That has happened to me before in Japan a bunch of times. This one time, I was singing Karaoke and some guy came up and started singing with me. We were drinking and talking the whole night. Everybody kept taking our pictures the whole night. Somehow a bunch of people who came, gave me the pictures that they took. Then like six months later some, friends were over at my house and looking at the photos on the table and they started shouting! How do you know him! It was hilarious! That guy was the lead singer for some huge popular Japanese band!

My family moved from Central Wisconsin to Switzerland a year and a half ago... I'm not a badly dressed guy, but man oh man did my wardrobe need updating! 🤣 We ended up in Provence France over the summer and I loved all the linen shirts and pants to help dress for the heat. Bought a several items. Wore them on our trip back to the US and got a lot of compliments. I have really enjoyed picking up shoes, sweaters, shirts etc from different locations that we have traveled to. Great reminders of where we have been and classicly styled to wear for ages.

My experience with cultural appropriation is that most of the cultures to whom a piece of clothing might belong don't actually care what you wear as long as you're being respectful. I really think the idea of cultural appropriation is yet another manufactured concern created by a certain side of the political aisle.
@EJ_Red

This is true. I remember years ago a little girl showed pictures of her Japanese-style tea party cause she wanted to try it but got blasted by the "certain side," but a good amount of Japanese people came to her defense and said they were happy that someone was interested to partake in their culture.

In Eastern Europe, it can actually happen if it has some historical background you wouldn't know about. CCCP hoodies may simply look cool in America (some of them actually have a good design), but CCCP means the Soviet Union, and if you wear it in Czech Republic, you might run into some trouble due to a huge massacre Soviets did there in 1968. We Hungarians do have a "1918 Trianon" memorial T-shirt design (our biggest national trauma), and here it's not welcome on foreigners who don't know its meaning, and in neighboring countries, who benefitted from that event, it's a huge offense.

Tartan kilts are tied to clans. It's not the kilt that has significance it's the tartan because it has familial connection. There are neutral tartans (such as Flower of Scotland) which are universal. Having said that I wouldn't mind if someone wore my clan tartan because they appreciated the colour.

Not too long ago, I discovered that there is a tartan for Galicia, the northern region of Spain, and as a Galician Spanish, it was nice to see that. I found it quite interesting, and it is a good design, but, to be honest, I do like the tartans of some clans. They have some flare to it.

I really like this video and the point at the end. When I've traveled, I bought local clothing. It looks good (even for a shorter guy) and I'll wear them for casual events. And as for me, I'm American of Filipino decent so if I saw someone rocking a barong tagalog, I'd be happy to see that. I also appreciate the point of not wearing something that's earned. My gf is currently part of a dance group that specialized in ancient folk dance. They have to talk with the indigenous people they learned it from, and get permission to do the dance and wear the items. Excellent video as always Antonio! Thank you for these.

One of my best friends just got married and his wife is from the Philippines. For the wedding he wore a barong, and so did all the groomsmen, which I was one of. I still have the barong and I love it. It's too cold in my area to wear it right now, but I definitely plan to wear it again someday, especially if I decide to visit the Philippines.

@RealMenRealStyle good morning ☕️ your videos have really helped me amp up my wardrobe, and the other day, I saw a man obviously older than me it might have been his day off or any other circumstances but he was literally wearing teenager clothing and not to judge but it just looks hilarious on him meanwhile his trying to flirt with the cashier girl (between 18 to 23) it was bad behavior going on up there. A man should act like a man and not assume that his in his teen also dresses the part and is well. But my point is, dressing sharp enough and acting your age can get you long mileage of respect and dignity. BTW would you ever make a video of goth winklespicker shoes? lol 😆 there are stylists if you dress the part, and there is a whole other department in there. Also, they do and don't in there. Unless it is not your thing. Maybe a Halloween episode 🤔

I love guayaberas. They are the best for warm sultry weather like you would get in the Caribean or Mediterrenean in the summer. And the colours! It's the best mix between the formality of a dress-shirt, the simplicity of a t-shirt and the colours just make you stand out. I got like 5 of them.

Wearing a kilt, not a problem. Especially if you pay the going rate for a properly woven one. They are expensive compared to the high street and internet knock offs but you are supporting a traditional craft whose weavers need the income. However, wearing a clan tartan when you don’t belong to that clan is a problem. Get advice from the kilt shop about what tartan you can wear that isn’t going to offend a clan member. There are plenty of modern tartans that aren’t associated with a traditional Scottish clan.

Serious Catholic here, I agree with you. The Rosary is actually a tool for counting prayers and was not intended for use as a necklace. It’s not a talisman or good-luck charm, or a cultural statement. It would be considered tone-deaf at best to wear a Muslim-style Burka or a Sikh dagger if you don’t share those beliefs. You are welcome to buy and own them but be respectful and do your research on its history and meaning!
@elgringolobo97

I'm also Catholic and I see some (mostly Mexican) Catholics wear a Rosary around their necks. What are your thoughts on this? I myself have a Rosary that has a clip on it so that you can wear it as a necklace. Some priests I've talked to think it's OK to do so as long as you actually practice the faith.

Thanks for this video. I was just thinking about cultural appropriation as you were talking about West African outfits, and your next subject was appropriation. I am, of course, a social justice warrior, so you don't likely care about what I say. But my general approach is that I don't buy clothes from another culture unless I'm invited to wear them. I just got back from Indonesia, where my local colleagues suggested that I buy a batik shirt to wear as formal wear when I'm back in the country. As an anime fan (which you mentioned), I don't wear kimono, but do wear Japanese inspired items when working as a volunteer at an anime convention. Honours and religious gear you are absolutely right about. You're also very right in your first point about taking inspiration from style icons around the world, particularly if you are going to be traveling to that area. Also I agree with you mostly on traveling light, although I take a minimum of 2 pairs of shoes so I can rest them between wearings :). I'm usually with checked luggage because I do need suits and sports coats, as well as clothes for campaigns, so it's hard to do carry on for 1-2 week business trips. And Carl Friedrik is a great looking company- I'll likely be picking up a briefcase from them this year. Thanks for highlighting their pieces!

Okay... In regards to kilts??.... Go for it. I'm a proud American of Scottish, French and Cherokee ancestry, and a State Commissioner (North Carolina) for the Clan Scott Society USA. When attending Highland events or games I get at least one person asking if they're 'allowed' to wear it. I tell them that while there are (as in any culture) 'gate keepers', there is no such thing as 'Tartan Police' or 'Tartan Jail'... We're just happy to have someone like it as much as WE do.... Oh and when I'm over in God's Country (Scotland) I sport one everywhere. And yes, people (mostly other tourist) DO come up and ask for directions occasionally 😉 ...They are always surprised when I answer back and they hear the grits coming out of my mouth 😁
