Thank you so much! I am pregnant, and I want to speak in English with my son, even though it's not my native language (and that I really need to improve), your video helped me a lot to boost my confidence at thinking that it's possible to raise my child bilingual.

I love your videos. So informative. It’s my second time listening to this video (because I watched all of them already) and I’m learning things I missed the first time.

Aw, this comment made my day! Thank you so much for watching! I hope to have more informative videos like this one up soon. It's so nice to know that someone is getting value from these. In the mean time, if you ever have any questions I can answer or offer an opinion on, please let me know! Just write a comment or email me 😀.

I m super impressed by how your son answers you. And btw his French accent is simply amazing 🤩 My son is older and spoke very late (3yo) I was so happy to eventually hear him speak that I did not make him repeat everything in the minority language at first. Now I tell him things like I don’t understand. “look I have my English ears on” I don’t understand French. Even though he complains I do understands, he repeats more and more and has started speaking spontaneously to me in English (our minority language) Really congratulations on your work with your son. It s both amazing and inspiring Thanks for sharing

Thank you so much for watching and for your encouragement! It's really nice to hear that you believe my son's accent is amazing--I'd be happy for acceptable or understandable! I understand why in your situation you might not be so adamant about the minority language at first, but I'm glad to hear that bit by bit, your son is seeing English as "your language" that you can share together. I'll have to remember your comment for the future--"I have my French ears on" :). Thanks again!

I like that expression another mom passed it on to me. I thought that was really cute. I would not il have thought about it myself. And to come back to your son his prononciation is really good I promise !!! We’ ll get there 🤞🤞🤞

What I love about this is that besides teaching and practicing a second language with your kid, this is quality time and connection! Your kid is receiving quality attention and interacting with you WHILE learning. I love this.

Actually, I am American! I can't claim that I am as native-like in French, my second language. I hope that doesn't change your opinion on how valuable this channel is. Thank you for watching and subscribing! 🙂

What do you recommend to single parents in terms of language use. How would you mix in the minority langauge when it's the same parent using both languages?

Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! It's wonderful that you are considering introducing more than one language to your child. If you're proficient in both languages, I'd recommend the time and place method. That will help your child better distinguish between the two languages (allowing them to acquire the languages more quickly) and also give you some separation between the two languages which will help you child know what language to speak/answer in. Even if you are less proficient in one of the languages, you can use this just to slowly introduce books and songs THROUGH the first minority language, rather than using it as a language of interaction. This approach is great for starting small as your build up to more and more exposure. It also will help you quantify you know how much exposure your child is getting to each language (in case you want to try to even out time spent interacting in both languages). However, some people find this to be rigid and prefer a more relaxed approach. I'd definitely choose one language to emphasize in the beginning if you haven't started yet, then once that language is pretty established as your go-to language (if you choose OPOL for that one), you could introduce the second language using time and place. I used the time and place method to introduce Spanish (in which is am much less proficient than in French) until I could pass it off to someone else (an au pair and Spanish preschool). I used breakfast time as our Spanish time teaching it THROUGH French and then I also used any time we spent when my youngest was napping (usually spent playing trains) to introduce some more Spanish. It would be best if you could find another source of support for one of the languages if possible at some point so that it does not take away too much from your other minority language. It's not impossible to help them acquire both of course but it depends on how much time you have to spend with your child and what other languages are being spoken to him or her and how often (for example, if your child is in school or daycare). I hope this helps!

Do you recommend translating the new target language as you read through the books or soley reading them in the new language? This would be to a toddler who has very little prior exposure to the new language.
