Absolutely amazing video. One of Stoicism’s main misconceptions is that it may seem cold-hearted or unemotional, it clearly is not. Your videos are great to help spread this message. Nassim Taleb puts it nicely, it is “the domestication of your emotions, not the elimination of your emotions.”

It is always our _reaction_ to things that disturb our inner peace - the Buddha found that to be one of the key problems of the human condition too!
@SoferiaNebruin
@SoferiaNebruin 3 года назад
Does that include physical reaction, such as bleeding and feeling pain when we get hurt?
@TheDhammaHub
@TheDhammaHub 3 года назад
@@SoferiaNebruin Well, we will still feel the pain from it and it affects us physically, but, but the disturbed inner peace results from a mental reaction to the pain. The "disliking" of it so to speak. By not reacting mentally, there is pain, but no suffering!
@SoferiaNebruin
@SoferiaNebruin 3 года назад
@@TheDhammaHub Yikes....that feels like some of that cognitive dissonance I mentioned in my other comment. I do think we can mentally block pain during traumatic events, but it still gets stored in the subconscious mind and can affect us even without our knowledge.....some of the ancient wisdom knowledges stress the importance of clearing out the "subconscious barns." I would think that means being conscious of the pain and suffering in order to release it......I think this is a very complex topic actually. I don't claim to have the answers and am just exploring ideas. Thank you for your reply!

@@SoferiaNebruin I dont know about buddhist thought, but with the stoics your physical body is outside of your control. Your pain is something that makes living harder. I've been a practicing Stoic for a few years now, starting with my reading of Irvine's "A Guide to the Good Life." It has become increasingly difficult as the disintegration of the American empire seems to have accelerated, and "the lunatics have taken over the mad house (errr, ahhh, the mental facility)." So I am happy to view your videos that remind me of the Stoic virtues of Wisdom, Justice, Courage, and Moderation. But it is still difficult not to get angry at Fools, the Unjust, Cowards, and the Immoderate when confronted by them almost daily--particularly when they are working against the Common Good. Thank you, and cheers from Wisconsin.

I love stoicism but it stops short of a relationship with A personal God. Jesus is the epitome’ of it all of this-plus His dependence on a Loving God who cares about each person. I think God answers prayer, and the anger, bitterness & pain ease, ee can forgive out enemies knowing the same seed of ugliness exists in every human being snd by Gods grace we do not behave as the worst of other human beings… even can become masters of overwhelming emotions, when we seek & ask for help. Just my opinion. Blessings~

Sometimes I feel too much progressivism creates too much uncertainty which in turn causes too much stress. Given that society changes so quickly now the lack of continuity is a major stressor on humanities overall mental health. Coupled with the ability to see all the uncertainty in the world all at once via the internet we are experiencing something never before experienced by human beings and certainly not something that’s “in accordance with nature”

Genuine question: How does this fit into the lives of people whose lives are genuinely being undermined and abused? I guess I’m coming from the standpoint of not wanting to lose my shit but also wanting to improve this world for the next generation to come. It’s hard for me to balance thinking we really don’t matter but wanting peoples’ lives to matter for themselves for the betterment of everyone. Does that even make sense?
@YungDification

there will be anecdotes and exceptions, but i think it becomes a matter of personal responsibility in wanting your livelihood to be better, we use whatever tools we have at our disposal to make that happen, but they are all in essence concepts, even under extreme duress, immediate action that helps the situation would be preferable over endless rumination, (again there are exceptions - for example kidnapping and torture), the point of stoicism now becomes, how do you experience 'your experiences'? it is not less important the ends', as it is experiencing the means.

That will exist forever and as there is only one consciousness that wisdom is within us all. It’s within every living thing for we are all one. We all come from and will return to the same place. This is a very useful summary of important principles to lead a peaceful and happy life! I guess I am already kind of a stoic person 😉 because I take life as it comes without worrying too much. The best attitude is that of a child who while peacefully playing lives totally in the presence. If you always worry about the future and are afraid of becoming old, then you will automatically become old much faster. I rarely watch TV, because the daily news about terrible happenings all over the world only make us worry too much and there’s nothing we can do about it anyway. I think life was much easier a century before us, when people had no TV and no Internet. It is a natural fact that life is limited and I’m not afraid about death. It is our thoughts which make us unhappy, not what is happening in real. What I found interesting in this lecture is the statement that our mind is capable of turning fantasy into reality. This can be a gift, but also end in a nightmare. The best remedy is to always observe our thoughts and stay focused on the present. Then we can avoid ending up in a carousel of thoughts which make us sleepless and from which it is difficult to escape.

Fantastic! Stoicism is so valuable and something I'm routinely incorporating as part of my life (I actually released a few videos on the topic myself of late)

Not every stoic practiced what they preach. Even though they have a lot of wisdom and principles, but to actually put it in practice is a completely different story. It requires exceptional determination that only a few are able to.

Good video! And I listen for the comforting music as well as the philosophy!

This seems similar to buddhism. Many things Alan Watts says resonate deeply with this video.

Thank you so much! I was feeling a deep anxiety because I have to finish my thesis, in philosophy by the way, and I just stopped. The fear of failure and many other (imaginary) possibilities had me paralized. Now, I feel like it's simply another event on my life. Important, but no definitive of who I am.

The present moment is what we nee to embrace. No matter how though it might be today, patience and stay virtue along the process is our super power during the uncertainty. I know, It is easier said than done, but we think it's hard, it will never get easier, because all start with our mindset. Stay safe and and courageous.

There's a guy at work who continuously destroys my inner peace. He will not respond to my emails or when I ask him to do something he continues to tell me he's going to do it. When I talk to him about my emails, he tells me he didn't get it. I'm the IT guy and can see he's getting my emails and reading then. If I ask him to do something regarding the quality management system (I'm also the quality manager) he tells me again and again he'll get on it but never does. But, when ever he asks me to do something, I get it done because I know he needs it and for that reason it bugs the crap out of me. I'm considering not doing the things he asks me to do. I just can't trust that the guy will do anything.

Similar situation, gets me to work too hard. Think I will just start to become more relaxed and watch things fall apart to see what happens ✔️😂🍻
