the word slav in slavic languages is "slovan" from the word "slovo" which literary means "a word" aka slované/slovani - people of the word, word for glory is "sláva" another reason why slavs are people of the word is that the slavic language name for germans is "němci", from the adjective "němý" which means mute, basicaly tribes of people who don't speak (either meant as they don't speak slavic or the just don't comunicate)
Waldemar is derivative of Vladimir....yes , slavic version is older..first Waldemar was danish king in 12 th century....his mom, who was kievan princess named him after her grandfather Vladimir Monomachos
Iv listend thru 3 times ;) my husband's really old uncle, told me his 'people' were KIPCHAK. Iv been digging into maps and ur kind of educational shows. Also he mentioned they were 'mountain' people. Another documentary on the Mongols, had them winning many many battles against the the Mongols.
Lactose is a sugar that many people (especially Asians) cannot digest. When you ferment sugars they become alcohols. When lactose is fermented it becomes alcohol which Asians are particularly good at digesting.
@@AnonyMous-gt8vq the "Asian Flush". Known a few NE Asians, all of them would get incredibly red faced when drinking. Has to do with how the body processes alcohol, can't remember the specifics off hand though.
Off hand, there’s a gene for an alternative process of breaking down alcohol that Asians lack, it kicks in if there is a lot of alcohol present. It is why you can be tipsy after 2 drinks but still fine after 5. Most common in Europeans and North Africans.
i really wish two of you would just do your own separate lectures because the interrupting is 99 times out of 100 counterproductive and maddening. maybe even just each speaker in sections one after another.
Of note AM. I do wish one day you would also do some kind of Stream, perhaps as a kind of one off stream, on possible Finnish or Finno-Ugric people's history, if you ever touch on Scandinavia as well. But that, I suppose is merely a wish from a small Finnish History fan. And I am very much aware how hard it is to find out about us, considering how Sweden did a number on our history and past.
As a hungarian it would be cool if they made a Finn-Ugric based stream series about the lesser know eastern/north europian peoples. God bless and love from Hungary!
31:45 You will find that it is not that universal as in Finnish Russia is Venäjä where inhabit the venäläiset, whereas the word ryssä is comonly withheld for derogatory (still most) references to these peoole.
This seems like an excellent production in many ways but honestly the speaker's gravelly voice was so distracting I could not listen to it. Maybe some sort of acoustic damper or something wpuld help.
On the "slave-slav" topic; I know you gents have said you put it to bed, but it sounds like you have it backwards. The theory is that slave comes from slav, but I think you're debunking slav coming from slave.
"Slave" _does_ come from "Slav", quite demonstrably so, but not the other way around. The origins of _slav_ are likely rooted in a number of Proto Slavic words (e.g. "slava" = glory; or, another term - that has slipped my mind - which indicates "those who speak")
Nope. Sclavi is a Latin word for 'slave' and comes from 'clavi' (key or locked… understandably why). Completely different origin. Slava = Glory Slovo = speach (or speaking = slovia) - they were people who did not write (sort of "illiterate") but representative of one of the oldest languages called Glos or Golos (which actually means 'Voice'). Countries in Eurone who speak dialects of that language: Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Chechia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Hertsegovina, Bulgaria (on Danube river), Macedonia (North), Chernogoria (so called Montenegro). Romania and Moldova used to speak it 120+ years ago in combination to their "broken" (unnatural) Latin (so called "romanian").
I read in Wikipedia that RUS mean "roor" to paddle or row...(Makes think of Viking Explorers..) I was told by a being who loves Nordic people that 1> ODIN put his people near Stockholm, Sweden. 2> LOKI, near Riga, Latvia (By LOKI is the real one that is older than Odin) or when I look at it.. R - US (Like some evil self-center being saying it is all of us when it is not..... RR anger at US.... I love the Primordial Deity KAOS... or ''O" THE SOURCE OF ALL.... Alferic (Elvish) OLAN is the Deity of Love and LIGHT.... But for most if you accept THE LORD then you have EVERLASTING LIFE, just strive to BE GOOD day to day.... The is a Devil named Mephistopheles that love the RUS because he loved how the Russians fought in WW1.....
Khazar Khagan Joseph converted to Judaism, as did eventually many of the Khazar elites. The Cavalry were Moslem. The Slavic farmers and craftsmen stayed traditional Indo European religion (called "pagan" by Islamic ambassadors). Your'e trade-route map has many errors. No one has ever rowed up the Oder and portaged over to the Morava/Danube (your eastern most line). Also, the Vistula line, should follow the Bug tributary with portage to the Dniester, which you don't show. Also, by "Sweden", you actually mean Gotland Island, which was independent until 1645. Your map should show Gotland Island like a wheel with many spokes radiating from its central role (more Islamic silver coins found there then anywhere else, by far) as a transshipment location. The Danube is not a Varangian trade route. Sviatoslav only ascended it a short distance. It's unlikely that Rurik even existed. There is a Hroraker from Denmark, who was a mercenary, who may have been "hired" to attack other pirates who were raiding Ladoga Slavs. But the "Rurik" Dynasty as you describe it is a much, much later invention by chroniclers clutching to link together disparate stories into some fictional line of history. Oleg and Igor are unrelated, seperate era warlords made to seem related by later chroniclers. The "invitation" is complete fabrication. The Rus were slavers, not beaver trappers. Nobody invites slavers to rule over them. Askold and Dyr probably ascended from Latvia or Lithuania to Kiev, where the Polanians had their tribal settlement and fort. The Polanians gave the Khazars swords to be their hired cavalry/defense, but they were too far away to be effective. Therefore, Kiev appealed to closer mercenaries to be their army (Askold and Dyr). Oleg killed Askold and Dyr, by some trickery (non-good faith trade negotiation/assassination) but he then is defeated too raiding near Constantinople and taken prisoner. The Byzantines release him and his group to attack the Khazars, who kill him and his men. This leaves Kiev shopping around for a new mercenary army. This is when Svenald and Igor enter the picture. Svenald had gotten rich in Byzantine service, so he had a well equipped entourage and had travelled the area. Igor however got himself killed trying to rob his neighbors, leaving Svenald with no client. So he props up Olga. Stories are made up about her brutality, because the Slavs won't be ruled by a woman, so the Chroniclers make her seem ruthless. How can she be ruthless with no army, no income, no powerful family to back her up? That just doesn't happen. Svenald ran what mercenaries as he could get. Kiev's fortunes collapsed. She tried to marry herself into the German elite, but they rejected her. She tried to marry in Byzantine nobility, but couldn't pull it off. She probably shopped her wares to the Magyars and Poles and Czechs too, but nobody wanted her. She had nothing to offer. She offered to convert to Christianity in hopes of attracting a wealthy connected husband, but even that didn't pay off. She was broke. When Sviatoslav comes of age, he has to leave Kiev to go raiding, just to get gear. He doesn't even own his own tent, and has to sleep outside on the ground. He becomes a professional bandit. This is a history of thieves and bandits and murderers, who later-day people (monks) try to polish-up their image retrospectively. Real record-keeping (basic literacy) doesn't begin until Vladimir. And no that name is not derived from Waldemar, it is the other way around.
Not really true only because in modern time today about thieves and bandits and terrorists who are ruling Rus are khazars who took Judaism and came to Slavs territory around 7 century. Where was everything begun☠️‼️‼️‼️
Nope. Muscovy is the tribe\city state. Rus in all so called Slavic languages means - blond haired. They have been blond haired, thus RUS, for centuries and millennia back. Rus is and always have been related to the Russians. Moscovia was the main city\state of russians.
@@PASHKULI you are f stupid, literally Kyiv was built 800 years before moscow, there is no link to moscovia and modern day parasha which name was stolen by peter I and means Rus in grec, you cant have a claim to a culture and history by stoling a name.
32:00 Actually in Soviet Russia the main theory was about western (Swedish) origin of the term “Russia”. (As it is now) 🤷♂️ The theory of Slavic origin of the word “Rus” is very popular in Ukraine today.
i don't understand why you insist on calling Volodymyr Vladimir. It is such common knowledge his name was and is Volodymyr that it leaves one wondering who the heck you're talking about.
Go on to Wikipedia - the most "common knowledge" source - Vladimir comes up first. Type Vladimir the name into Wikipedia - Vladimir the Great is the first result. No layperson in the west used names like Volodymyr and Kyiv until 2022.
@@catnap387 Why should anyone give you a reasoned answer when you spouted nothing but lies? The only brain-dead talking point you are capable of spouting with your chicken brain is that Kiev came before Moscow. And Novgorod came before Kiev. What's your point?
Half of Europe were ruled by Charlemagne but that doesn't make them all the same forever and develop into a single people. They were ruled by different princes with Kyiv being the principle princedom. @@benjaminchooby6760
