state where I've been unable to enjoy anything, and whenever I try it makes me just feel bored. it feels like the only things I can feel is boredom, tiredness, sadness, and anger. I'm not super irritable, but I still live with my family and they are the most unbearable people to live with. I also sometimes have a very hard time not harming the people around me. I've never had suicidal thoughts, but I have thoughts of harming others regularly. I know this should concern me, but I barely am. The only things I can remember feeling in the past month is hatred towards my family and interacting with them, a sadness that I put myself into to try to feel something (that sounds really dumb but that's the only reason I can rack by brain for) and I couldn't even make myself cry. my family is always getting on to me about how I'm grumpy all the time, how I'm a hypochondriac, and how I act like I hate them.

One day she finally took me seriously and booked me up for counseling. It didn't help much, but it did put a little bit of motivation in me. I was lonely and I finally started trying to socialize. I was always shy and used to being rejected. But I pushed that aside because I was in a new school where everyone was nice.
