Obviously, it's not going to be the same for everyone. Honestly, the best thing that you can do is be a good friend. Be their friend and be there for them because you want to, and not because you want them to develop feelings for you. Be supportive of them and show them that you care. Feelings might also not develop on their end, and that's okay. It should bring you joy just to see them happy. Being a good friend is your best chance, but also you get to have a meaningful friendship, which can be just as wonderful, even if they don't develop romantic feelings. (And in case anyone was curious, he had actually given up on me ever falling in love with him by the point that I did, so it took him by surprise when it happened.)
